Mary Ellen Godsey

Mary Ellen (Godsey) Cowan, born May 31, 1940, walked through the Gates of Heaven on Monday, December 23, 2019.

A lifelong native of Johnson City, she is the daughter of the late James Thomas and Beulah Vashti (Sutphin) Godsey. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, William T. Cowan; brothers, Ralph Edward Godsey and David Lowry Godsey; and granddaughter, Heather Pate Rutledge.

Mary loved her family and friends and was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church and loved serving her Lord and Savior. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Nolichuckey Grand View # 194, and would have been a member 30 years in January 2020. Mary retired from Snap-On Tools in Elizabethton after nineteen years.

Those left to cherish Mary's memory include: siblings, James Thomas "Bud" Godsey Jr. of Illinois, Richard Allen Godsey of Johnson City, John Calvin Godsey of Jonesborough, and Michael Blaine Godsey of Florida; children, Tommy Ray Cowan (Laura Cowan) of Elizabethton, and Kathy Darlene Waldrop (Robert William Miller) of Jonesborough; grandchildren, Valerie Cowan Hyatt, Thomas Cowan, Amber Pate, Whittney Pate Rutledge, Jennifer Stewart Reed, and Kimberly Marshall; special family member, Karen Conkin; fifteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Mary married William Thomas "Tom" Cowan about 1960 in Washintgon County, , , Tennessee. William (son of Wiley Thomas Cowan and Julia Guy) was born about 1939 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee; died on 8 Jun 2018 in Washintgon County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Cowan Cemetery, , Johnson County, Tennessee.
