Lester C. "Tubby" Shell, age 83, 109 Bradshaw Woods, Erwin, died Friday, December 4, 2009, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Shell was a Unicoi County native and a resident of Erwin for most of his life.
He was a son of the late David Carson and Martha Ellen Miller Shell.
Mr. Shell retired in 1992 as a Captain from the Erwin Police Department after twenty-six years of service. He was formerly employed with Nuclear Fuel Services and the Unicoi County Sheriffs Department.
Mr. Shell was instrumental in the organization and development of the Erwin Emergency and Rescue Squad, and was a Charter Member.
He received an Associate Degree from Steed College.
Mr. Shell was a U.S. Army veteran serving three terms during World War II and the Korean War, attaining the rank of Sergeant.
He was a member of Clear Branch Baptist Church and the National Rifle Association.
Mr. Shell enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Shell, and one sister, Mary Slemons.
Mr. Shell is survived by, his wife of forty-six years, Elouise Guinn Shell; three brothers, Lawrence Shell and wife Alma and Bernie Shell, all of Unicoi and Floyd Shell and wife Sara, Erwin; two sisters, Gertrude Rice, Erwin and Ruth Buchanan, Bakersville, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews, including special nieces and nephews, Robbie Piercy, Teresa Piercy Honeycutt, Judy Slemons, Karen Walker, Tony Slemons and Randy Shell.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday, December 7, 2009, at 8:00 P.M. from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Bill Ponder and the Reverend Earl Ragland officiating. Special music will be provided by Queenie Wheeler, Alfred Dugger and Inez Chandler.
The graveside committal service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. in Evergreen Cemetery. Officers from the Erwin Police Department will serve as active pallbearers and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers. Family, ministers, pallbearers and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 A.M. Tuesday.
