    Notes:

    Nick was born on December 26, 1851. By the time Nick was just three years old both his mother, Mary Heaton Grindstaff, and his father, Issac Grindstaff, died. Nick and his three siblings were left orphans. Nick lived with relatives until he was 21 years old. He was an active member of the Baptist church. At age 21 Nick's parents' farm was divided into fourths for the children. Nick built a house on his fourth and began to farm the land. After five years of farming Nick sold his farm to E. S. Jordon and decided to go west.

    Nick was robbed of everything he owned. He went to Benjamin Wilson in Missouri for help. Benjamin had moved to Missouri from Carter County. Benjamin sent Nick back home. After Nick return he lived with Mr. Jordan. He refused to stay with any of his relatives. After a while Nick decided to live on Iron Mountain. He went to the highest peak where Johnson and Carter Counties dividing line are and built a hut of logs and boards. Nick lived in this hut for more than 30 years. Nick stayed busy clearing land, building fences, and raising a garden. He gathered roots and herbs and traded them for supplies.

    Nick defended himself with a barlow knife, an ax, and a hickory stick. Although Nick isolated himself and looked rugged from the many layers of old clothes and the long hair he wore, no one was afraid of him because of his kindness.

    On July 21, 1923 Baxter McEwen went by to check on Nick. He found him dead on the bunk in his hut. His faithful dog had been keeping watch over his master's dead body for the past three or four days. The dog had to be tied before men could carry out Nick's body for burial. Nick was buried on the mountain peak where he lived the last 30 years of his life. A gravestone was erected so passersby would remember Nick. Today the Appalachian Trail passes by the area. The Cherokee National Forest maintains the monument that marks Nick's burial site.

    Thomas Heaton, 82, died at his home in Valley Forge this morning at 7 o'clock. He is survived by sons, Pat and Rube, daughters, Mrs. Allen Lovelace and Mrs. Ora Scalf.
    Funeral services will be held from the home of the daughter, Mrs. Lovelace, at Valley Forge, Sunday at 10 o'clock. Interment will take place at the Bowers Cemetery, the Nave Funeral Home in charge. Complete funeral arrangements were not finished this morning.
    Several grandchildren and a host of friends mourn the passing of Mrs. Heaton.

    John H. Heaton, age 82, died suddenly at his home, Siam, Sunday morning at 6:00 o'clock.
    Funeral services will be conducted from the Siam Baptist church Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock with the Rev. H. C. Hopkins officiating. Interment will be in the Lacy cemetery, at Blevins, Tenn.

    Rhoda Collins Dies, leaving 159 Direct Descendants
    Mrs. Rhoda Catherine Collins, 87, died at her home on Route 1 Thursday at 12:15 a.m. after a five weeks illness. She was a member of the Siam Baptist Church. Her husband, Jackson C. Collins preceded her in death in 1928.
    She is survived by two sons, J. K. Collins and G. C. Collins, both of Route 1, Elizabethton; four daughters, Mrs. Callie McKernan, and Mrs. S. B Randolph, both of Route 1, Elizabethton, Mrs. Kate Dougherty and Mrs. Lue Masters both of Erwin; 45 grandchildren and 98 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Miss Nancy Heaton or Route 1, Elizabethton.
    Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Siam Baptist Church with the Rev. Willis B. Allen officiating, assisted by the Rev. Johnnie Riddle and the Rev. R. C. Stockton. Burial will be in the Bowers Cemetery on Route 2.
    Active pallbearers will be the great grandchildren, Donald, Floyd, Richard and Willard Collins, Harold Harvey, Ted Edwards, Charles Lipford and Bill Carpenter.
    The great granddaughters will serve as flower bearers.
    The body will be removed to the home today at 3:30 p.m. from the chapel of the Tetrick Funeral Home where it will remain until 1:00 p.m. Sunday when it will taken to the church to lie in state until the funeral hour.
