    Notes:

Glennie Ruth Young Googe, age 89, passed away peacefully at Johnson City Medical Center on October 14, 2019. Glennie was born on November 15, 1929 to Arthur and Minnie Slagle Young in Bakersville, NC.

In addition to her parents Glennie was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Googe in 1982. Her brother Owen Young, was buried in Portland, Oregon on his birthday at the age of 33. Her sister, Violet, passed away at the age of 9. Her sister, Liena Young Slagle passed away in 2006 at the age of 84.

Glennie graduated as valedictorian from Bowman High School in Bakersville, NC. Glennie dreamed of being a nurse from the time she was in 6th grade. At the age of 17 she entered Knoxville General Hospital School of Nursing, an affiliate of University of TN. When Glennie graduated from Knoxville General as a Registered Nurse she was immediately employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital at Mountain Home. This was the only employer Glennie ever had. In 1981 she retired from the V/A after 31 years in the Operating Room, the last 16 years were as Operating Room Supervisor. During this time, she went to ETSU at night and obtained a BS degree in Health & Nutrition and graduated cum laude.

Glennie enjoyed a full and meaningful 89 years, largely lived for others. When she and Frank built their home, they built it to serve others. She had a dedicated room as her hospital room. Her house was always open to anyone that needed a place to stay. She has kept missionaries, exchange students, evangelists, friends and members of her family.

Glennie loved to entertain and entertain she did. She opened up her home in December for groups of up to 50 to have holiday parties and hosted the NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees) Annual Christmas Dinner at which new officers were installed for the coming year. She loved having her Sunday School class, The Retired Federal Employees Association, Widowed Person's Reach Out, and neighborhood get-to-gathers. She enjoyed cooking and during the summer she canned and preserved food, not so much for herself but so she could share with anyone that might need something. She was known for her butternut squash casseroles and zucchini bread. When she made her "house calls" or "nursing visits" to give treatments, shots or whatever else the doctor may have ordered, she always took a gift of zucchini bread or something she had made.

Glennie volunteered in many areas. She was awarded the 1997 GEICO (Government Employees Insurance Companies) Public Service Award for volunteerism. As a winner of this award she and a guest were treated to an all-expense paid visit to Washington, DC, a commemorative plaque, and a monetary award, which was donated to a charity. Glennie served seven years on the Advisory Board for Widowed Persons Services, an outreach program of AARP that trained volunteers in supporting newly widowed persons. She served as a coordinator of Widowed Persons Reach Out (WPRO) a support group of Family Life Ministries of the Holston Baptist Association. Glennie worked for 11 years as a volunteer health history nurse with American Red Cross Blood Services. She served for many years as "Camp Nurse" at Camp Carson for mission groups of young girls during their annual retreat. In addition to these activities Glennie served two years as president of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees) and four years as first and second vice president, before which she chaired its ways and means committee. Glennie also volunteered for many years in the Intensive Care Waiting Room at the Johnson City Medical Center in the hospital ministry of the Holston Baptist Association.

Prior to becoming ill Glennie was very active in Southside Baptist Church where she served as WMU director for many years. She also worked with the young girls in what was then called the YWA's, now called Acteens.

Glennie never considered helping others to be volunteering; it was just her way of life. Helping other people was ingrained into her heart, body and soul. If Glennie believed something, she believed it. There was no wavering. She had a way of doing things, and she would have liked for you to do things "her way". She was a lady with a lot of grit, spunk, and determination, an inner strength that not many people possess. Glennie could also cause a "ruckus" if she was so minded. In fact she was good at it! Glennie had a brilliant mind and a beautiful smile. But, time, age and disease had a way of eroding both her mind and beautiful smile. It made it hard for her to communicate with you, but she could talk to you with her piercing eyes. You knew if she was angry, happy or if she agreed with what you were saying. You got the message loud and clear.
Glennie will be remembered for her strong faith in God, her individuality, her generosity, her love for family, and for a life well lived. Perfect? No. Human, yes! Glennie was one of a kind.

Glennie is survived by three nephews: Ron Slagle (Maria) of Bakersville, NC, Bruce Young (Aree) and Craig Young (Kathy) of Portland, OR and three nieces; Linda Hooper of Portland OR and Constance Young (Jeannie) of Camas, Washington and Virginia Adams of Gray, TN.

The family expresses their deep appreciation to Brookdale Senior Living for the kind and compassionate care they extended to Glennie for the 13 years she was a resident there. The family also expresses appreciation to the nurses at the Johnson City Medical Center on the 6400 wing. We could not have asked for any better care than what she received. For the past two years Amedisys Hospice has assisted with Glennie's care while she was at Brookdale and we want to express our appreciation to them for the many ways they cared for her.

Glennie's family will gather to greet friends and share memories on Friday October 18, 2019 at Tetrick Funeral Services from 12:30pm until the hour of service at 1:30pm with Don Courliss officiating. A Graveside will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Pall bearers will be selected from family and friends.
