- Nolamae H. Cook, 73, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at her residence, surrounded by her family. Nolamae was born in Roan Mountain, Tenn., to the late Alvin and Orla Holtsclaw Hicks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Elva Vines and Eula Jean Hicks, and her brothers, Dewey Hicks and Elbert Hicks.
Nolamae had worked as a medical secretary and attended Open Door Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and loved to play piano for many churches, loved her family, spending time with her grandchildren, loved gardening and taught Sunday School.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 49 years, Jimmy Dale "J.D." Cook, of the home; one son, Dale Cook and wife Tonia of Roan Mountain; one daughter, Darla McKinney and husband Chris of Louisville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Gracie Cook, Dalton Cook, Randy McKinney and wife Jacqueline, and Dustin McKinney; one great-granddaughter, Aria; her sisters, Ruby Bennett and husband Martin of Hampton, Edna Thomas and husband Ed and Ruth Barrie and husband Rick, all of Elizabethton, and Carrie Reene of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and a special sister-in-law, Karen Parlier and husband Allen of Elizabethton.
A service to celebrate the life of Nolamae H. Cook will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, November 30, at the Open Door Baptist Church, Elk Park, N.C., with Rev. Reed Callahan and Rev. Richard Sheppard officiating. Music will be provided by the church congregation and Charlotte Smith. The family will receive friends at the church from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service, or at the residence at other times. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, December 1, at Pilgrim Baptist Church Cemetery in Elk Park, N.C. Active pallbearers will be Kenneth Thomas, Tip Brown, Freddie Holly, Ted Hardin, David Cook and Jamie Barrie. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Hicks, Steve Blair, Ray Blair, Charles Buchanan, Lewis Grindstaff and her grandsons. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Friday. The family would like to thank Mountain States Hospice, Dr. Kenneth Hopland, Dr. Israel Garcia, and the doctors and staff of Sycamore Shoals Hospital for the love and care shown to Nolamae during her illness.
