    Mrs. Eulah B. “Sweetie” Mottern, age 92, of Watauga, TN passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at her residence following an extended illness.

    A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late James Bradley and Ruth Kate Watkins Shepherd. “Sweetie” was a librarian for nineteen years with the Carter County School System and retired after twelve years with the Sullivan County School System at Bluff City Middle School. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Sycamore Chapter 163 for fifty years; was a life member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War and a member of the Sullivan County Retired Teachers Association.

    Mrs. Mottern was a member of Brick Christian Church.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William E. “Sonny” Mottern; three sisters, Sallie Kate Thompson, Billie Jo Haws, Grace Pearl Shepherd and a brother, Frank Shepherd.

    Survivors include a son Sonnie Bill Mottern and wife Shelby, Bluff City, TN; a daughter, Ruth Lewis, Watauga; four grandchildren, Michelle Mottern, FL, Eddie Lewis, FL, Brad Mottern and wife Tonya, Johnson City and Carrie Brandt and husband Vernon, Bluff City; five great-grandchildren, Taylor Mottern, Blaise Kessler, Lukas Kessler, Piper Kessler and Rayanna Brandt; a great-great-granddaughter, Taylor Thurman and a great-great-great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Thurman. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    A service to honor the life of Mrs. Eulah B. “Sweetie” Mottern will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Friday, September 19, 2014 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Dr. Don Marshall and Mr. Ernie Depew ministers officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Scott Reynolds. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from Noon until 1:00 P.M. on Friday prior to the funeral service or at the residence at any time.

    Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:30 P.M. on Friday, September 19, 2014 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Mr. Wayne Mottern, minister officiating. Active pallbearers will be Joe David Mottern Tim Mottern, Stanley Mottern, Jimmy Ensor, John Watkins, Brad Haws and Darrell Haws. Honorary pallbearers will be Kagley Mottern, Henry Watkins, American Ex-Prisoners of War – East Tennessee Chapter and the deacons and elders of Brick Christian Church.

    John R. Holt, 22 Dies Of Injuries From Car Wreck

    John R. Holt, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herschel P. Hold, of Milligan College Community died at St. Elizabeth's Hospital early Saturday morning after suffering severe injuries when the car in which he was riding ran off the Fish Spring Butler Highway and turned over.

    The accident occurred about 4 a.m. and you Holt and a companion Frank Cook, lay for about two hours in the wreckage before help reached them according to Cook's statement. Cook escaped with some slight scratches but suffered severely from shock.

    At length a driver passing by noticed the wreckage and called Sheriff Tom Nave, who summoned an ambulance from the Tetrick Funeral Home. The ambulance reached the scene first and was driving away when Deputies Doc Nave and Kirk Simerly reached there.

    "The car evidently ran off the highway because of the heavy fog which was still dense when we arrived at the scene," said Glenn W. Tetrick of the funeral home. "Young Hold suffered a broken collar bone and crushed chest," Mr. Tetrick continued, "and died soon after he was placed in bed at the hospital."

    Young Hold was a veteran of World War II and was an employee of the Taylor Construction Co.

    Survivors are the parents, one brother, James Richard; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Hyder, and Peggy Ann of Milligan; maternal grandparents, Mrs. John Hold of Pauda, Ill.

    Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Hopwood Memorial Church with the Rev. Lewis, pastor of the church, and the Rev. J. H. Dampier officiating. Burial will be in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

    The body will remain in the chapel of the Roy Hathaway Funeral Home until 1:30 Monday when it will be taken to the church to lie in state one hour before services.

    Active pallbearers will be Ross, Carl, Luther, and Bradley Shepherd, Robert Taylor and J. B. Blythe. Flower bearers will be members of the King's Daughters.

    ELIZABETHTON -James Bradley (JB) Shepherd, age 89, of Elizabethton, TN went to be with his Lord surrounded by his family on July 27, 2021. JB was born in Carter County on January 25, 1932 to the late Carl Newton Shepherd and the late Ocea Lea Shell Shepherd.

    JB graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1950, where he lettered in basketball. He then graduated from Milligan College in 1954 with a BA in Business Administration. He spent two years in the U.S. Army, 18 months of which were in the Army Attaché Office at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. He worked for Monsanto Chemical Company from 1957 to 1965 located in Pensacola, Florida; Greenwood, South Carolina; and Etowah, Tennessee. From 1965 to 1978 he worked at Beaunit (formerly North American Rayon Corporation) where he was a member of management. In 1978 he became the President and part owner of Builders Supply Company in Elizabethton and Mountain City. He was the President of Alliance for Business and Training (AB&T). He was appointed as a member of The Private Industry Council (PIC) in 1983 and served as the Director until he retired in 2008. He also worked with Randall Birchfield Real Estate and Auction as a realtor and worked at a funeral home.

    JB served on the Elizabethton City Council and was elected as the Mayor of Elizabethton from 1977 to 1981 and was the chairman of the First Tennessee-Virginia Development District. He was made Honorary Sergeant at Arms in the Tennessee Senate in 1978. JB was also recognized by the VFW Post 2166 in 1978 as the Outstanding Male Citizen of the Year for his outstanding contributions to Carter County. JB was a charter member of the Jericho Temple Shrine and Watauga Lodge 622 F & M (York Rite and Scottish Rite). He was a member and former President of the Lions Club. JB was a member of the Rotary Club and also served as the President of the Etowah Rotary Club.

    JB was a longtime member of West Side Christian Church where he loved to sing in the choir. JB also enjoyed playing cards at the Elizabethton Fire Stations.

    He was proceeded in death by his first wife, Dorothea Dean Kyte Shepherd and his siblings, Carl Newton Shepherd, Jr., and Glenola Frances (Sissie) Shepherd Mottern.

    Survivors include his wife, Nan L. Shepherd, his four children: Janie Shepherd Harding (Daniel), Tracey Lee Shepherd Clock (Bob), Steven Daniel Shepherd (Tamra) and Nathan Bradley Shepherd (Regina), six grandchildren, Lindsey Jane Stagner (Harley), Daniel Lee (Bo) Harding ), Kathryn Dean (Katie) Barton (Mark), Ryan Andrew Clock (Sarah), JonWyatt Shepherd and Nathanial Luke Shepherd, and eight great grandchildren: Olivia Knapp, Lila Belle Harding, Bodhi Barton, River Dean Harding, Ocie Barton, Alice Clock, Theodore Clock, and West Harding, and his sister, Mary Lynn Phillips. In addition many several nieces, nephews and cousins.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Greg Key, Minister officiating. Music will be provided by Scott Reynolds and Ryan Eggers. Entombment will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2021 in the Mausoleum of Faith, Happy Valley Memorial Park.
