Arrendell Sisters
These are the granddaughters of John Arrendell, an early settler who arrived in Johnson County, TN in about 1785. Elva and Margaret are the daughters of Richard Arrendell and his wife Elizabeth Reece. Richard Arrendell and his descendants maintained the Arrendell surname, while the remainder of the family changed their name to Arnold between 1850-1870. Dicie is Laodicea Reece, the wife of Jarrett Arrendell. Elva Arrendell married George Washington Madron on 2 Aug 1846 in Watauga County, NC. Margaret Arendell married John Osborn on 18 Feb 1845 in Johnson County, TN. Dicie died on 22 May 1885, and so this picture was taken before then. There were very few cameras available in 1885, and most of them were Kodak String Set cameras which were loaded with a 100 exposure roll of film. When he last picture was taken, the camera was mailed to Rochester, NY where the film was processed, and the pictures and the camera with a new roll of film was mailed back to the owner. This makes this picture one of the earliest ones taken in Johnson County, TN.
