    Montie Elmer Chesser, 70, Rt 2, died Friday in Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness. A native of Carter County he was the son of Henry and Lydia Lyons Chesser. Mr. Chesser was a member of Lyons Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He was a carpenter, a farmer, and lumberman.

    He was preceded in death by one daughter, one son, and four brothers.

    Survivors include his wife Mrs. Mae Sheets Chesser, three sons, Roger Harold Chesser, Montie D. Chesser and Montie Earl Chesser, all of Johnson City. Four daughters, Mrs Eunice Hicks, Mrs. Peggy Hicks, and Mrs. Mary Butler all of Jonesboro and Mrs. Louise Blevins; one sister Mrs. Alice Whitson of Johnson City; 21 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

    Montie married Verna Mae Sheets about 1933 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Verna (daughter of Benjamin H.     JOHNSON CITY - Ethel May Lyons Street, 101 years young, of Johnson City, passed away on Monday, February, 26, 2018.

    She was a native of Carter County and daughter of the late Robert Lyons and Mary Ann Grindstaff Lyons.

    In addition to her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Lawrence Street; brothers: Robert Lyons, Basil Lyons, and Henry F. Lyons; sisters: Tempie Lyons, and Joyce Dennis Hale; her sons-in-law, Jimmy Henley, and Delbert Dempsey.

    She was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. Everyone who knew Ethel, called her "Nanny".

    Those family members left to cherish Ethel's memory include her children: Norma Dempsey, Wayne Street (Helen), Richard Lee Street (Shirley), Larry Street (Ann), Lucy Henley, Melinda Sue Smith (Bill), and James Street (Janel); 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren; sisters, Jean Mast, and Rose Corell; brother, Carroll Dennis, several nieces and nephews..

    In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be sent to St. Jude's Children's Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis TN 38105.

    The family will greet friends to share memories on Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 5:00 pm until a Celebration of Ethel's Life at 7:00 pm in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services with Pastor Keith Malone officiating. A Graveside and Committal Service will be held at 10:45 am on Friday at Mt. Home National Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jerry Barnett, Coty Malone, Dakota Lail, Taylor Pruett, John Foshie, and Fred Smith.

    Mrs. Gladys Marie Norton, age 92, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2015 in the Life Care Center of Elizabethton following an extended illness.

    A native of Butler, TN she was the daughter of the late George and Agnes Greer Lyons. She retired as an office worker from TN Eastman.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Norton and a great-grandson, Jonathan Woodby.

    Survivors include a daughter, Wilma Perkins and husband Dan and a son, Terry Woodby, all of Elizabethton; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren and two sisters, Della Driscoll, Elizabethton and Dorothy Hopson, Big Stone Gap, VA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    A service to honor the life of Mrs. Gladys Marie Norton will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Saturday, February 21, 2015 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Dr. Alan King officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Saturday prior to the funeral service. Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, February 22, 2015 in the Lyons Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Lee Woodby, Kevin Woodby, Joe Jamison, Jim Jamison, Mel Ramey, Josh Jamison, Jacob Woodby and Allen Dykes.

    Della Lee Lyons Woodby Driscoll, age 87, of Elizabethton, TN, passed away Friday, December 20, 2019, at the residence of a son and daughter-in-law, Darris and Ivy Woodby. She was born in Johnson City, TN and was the daughter of the late George Washington Lyons and Agnes Greer Lyons. Della was a homemaker and she was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and all types of crafts including painting, quilting, ceramics, jewelry making and upholstery work.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William Warren Woodby and her second husband Robert Newman Driscoll; a son, Ronell Driscoll; a granddaughter, Contessa Dee Vanorsdale Besaw; a great-grandson, Jonathan Woodby; a daughter-in-law, Carol Kursey; a niece, Patsy Hopson Mutter and three sisters, Dorothy Hopson, Gladys Norton and Phyllis Lyons. Those left to cherish her memory include three sons, Marion Woodby and wife Jean, Martinsburg, WV, Terry Woodby, and Darris Woodby and wife Ivy, all of Elizabethton; four daughters, Evangeline Driscoll Vanorsdale Tipton, Limestone, TN, Teresa Elaine Driscoll Balderas, Johnson City, Darla Davidson Ripley and husband Robert, Harrisonburg, PA and Amanda Lee Driscoll Adkin and husband Lucas, Stopover, KY. Twenty-two grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, several great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

    A service to honor the life of Della Lee Lyons Woodby Driscoll will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, December 23, 2019, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Timmy Broyles officiating. Interment will follow the funeral service in the Lyons Cemetery on Monday. Active pallbearers will be grandchildren, Jacob Woodby, Marion Woodby, Timmy Woodby, Steven Woodby, Lee Woodby, Kevin Woodby, Mark Woodby and Ralph Vanorsdale. Honorary pallbearers will be Ronell Dean "Dino" Driscoll, Jr. and her many friends.

    Dorothy Lyons Hopson Moore, 93, of Big Stone Gap, VA, died Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at the Heritage Hall of Big Stone Gap.

    She was a daughter of the late George Washington and Agnes Dellarae Greer Lyons.

    First and foremost our Mom was a Christian. She loved her church family at Keystone Free Will Baptist Church. When she moved to Big Stone Gap, she worshiped at Trinity United Methodist Church and Heritage Church of God where her son-in-law Ronnie was pastor.

    In addition to her parents, her husband, Worley K. Hopson, Son, Bruce Marion and wife Mary, a sister, Gladys Norton and her second husband, H. L. Moore, precedes Dorothy in death.

    Survivors include: her daughter Patsy A. and husband Ronnie Mutter and their children and son, Larry K. Hopson and wife Betty Jane and their children; her sister, Della "Dee" Driscoll, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and special friends, Nancy, Hope, Patti and Dottie.

    Dorothy's family would like to extend love and special thanks to PACE and Heritage Hall nursing home of Big Stone Gap.

    The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home in Dogwood Chapel, from 12:00 pm until 1:30 pm. A funeral service will follow under the direction of Rev. Bill Greer, Rev. Ronnie Mutter and Rev. Terry Jones. The Keystone Free Will Baptist Trio will provide special music. A committal service will be conducted at the Lyons Chapel Cemetery.

    She was exceedingly generous to everyone; caring for others appeared to come naturally. She was always authentic, genuine, and honest. If you knew her, you were likely touched by her generosity.
    She is survived by her two children, four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
    She is being honored at a private graveside service at the VA Mountain Home on Monday, May 2nd, 2022.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Fred T. & Ethel M. Lowe Chesser. Mrs. Johnson retired from the Kitchen staff at Milligan College. She was of the Free Will Baptist Faith. She loved her family, cooking and canning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands: Clifton Collins and Harold Johnson, a daughter: Nancy Collins, Three sons: Rusty, Randy and Freddie Collins an infant son, an infant daughter, three brothers: Clyde, Allen & Harrison Chesser and a sister: Linda Faye Chesser.

    Survivors include Three Daughters: Joan Garland, Joyce Miller & husband Sonny all of Elizabethton and Judy Bowling & husband Dean, Hampton. A Step-Son: Keith Johnson, Roan Mountain. Six Grandchildren: Jason Collins, Cynthia Bowling, Daniel Bowling, Joey Miller, Brandon Garland and Lucas Garland. Five Great Grandchildren: Curtiss Carden, Haley Carden, Kaleb Miller, Paige Collins and Daniel Bowling. Two Brothers: Ray Chesser and wife Charlotte, and Norman Chesser and wife Connie. Several nieces & nephews.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 2017 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Danny Blevins and Rev. Dexter Brumit officiating. Interment will follow in the Lyons Cemetery. Music will be provided by Dexter & Phyllis Brumit. Mrs. Blevins was a member of First Baptist Church but attended Valley Forge United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Blevins who passed away July 19, 2008, by two brothers: Alfred & Harold Chesser and a sister, Mary Benfield.

    Survivors include her sons & daughters-in-law: Carter & Terri Blevins and C.J. & Leslie Blevins all of Elizabethton. A daughter: Christine Hardin, Johnson City. Four Grandchildren: Sarah Putland & husband Steve, Abigail Blevins, Brock Morell and Tatum Morell. Her Sisters: Eunice Hicks and Peggy Hicks both of Jonesborough, a brother: MD Chesser, Elizabethton. Her special friends: Shirley Fender, Dorothy Little, Hester Layne, Barbara Anthony and Ruth Barnett.

    ELIZABETHTON - Montie "Earl" Chesser, age 59, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at his beloved home. He was born in Carter County, Tennessee.

    Earl enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 18, and devoted 4 years to serving our country. After retirement from the armed forces, Earl returned to Carter County to pursue his career, and natural talent as a Diesel Mechanic. Earl was a 'Good Ol' Country Boy" in every sense of the term. It didn't matter if Earl was fishing, shooting guns, or driving around enjoying the natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, he was always enjoying life's simplest pleasures.

    He is survived by his only child who was his pride and joy, Amanda Thrift also known as Brute or Bae throughout her childhood years; his former spouse, Cindy Chesser; five brothers, M.D. Chesser, Robert Benfield, Dale Benfield, Alan Benfield, and Danny Ray Benfield; six sisters, Peggy Hicks, Unise Hicks, Louse Blevins, Connie Henry, Willma Benfield, and Mary Sparks, who all reside in East Tennessee.

    Earl will continue to be loved and forever missed by his family, friends, and beloved cat, Noodles.

    A Committal Service and Inurnment will be held at 1:45PM Friday, April 12, 2019 at Mountain Home National Cemetery with military honors to be rendered by the Boone Dam VFW Post #4933.

    JOHNSON CITY - Betty Jean Casteel Miller, 80, of Johnson City passed away on October 28, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

    A native of Washington County, she is the daughter of the late Elbert and Eliza Lyons Casteel. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Edward Miller; son, Roger Sells Miller; and sisters, Margie Fry and Christine Owen.

    Betty was of the Free Will Baptist faith and is described by loved ones as energetic and feisty. She was a loving, strong woman who loved cooking, spending time with her family, and loving on her dog, Kilbee.

    Those left to cherish Betty's memory include: son, Ricky Edward Miller of Johnson City; brothers, Frank Casteel, Jr., Cecil Casteel, Gilbert Casteel, Joe Casteel, David Casteel, Wayne Casteel, and R.Y. Casteel; sisters, Francis Jones and Barbara Jones; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and special friend, James Rowe.

    The family would like to extend a special thank you to all friends and family and the 6300 floor of the JCMC.

    The family will receive friends to share memories on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 from 4:00 PM until a celebration of Betty's Life beginning at 7:00 PM in the sunrise chapel of Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services, Johnson City, with Reverend Tony Trott officiating. An entombment will be held in the mausoleum at Washington County Memory Gardens, Johnson City on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 1:00 PM. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:50 PM. Brian Harrison, Aaron Billings, Sam Harrison, Jason Miller, Bobby Tester, and Shawn Jenkins will serve as pallbearers. Gage Whitaker will serve as an honorary pallbearer.
