Nugent's Cavaliers and Pioneers pp 180 and 181 lists Thomas MORELAND as an owner of 100 acres on the Charles River Co., 5 Mar 1648. " In Chiskyake, butting upon Capt. WESTS Cr., on N. side with land of William SAYOR and on S. side with the master branch of Capt. WESTS Cr. The sd. land being granted to Elizabeth BAYLY in her right and her husbands as 2 of the first adventures to seat upon Charles River and by the sd. BAYLY assigned to Ellis BROWN and by sd. BROWN assigned unto William REYNOLDS and by REYNOLDS to Robert CAGER, and by sd. CAGER to sd. MORLAND." A map in this volume shows the location of Thomas MORELAND's property. Adventuers of Purse and Person, VA; 1607-1624/5; Musters of the Inhabitants of VA includes a mention of Thomas MORELAND on page 64 under a "muster of the inhabitants of Elizabeth Cittie beyond the Hampton River, being the Companyes land-servants-Thomas MORELAND age 19 in the Abigall 1621." He was on the Quick Rent Rolls for York County in 1704 for land held by Her Majesty in York County. He was on Jury Service 24 Feb 1687/8 in York County and again 10 Nov. 1690. He was appointed Surveyor of Highways for the Lower Precincts of Hampton Parish 24 Jan. 1689/90. An article appearing in the York County Historical Series E-2 (Dec. 1996) entitled "The Early Families of Grafton" may give the location of the MORELAND property in York County. Lewis MORELAND born ca. 1800, the youngest brother of Edward MORELAND gave a deed-in-trust against his property Sept. 6, 1836. The tract contained 400 acres and was bounded by Bell, Martin, heirs of Edward MORELAND, and Curtins. (York Deed Book 14 p 309.) When Robert Alexander MORELAND gave a deed to the Rev. George W. Trimyer for the place that later became the Methodist Church parsonage of Grafton Drive, he gave as one of the boundaries east by Lewis MORELAND's land. Her will was made 20 Aug 1720 and recorded 18 Sept 1721 by John MORELAND. She is mentioned as the widow of John MORELAND in the will of Francis MORELAND. Court Records p 456 contains the following-"Sally MORELAND, widow and relict of Wright MORELAND, deceased, Charley MORELAND, Dudley MORELAND, Major HANCOCKE and Mary his wife and Meshack HICKS and Elizabeth his wife which said Charles, Dudely, Mary and Elizabeth are children and distributees of Wright MORELAND plaintiffs against Thomas MORELAND, John MORELAND, Joel RYAN and Lucy, his wife, William, Sally, Nancy, Polly, Wright and John MORELAND infant children of William MORELAND, deceased and Sally MORELAND, widow and relict of said William MORELAND, deceased, and which said Thomas MORELAND, John MORELAND and Lucy RYAN are children and with the children of William MORELAND, deceased, who was the son of the said Wright are all distributees of the said Wright MORELAND, deceased. The defendants are not residents of the state of Virginia." William and Sarah MORELAND were administrators of the estate of Peter Ford in Burke Co NC which was just across the border from Carter Co TN 20 July 1(William Jr. also married a Sarah and she could have been the Sarah SIMPSON who married William MORELAND.) William served in the 9th Virginia Line in the Revolutionary War. The Centennial Edition of the DAR Index, part 2, page 2071, contains this information: Moreland, William b c 1761 Va., d abt 10-19-1812 Tennessee, married Sarah __________, Private, Virginia. William served Dec. 1776 to Jan. 1778. Another reference to Williams' war service in found in Virginia Soldiers of the American Revolution VI p 317, Virginia State Library and Archives, 1989, Richmond, Virginia. Moreland, William, Aud. Acct. XVIII, 681. He moved to the Washington District of North Carolina where he was appointed Constable in 1778. He was appointed to take the taxables for 1790 in the area above Iron Mountain. He was still there in 1796 when Tennessee became a state and Carter County was formed and was one of the original land owners and tax payers of Carter Co. The 1796 Tax Lists for Carter Co., TN record William owning 500 acres. A restraining order was issued against Sarah MORELAND in 1820 by Nicholas GRINDSTAFF. She remained a widow after William MORELAND died. William MORELAND died between 1799 when his youngest daughter was born and 1812 when his heirs inherited a portion of the estate of Wright Moreland in Goochland Co., VA. He also receives 8 acres lying in Carter Co., in the Washington District on the south side of the Watuga River including improvements formerly occupied by Charles MORELAND. This was proved in the Nov. Court 1813. Deed Book B pp 431/66. Deed Book C p. 291-292, 12 Nov 1817 shows Jacob BOLLINGER and Sarah, his wife, formerly Sarah MORELAND, one of the heirs of William MORELAND to Right MORELAND for $300, 90 acres, where Jacob BOLLINGER lives which Sarah inherited from William MORELAND deceased by agreement dated 19 Oct. 1816, proved in court Nov. 1817. Jacob served in the 3rd Regiment (JOHNSON's) East Tennessee Militia during the War of 1812. He is reported to have been at the Battle of Mobile. Jacob and his family moved to Randolph Co., ILL before arriving in Missouri in 1838. Jacob's will is in Polk County Wills and administrations 1837-1854 V A, page 53. He left everything to his wife "Sary." Sarah's will is dated 7 July 1855 V A, page 183. She left the majority of her estate to her son with whom she made her home and bequeathments to her other children. Jacob and Sarah are buried at Tillery Cemetery in Hickory Co., MO. Dudley was a Revolutionary war veteran and joined his brothers in Carter Co TN following the Revolution. Dudley applied for a 24 Sept 1832 based upon his Revolutionary War service (pension #R7360) and stated he entered the service under Col. Nathaniel MORRIS of Virginia and Capt. Samuel RICHARDSON under a draft in 1778 in Goochland Co., Va. for 6 months and that he was living in Goochland County about 30 years previously and moved to Carter Co., TN, then to Wayne Co, KT about 11 year previously. John MORELAND, administrator of the estate of Elizabeth MORELAND, deceased, stated in an affadavit that Elizabeth, his mother, died in Wayne Co., KT in March of 1846. William was a farmer owning forty acres each in sections 36 and 37 of Clay Twp. In a persion application his wife described him as having a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair. He died on 24 Sept 1837. It is assumed that he was enterred in a common grave on South Padre Island. His widow applied for and received a persion. His pension application #26509 gives his service. In the summer of 1781 he marched north toward Little York when CORNWALLIS surrendered. Served as a surgeon for both the Union and Confederate armies in and around Chattanooga. Charles and Susannah were both baptised at the St. James Northam Parish Church in Goochland Co. and married there by the Rev. William DOUGLAS. Both families came to Virginia about 1620. Charles' name appears on Deed Book 15 p 453 and on the Coochland County marriage register p 43. Charles was a Revolutionary War Veteran and joined his brothers in Carter Co TN following the war. He filed for a Revolutionary War Pension from Carter Co. 17 Sept 1832. In his application he mentioned that he served two terms under General Washington and General Lafayette and that he fought at the Battle of Yorktown. His will dated 29 May 1846 lists his son Wright as beneficiary. He was not listed on the 1850 census. Along the way the group was stricken with "camp fever" which killed several family members including Wright and Margaret.
