Mr. Marion Jessie Linville, 77, died Thursday, December 4, 1997 at the Johnson
City Medical Center.

Mr. Linville was a lifelong Unicoi County resident and a son of the late Nate
D. and Bessie Tapp Linville. He served as a Seaman II Class with the United
States Navy during World War II, while stationed in San Leandro, California.
He retired from Kloppers, Baltimore, Maryland as a machinist following 40
years of service. Mr. Linville was a member of Centenary United Methodist
Church, Erwin where he served in various offices of the church, including
serving on the Board of Trustees for several years.

Mr. Linville was preceded in death by one son, Marion Dennis Linville, on May
14, 1989. Survivors include his wife, Daphne Bellamy Linville; one daughter
and son-in-law, Linda and Robert "Bob" Meil, Westminster, Maryland; one son
and daughter-in-law, Joseph E. and Patricia Linville, Westminster, Maryland;
six sisters, Mrs. Lucille Piercy, Burnsville, North Carolina; Mrs. Margaret
Ann Yeager, Knoxville; and Mrs. Marie Ramsey, Mrs. Betty Black, Mrs. Eula Mae
Tipton, and Mrs. Kaye McInturff, all of Unicoi; three brothers, Robert C.
Linville, H.C. Linville, and James Linville, all of Unicoi; seven
grandchildren, Denise Stansburg, David Linville, Barbara Hunter, Susan Oak,
Deborah Owens, Julie Ann Linville, and Rebecca Linville; six great-
grandchildren, Robert Bromwell, Brad Bromwell, Richard Hunter, David Owens,
Megan Owens and Kelly Linville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a son of the late Nathaniel David and Bessie Tapp Linville and was also preceded in death by a brother, Marion Linville.

Mr. Linville was a World War II Army Veteran, having served in the European Theatre with the 822 M.P. Company.

He was a retired school teacher, having taught in Augusta, Ga., at Love Chapel Elementary School and at the former Limestone Cove Elementary School, where he had also served as principal.

He was a member of Unicoi United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Chancel Choir and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Unicoi Masonic Lodge No. 681 F&AM, the Unicoi-Erwin Order of Eastern Star No. 276 and the Unicoi Ruritan Club.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 15, 2001 from the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment followed at Roselawn Memory Gardens.

She was the daughter of the late Gene and Racheal Linville McLaughlin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Garrison, in August, 1995, and by a great-great grandson, Shawn Sloan.

She had been a Certified Nursing Assistant at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was a member of East Side Christian Church.

Funeral service were conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2001, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home.

Graveside service and interment was held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2001, in the Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Mrs. Opal Valdean Bennett age 86, Jonesborough, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2021 at her residence.

Mrs. Bennett was born in Unicoi, Tennessee and the daughter of the late Samuel Eugene & Rachel Linville McLaughlin.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Bennett; son, James Alan Bennett, Sr. (Heather) daughters, Tammy Bennett Steffey and Teresa Bennett; two sisters, Esther "Charline" Church and Jewel Stewart; grandchildren, James Alan Bennett, Jr., Daniel Lee Bennett, Whitney Cheyenne Douglas, Samantha Lee Campbell, Michael Eugene Williford and Tia Skye Thompson; ten great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Thursday, April 22, 2021 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 PM Friday, April 23, 2021 at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Family request friends meet at the cemetery at 1:45 pm Friday.
Pallbearers will be James Bennett, Sr., James Bennett, Jr., Gabe Douglas, Michael Williford, Brison Campbell and Nathan Ledford.

UNICOI - Esther Charlene Church, age 83, Unicoi, with faith and trust in Jesus, departed on a journey and left the cares of this life behind her on Friday, December 10, 2021, while she was surrounded by her family at her home. We are sad to see her go because she gave her family constant love and understanding, always keeping us anchored. She was born August 30,1938, starting life in a barn converted into a house. Esther is a daughter of the late Samuel Eugene McLaughlin and Rachael Linville McLaughlin. She lived most of her life less than a mile away from her birthplace.
Esther was successful in helping to provide for her family through hard work and long hours. First, as the wife of a farmer who worked at other jobs, making it necessary for her to be in the fields from daylight until dark while cooking for the family and keeping up with two sons. Then, as one of the original four owners of Jones & Church Farms, where she was integral in getting the operation up and running; working in the greenhouse, planting in the field, working on the grading line at the packing house, doing payroll, and countless other things that would come up almost daily in the early years.
She never stopped trying to improve herself earning an Associate’s Degree in Accounting when she was in her mid-40’s, working at Texas Instruments (later Siemens), while still working part-time with the farm operation. Never one to equate money with success, she said she was happiest when she was living day to day with very little cash in her pocket and pinching pennies in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
She urged her sons to live life to its fullest stressing education, the one thing no one can take away from you, and following their dreams. She paid for her grandchildren’s education so their dreams could have a solid foundation and sent them on adventures all over the world. Even so, those same grandchildren’s best memories were in her front yard or every Friday night at her house which became known as mamaw’s night.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters: Rosalie who died as an infant, Violet Garrison, and Opal Bennett; one brother Roy Moody McLaughlin.
She is survived by two sons: Michael Church (Rosaelia), and Gregory Church (Amy); five grandchildren: Samuel Church (Ellen), Joshua Church, Lacy Church, Carina Church, and Caleb Church; one sister, Jewel Stewart; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, from 5:00-7:00 P.M. in the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Jeremy Dykes will officiate the 7:00 P.M. funeral service. Committal will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 16, 2021, in the Roselawn Memory Gardens.

JOHNSON CITY - Steven R. McLaughlin, age 63, of Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 9, 2019. Steve was born in Johnson City to the late Roy and Genevie Jamison McLaughlin.

Steven was retired from Nuclear Fuel Services after 27 years of employment. He was a member of Grace Freewill Baptist Church, Johnson City. Steve was an avid fisherman and was known as "The great American Fisherman".

Those left to cherish his memory include, his son, Travis McLaughlin, and his wife Whitney, of Johnson City; a daughter, Lindsay Lester, and her husband Kevin, of Morristown; two grandsons, Kannon Lester and Karson Lester, of Morristown; a brother, Randy McLaughlin, and his wife Barbara, of Kingsport; former wife, Judy McLaughlin, of Johnson City.

A Gathering of Remembrance service will be held at 6:00 PM, on Monday, January 14, 2019 at Grace Freewill Baptist Church in Johnson City, with Mr. Curtis Hurt, Pastor, officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00-6:00 PM prior to the service on Monday at the Church.
