    Mrs. Ora Glenna Oliver, 79, 982 Old Gray Station Road, Gray, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

    Mrs. Oliver was a native of Sullivan County but had lived most of her life in Washington County. She was a daughter of the late Daniel and Bertha Oliver Bowers and was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Paul Oliver, in 1994, four brothers and four sisters.

    Mrs. Oliver was a homemaker and a member of Midway Baptist Church.

    Survivors include two daughters, Janette Foxx Conley and Carolyn Gouge, both of Gray; a son, Robert Wayne Oliver, Johnson City; a brother, Howell Bowers, Chuckey; three granddaughters, Cindy Oliver Walker, Jana Gouge Wilson and Tammy Oliver Wilson; and a grandson, Jay P. Ms. Pierce loved working in flowers and was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church.

    She is survived by two sisters, Cynthia Ensor and her husband, Henry Wayne, Elizabethton; Gretchen Miller and her husband, Larry, Gray; two brothers, Lawrence Pierce and his wife, Gaye, Elizabethton; Aaron Pierce and his wife, Lynda, Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Anna Ruth Pierce, Elizabethton; special friends, Cleola Taylor, Ernest Lee Wilson, Dorothy Burrow, and Herbert and Kathy Street, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    The funeral service for Ms. Pierce will be conducted on Friday, November 18, 2011 at 7:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace with Rev. Bryan Smith officiating. Music will be under the direction of Sue Bowers, pianist and Dale Williams, soloist. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:30 to 7:00 PM Friday prior to the service and at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, Aaron and Lynda Pierce, 202 Sunrise Drive, at other times.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Raymond Pierce, Joe Pierce, Earl Pierce, and Jack Pierce; and three sisters, Vera, Ivory and Gretchen.

    Lawrence retired from Watauga Industries and from Watauga Forestry Services. He was a United States Army veteran and was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church.

    Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 62 years, Rada Gaye Bowers Pierce, of the home; his sons, Keith Pierce and Zaney Pierce, both of Elizabethton; his daughters, Debbie Wiseman and husband Mike, of Morganton, NC and Sandra Vanover, of Elizabethton; a grandson, Lucas Pierce, of Johnson City; a granddaughter, Jada Vanover, of Elizabethton; a sister, Cynthia Ensor, of Elizabethton; and a brother, Aaron Pierce, of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

    A service to honor the life of Mr. Lawrence Pierce will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Wednesday March 2, 2016 at Caldwell Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Roe, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the church choir.     ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Aaron Howard Pierce, age 77, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with the Lord and loved ones passed before him Friday, September 6, 2019 in the Holston Valley Medical Center.

    A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Joe H. and Creola Oliver Pierce. He was a 1960 graduate of Unaka High School where he was a standout football player. Aaron retired from Great Lakes Research Corporation. He also was employed by the State Highway Department and as custodian at Hunter First Baptist Church, Elizabethton for nearly five years. He attended Lynn Valley Baptist Church and was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church, Elizabethton. Aaron was active in Meals on Wheels and was a volunteer fireman for the Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed sports, especially football, fishing and spending time with his family especially around the holiday season.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by ten siblings. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Lynda Sue Tolley Pierce, of the home; his children, Tim and Penny Pierce, Mark and Sherry Pierce, Tammy and John Nanney, Debbie LeVeau and Doug Wilson all of Elizabethton; Todd and Lin Stevens, Gray and April and Richie Hooven, Kingsport; a sister, Cynthia Ensor and husband Henry, Elizabethton; sisters-in-law, Anna Ruth Pierce and Gaye Pierce; fourteen grandchildren and their spouses and ten great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends also survive.

    Mr. Bowers received his G.E.D. from Unaka High School. He was retired from the Chemical Division of
    North American Rayon Corporation after 49 years of service and was a member of Hunter United Methodist
    Church. He was an avid reader and an avid Lady Vols fan and Elizabethton Twins Baseball fan. He was active
    in the Democratic Party and was a member of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens.
    Survivors include a daughter, Lois Bowers Williams, Elizabethton; two sons and daughters-in-law,
    Ralph C. and Sandra Bowers, Lansing, Mich., and Larry E. and Sharon Bowers, Elizabethton; five grandsons,
    Michael Bowers, Mark Bowers, Todd Williams, Benjamin Bowers and Christopher Bowers; four great-grand-
    daughters; and four sisters, Novella Massengill, Bluff City, Margaret "Toots" Campbell, Mary Evelyn Bennett and Stella Mae Brewer, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
    Funeral services for Mr. Bowers will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Joe Manis and Rev. Estil Williams officiating.     Novella was a native of Carter County and was a daughter of the late Luther and Flaura Buckles Bowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy Bowers, Ola Bowers, Emmert Bowers and Darrell Bowers; and three sisters, Reva Angel, Margaret Campbell and Mary Evelyn Bennett.

    Mrs. Massengill was a homemaker and was a member of Bunker Hill Christian Church. She loved to grow flowers and cooking.

    Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Paul D. Massengill, of the home; a daughter, Karen M. Campbell, Bluff City; a son, Timothy P. Massengill, Bluff City; two granddaughters, Carrie Campbell, Los Angeles, CA, and Christina Campbell, Bluff City; one great granddaughter, Eliza Campbell, Bluff City; and one sister, Stella Brewer, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    A service to honor the life of Mrs. Novella Eliza Bowers Massengill will be conducted at 4:00 PM on Sunday, May 24, 2015 at Tetrick Funeral Home – Bluff City Chapel, with Mr. Patrick Mitchell, minister, officiating.     ELIZABETHTON — Mr. Eugene F. (Jack) Buckles, formerly of 159 Buckles Road, Elizabethton, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton.

    He was born on December 13, 1921, to the late Frank and Emma Buckles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Juanita G. Buckles; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pearl and Luther Buckles and Effie and Carmack Danner; two brothers, Clay Buckles and Claude Buckles. He was a native of Carter County, TN.

    Mr. Buckles was a life-long farmer in the Blue Springs Community of Carter County, he also served in the United States Army and saw combat in Europe during WWII. He was employed at North American Rayon Corporation for many years and served two terms on the Carter County Commission. He was a member of the Blue Springs Christian Church.

    Mr. Buckles was fond of bluegrass music, gospel music and old time fiddle tunes. One of his favorite songs was "What a Day That Will Be" with which he often sang along. He especially enjoyed the gospel music of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver.

    Mr. Buckles is survived by four children: Vivian Hammonds, Wayne L. Buckles, Barbara Jean Lotshaw, all of Elizabethton, and Debbie Dotson, of Watauga; two sons-in-law, Howard Hammonds and Mark Dotson; four grandchildren, Melanie Harkleroad and husband, Tim, of Bristol, Nathan Arnold and wife, Shelley, of Norman, OK, Frank Arnold and wife, Caryn, of Tulsa, OK, Dustin Buckles and wife, Jessica, Elizabethton; five great-grandchildren, Martin and Sarah Harkleroad, Bristol, Mason, Haley and Brett Arnold, Norman, OK; brothers and sisters-in-law, H.J. and Helen Buckles, Ivan Buckles, Earl and Helen Buckles, Elizabethton, Paul and Peggy Buckles, of Mt. Carmel, TN; sisters, Margaret Garland, of Casco, MI, Edith Buckles and Myrtle Pierce, Elizabethton, Brenda and Bill Taylor, of Johnson City; sisters-in-law, Georgia Buckles, of Bristol, and Myrtle Buckles, Elizabethton; and a special brother-in-law, Harold Grindstaff, of Goode, VA.     ELIZABETHTON — Mrs. Edith Grace Buckles, 87, formerly of 189 Rainbow Circle, Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2011.

    She was the daughter of the late Frank and Emma Buckles and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Buckles, in 1986; three brothers; and two sisters-in-law, Clay and Georgia Buckles, Claude Buckles, Eugene and Juanita Buckles; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Luther and Pearl Buckles, Carmack and Effie Danner; two brothers-in-law, Elwood Garland, Guerney Pierce; a sister-in-law, Ella Mae Buckles.

    Mrs. Buckles was a homemaker and a partner in the Floyd Buckles Sales Company. She was a devoted member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church. She loved her friends in the Willing Workers Sunday School Class there.

    She was a loving aunt who will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews.

    She is survived by four brothers, H.J. Buckles and his wife, Helen, Elizabethton, Ivan Buckles; Elizabethton, Earl Buckles and his wife, Helen, Elizabethton; Paul Buckles and his wife, Peggy, Mt. Carmel; three sisters, Margaret Garland, Casco, MI, Myrtle Pierce, Elizabethton, Brenda Taylor and her husband, Bill, Johnson City; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Buckles; her special friend and caregiver, Wilma Bowers; and her roommate and friend, Charlotte Walker. A host of nieces and nephews also survive.

    The funeral service for Mrs. Buckles will be conducted on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. William Lunsford, Rev. William Taylor and Dr. William Duncan officiating. Music will be under the direction of Tina Lunsford and Headed Home.

    The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1:00-2:00 PM Saturday prior to the service and at the home of a sister, Myrtle Pierce, 233 Berry Hill Road, Elizabethton, at other times.

    Interment will follow the funeral service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Gerald Buckles, Dean Buckles, Jimmy Buckles, Tommy Pierce, Randy Wilson, Eric Buckles, Jerry Weaver and Buddy Bowers. Honorary pallbearers will be all her friends and neighbors.

    H.J. Buckles, 87, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, August 15, 2016, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. H.J. was born in Carter County to the late Frank "F.T." Buckles and Emma Buckles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Edith Buckles, Pearl Buckles, Margaret Garland and Effie Danner; his first wife, Ella Mae Buckles; and five brothers, Clay Buckles, Gene Buckles, Claude Buckles, Earl Buckles and Ivan Buckles.
    H.J. had worked as both a bus driver and a farmer. He was a member of Willow Springs Baptist Church and attended Meadowview Baptist Church. H.J. loved gardening and will be missed by everyone that knew him.

    A service to honor and celebrate the life of H.J. Buckles will be conducted at 6 p.m. Friday, August 19, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Richard Jones and Rev. Dean Smith officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 6 p.m. Friday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 20, at Caldwell Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.     Mr. Buckles was employed for a number of years by the Carter County Sheriff Department. He was also a farmer. He was a member of the Carter County Cattleman Association.

    In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three sisters: Pearl Buckles, Effie Danner and Edith Buckles; and four brothers: Clay, Claude, Eugene and Earl Buckles.

    Mr. Buckles was retired from East Tennessee Chair Company and had served as a constable for the Carter County Sheriff's Department.

    ELIZABETHTON - Paul Pierce, age 88, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at Signature Health and Rehab in Elizabethton. Paul was born in Elizabethton to the late Martin Pierce, Sr and Shinola (Buckles) Pierce. In addition to his parents, Paul was also preceded in death by four brothers and sisters: Clarence Pierce, Reece Pierce, Callie Pierce and Aline Pierce.

    Paul loved to be around people- laughing and chatting with anyone that would pass the time with him. A proud United States Army veteran, Paul had owned and operated his own business- Paul’s Handle Shop. Paul had also worked at Western Auto in Elizabethton for 25 years, as a courier at Carter County Bank, at White’s Grocery, and at Barnes Boring Hardware. Paul loved working on tools and in any kind of wood products. He was a loyal and faithful member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church and had also attended Watauga Valley Church and had served as a trustee there. Paul was also a member of the cemetery association at Wilson Cemetery in Stoney Creek.

    Those left to cherish and remember Paul’s many wonderful memories include his wife of 62 wonderful years, Geraldine Pierce of the home and his daughter, Jennifer Harmon and son-in-law, Keith and his grandson, the apple of his eye, Colin Harmon; a brother, Martin Pierce, Jr. Several nieces, nephews, church family and extended family also survive.

    A service to celebrate and honor Paul’s life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 9, 2023 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton with Paul’s former pastor of Union Hill, Pastor Roger Hayley and Pastor Kenny Lethcoe officiating. Music will be under the direction of Dennis Laws of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Thursday.

    The graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Friday, February 10, 2023 in the Wilson Cemetery of the Stoney Creek Community. Active pallbearers will be Keith Harmon, Colin Harmon, Jerry Pierce, Randall Lewis, Dale Colbaugh and Bill Grindstaff.     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Mack and Jim Buckles; her sister, Ethel Smith; and her daughter, Shirley Dugger Williams.

    She was a member of the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church. Surviving family members are her son, Stephen Dugger (Ginger); her grandchildren, Ashley Dugger Estep (Nick) and Blake Dugger (Brandi); her five great grandchildren, Gracie Estep, Levi and Cooper Estep, Jackson Nidiffer, Ava Dugger; and several nieces and nephews.

    The visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2016, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with her home-going service beginning at 7 p.m.

    The family would like to thank Takoma Regional Hospital and the Life Care Center of Greeneville, Amedisys Hospice, her Sunday School Class at Caldwell Springs and several friends and family members who helped her through her last days.

    Born December 3, 1933 in Johnson City to the late Joseph & Armitta Bowers Hicks. She came to Elizabethton at an early age to live with her Uncle & Aunt: Albert & Grace Hicks. She was a 1952 graduate of Elizabethton High School. Betty was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she was active in the WMU serving as Director and she loved working in Vacation Bible School. She was a homemaker, loved to cook, sew, and go camping and spending winters in Florida. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years: Eddie M. Shirley who passed away January 16, 2018, by a granddaughter, Rachael Whaley, her sisters: Irene Greene and Ada Mae Byrd, her brother: Joe Hicks and a sister-in-law: Betty Jean Shirley.

    Survivors include her children: Debra Sanders & husband David, Johnson City, Eddie Martin Shirley II & wife Jane, Knoxville, Keith Shirley & wife Barbara, Kingsport and Diane Whaley & husband Mike, Gray.
