    GREENBACK - Billy Joe Bowman of Greenback, TN formerly of Johnson City, TN passed away Sunday 22 August at the age of 91. A 1948 graduate of Science Hill High School, Billy Joe pitched the Hilltoppers to the 1947 State Championship and was inducted into the Science Hill Hall of Fame in 2007. His on the field successes led to a full scholarship at the University of Tennessee where Bowman collected wins over Princeton and USC in the semi-finals of the 1951 College World series in route to a runner up finish. After graduation in 1952, Bowman signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization returning to Johnson City to begin his professional career. Billy Joe's baseball career was interrupted by a two-year stint in Korea serving his country as a transportation officer in the United States Army. With his military obligation complete, Bowman returned to baseball where he collected a 56-36 record in minor league baseball reaching AAA with the Rochester Red Wings and Houston Buffs. With his playing days over, Billy Joe joined the Houston Astros in various capacities including pitching coach and assistant manager working in the Astros organization 28 years. In his time with the Astros, Bowman had the pleasure of working with Hall of Fame players such as Nolan Ryan, Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, and Yogi Berra. His time in Houston was capped by being named the 1995 Houston Astros Distinguished Houstonian. Bowman returned to his roots in East Tennessee in 1996 and continued the trucking company he successfully grew for 40 years. He remained lifelong fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and Houston Astros. In his final years he loved nothing more than attending Science Hill and Johnson City Cardinal games and being around the game he loved so much. He was preceded in death by his infant son Charles Frances Bowman, parents John Frank and Dorothy Randolph Bowman, sister Helen Arwood, and brothers Ferrell and Charlie all of Johnson City, TN. He is survived by his sons Joel Wayne Bowman (Terri) of Houston, TX and Lt Cmdr. John Paul Bowman (Jessica) of Lemoore, CA. Also, he is survived by his grandchildren Jessica, Josh, Jay and Diana along with brother Kenneth, six great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law, Mag and Becky Bowman. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Lou and Maxine Potenza for their vigilant care as Billy Joe's Johnson City neighbors and Toni and Miranda with Amedysis Hospice for the care they provided in his final year. A full military honors memorial service and burial will be held on October 18th 2021 at 11:00am at the Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City, Tennessee.

    JOHNSON CITY - Helen Bowman Arwood, 89, Johnson City, died Thursday, June 17, 2021, following a brief illness, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

    Helen was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late John Frank and Dorothy Randolph Bowman.

    Helen was a Kindergarten Teacher at Farmer in the Dell, retiring in 1990 after thirty-eight years of service.

    She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.

    In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lucy Leah Arwood, and two brothers, Earnest Ferrell Bowman and Charles Edward Bowman.

    She is survived by her husband of sixty-five years, James F. Arwood, Sr.; five children, Judy Mays and husband David, Knoxville, Teresa Ford and husband Tony, Piney Flats, James Arwood, Jr., Mike Arwood and wife Janice, Dandridge, Cathy McNeil and husband Thomas, Hampton; two brothers, Billy Joe Bowman and Kenneth Wayne Bowman, both of Johnson City; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

    There will be a private service for the family at a later date.

    JOHNSON CITY - Earnest Ferrell Bowman, 84 went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday night, August 4, 2019, at his home.

    Earnest was born on July 28, 1935, in Johnson City, TN, to John Frank Bowman and the late Dorothy Randolph Bowman.

    A native of Johnson City, TN, Earnest lived in the Tri-Cities area for the most part of his life. In 1954 he graduated of Science Hill and attended ETSU where he was an athlete and played ball for 14 years. Earnest Ferrell Bowman played Baseball for the San Francisco Giants from 1961 to 1963 and played in the 1962 World Series.

    Mr. Earnest Ferrell Bowman was of the Baptist Faith. His special hobbies was that he enjoyed golf and enjoyed helping Children.

    Aside from his father, John Frank Bowman and his mother Dorothy Randolph Bowman those left to cherish his memory is his wife 47 years Magdalene Norris Bowman. Surviving Daughter: Lisa Novalsky. Surviving Sons: John Ferrell Bowman. Surviving Sisters: Helen Arwood and her husband J.F Arwood. Surviving Brothers: Billy Joe Bowman, Charlie Bowman and Becky, Kenneth Wayne Bowman. Four Grandchildren Emily, Britany, Thomas and Rachel. And also several Nieces and Nephews.

    The family will be receiving friends and family on Thursday August 8, 2019, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Memorial Service will be at 8:00 PM at Snyder's Memorial Gardens located at 5913 Kingsport Highway, Gray, TN 37615. Officiating Pastor Travis Tyler.

    The Grave Side service will be on Friday August 9, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Snyders Memorial Gardens.

    Charles “Charlie” Edward Bowman, 82, Gray, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2021, at his residence.

    Charlie was born in Johnson City to the late John Frank and Dorothy Randolph Bowman.

    He graduated from Science Hill High School and retired from TPI. He was of the Baptist faith. Charlie was a gifted athlete who played all sports and ran track. He was especially proud to have pitched the first little league game in Johnson City at Mountain Home on June 13, 1951.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Earnest Ferrell Bowman.

    Survivors include: his wife, Becky Shore Bowman; one sister, Helen Arwood and her husband J.F.; two brothers, Billy Joe and Kenneth Wayne Bowman; mother-in-law, Mary Shore; special brother-in-law, Bill Shore and his wife Carole; two sisters-in-law, Lisa Shore Crawford, who was more like a sister and Magdalene Bowman; and several special nieces and nephews.

    A committal service will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 under the portico of the mausoleum chapel at Washington County Memory Gardens.

    JOHNSON CITY - Kenneth Wayne “Wiener” Bowman, 80 of Johnson City passed away peacefully at Life Care of Elizabethton on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. Ken was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, March 24, 1942 to the late J. Frank and Dorothy Randolph Bowman. He graduated from Science Hill High School and retired from TPI. He attended Keystone Free Will Baptist Church. He grew up around baseball and his most enjoyable times were umpiring ballgames for several years. Most of the games he umpired were at Wing Deer Park in Johnson City. He was an Umpire-In-Chief for District 1 for Tennessee ASA. He enjoyed making people laugh and always had a joke to tell or a card trick to show. No matter what, he always had a smile on his face and never met a stranger. Sherrell Gage would say “Kenny was one heck of a nice guy, super good friend”.

    In addition to his parents, Ken is preceded in death by his wife: Carolyn Bowman, three brothers: Ferrell Bowman, Charlie Bowman and Billy Joe Bowman. One Sister: Helen Arwood.

    Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters: Tonya B. Davis and husband Kenny, and Tika L. Wimer and husband Mike. Two Sisters-In-Law: Becky Bowman and Mag Bowman. One Brother-In-Law: J.F. Arwood. Several nieces and nephews, family and friends, a special friend: Sherrell Gage.
