GREEN MOUNTAIN, NC - Juanita (Peterson) Gouge, age 87, of Green Mountain, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at The Waters of Johnson City.

A native of Green Mountain, NC, Juanita is a daughter of the late Floyde B. and Ethel (Johnson) Peterson. She was an active member of Peterson Chapel Church of the Brethren in Green Mountain, NC, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Song Leader and Fundraiser for the church. She enjoyed gardening, farming and crafting. In addition to her parents, Juanita is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years: Kenneth Gouge; sister and brother-in-law: Wanda and Ted Tipton; and infant daughter: Anita Diana Gouge, who passed away shortly after birth.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Juanita (Peterson) Gouge in a funeral service to be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 11, 2020, in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home. Reverend Randy Griffith and Reverend Jim Griffith will officiate. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 11, 2020 and will continue until service time in the chapel at Valley Funeral Home. A graveside committal service will follow the service in Roselawn Memory Gardens.

Wanda Lee Tipton, age 85, of Burnsville, NC went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 9th, 2019 at Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol, TN after a brief illness.

A native of Green Mountain NC, she was a daughter of the late Floyd B. and Ethel Johnson Peterson.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ted Tipton who passed away on December 1st, 2018.

Wanda was a 1952 graduate of Tipton Hill High School and an active member of Peterson Chapel Brethren Church, where she was the Superintendent for a number of years.

She taught craft making at Mayland Technical College for a number of years and was a faithful participant at the Mt. Mitchell Crafts Fair, where she made quilts, dolls, aprons and various crafts.

She will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother and sister.

Surviving is her daughter, Donna Tipton Charlton and husband, Mike, of Burnsville, NC; sister, Juanita Gouge, a resident of The Waters in Johnson City, TN; brother-in-law, Stanley Tipton of Erwin, TN and sisters-in-law, Barbara Miller and Betty Tipton both of Green Mountain, NC. Several cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, December 13th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Rev. Randy Griffith, Rev. Jim Griffith and Rev. Terry Long will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.

An additional funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Ledford Funeral Home in Erwin, TN with Rev. Randy and Jim Griffith will officiate. Burial will follow in the Roselawn Memory Gardens.

JOHNSON CITY - Curley Peterson, 84, of Johnson City, peacefully passed away in the hospice community living center at the James H. Quillen Veteran’s Administration Hospital on Sunday, March 8, 2020.

He was born on March 28, 1935 in Poplar, North Carolina to Sidney and Flossie Peterson, and was the second of four children.
the U.S Navy at the tender age of 16. He served his country well and retired after 20 years as a chief petty officer on Nuclear submarines.

Curley married the love of his life, Barbara Ann McKinney in Erwin, TN on June 4, 1954. They were married for 61 years when his beloved wife passed away. They had two children.

After retiring from the Navy in 1971, Curley moved his family from Charleston, SC to Johnson City, TN to be close to immediate family. While working full time, Curley entered college and graduated with a BS degree in accounting. He spent the remainder of his working career as an accountant. When Curley retired, he enjoyed woodworking and gardening with his wife. His faith and family meant everything to him. He was a faithful, humble servant and served in the capacity of treasurer and deacon in the various churches he attended. Curley was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City.

Curley was a loving, devoted father to two daughters: Theresa (James) Buchanan, of Petersburg, VA, and Belinda Miller, of Johnson City; and a very proud grandfather to one granddaughter, Kaitlin Miller. He was a very loving brother to Malone, Phyllis, and the late, Nella Jane, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Curley was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Flossie Peterson, his wife Barbara, and his sister, Nella Jane. He will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a gentle, humble, selfless, kind, Godly man, who loved his faith, family, and country.

The family will greet friends to share memories in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 from 4:00 pm until a Celebration of Life Service at 6:00 PM with Pastor Phil Graeber and Pastor Randy Griffith officiating. An Entombment and Committal service will be held at 12:00 pm on Thursday at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Shirley Shelley Barnett, age 85, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2023 at Center on Aging and Health. Shirley was born in Poplar, NC but was a lifelong resident of Erwin. She is a daughter of the late Joel Kelcey and Pansy Peterson Shelley. Mrs. Shelley is a member of First Church of the Brethren. She loved being outdoors gardening, doing yardwork and had a deep love for her family. Shirley was employed by the former Industrial Garments and Red Cap Industries from 1956 until her retirement. In addition to her parents, Shirley is preceded in death by brother-in-law, Ellis Murphy.

Shirley Shelley Barnett has left behind to cherish her memory: loving husband of 65 years, Oden Barnett; daughter, Pamela Willis and husband, Michael; son, Kevin “Odie” Barnett; grandchildren, Laura Morgan Willis Padgett and husband, Austin, Payge Nicole Weaver and husband, Ike, Brooke Elizabeth Barnett; great grandchildren, Harper and Hayden Weaver; brother, Bill Shelley and wife, Charlotte; and sister, Doris Murphy.

JOHNSON CITY - Jane Peterson Leonard, age 89, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, February 25, 2022, at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton, Tennessee after suffering complications from a hip fracture. She was born on May 21, 1932, the oldest daughter of the late Samuel Jeffrey Peterson and Mollie Edith Ledford Peterson. In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Roy Leonard, Jr; and one son, Robert Steven Leonard.
Jane was a devoted wife and mother who loved unconditionally. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her. She graduated from Science Hill High School in 1950, where she had the honor of being a Junior ROTC sponsor, and she attended Judson College for women in Marion, Alabama. She was also member of the Junior Monday Club and the Junior Service League where she contributed to their many charitable efforts in the community. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where she served faithfully on the Altar Guild for many years. She was an incredibly talented seamstress and she loved playing tennis, reading and being with her family.
She is survived by one daughter, Melinda, and her husband Kennie Boling; And she leaves behind one living son, Jeff Leonard. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Debbie Leonard. And Jane is survived by five grandchildren: Bradley Boling, S.J. Leonard and Jasmine, Jessica (Leonard) Blevins, Seth Leonard and his wife Ellyn, and Emily (Leonard) Palan. Jane will also be greatly missed by her four great grandchildren, Jacob and Mia Blevins, and Bryan, and Ronin Leonard. Jane is also survived by her sister, Shirley Peterson Cloyd. And she also leaves behind one living brother-in-law, Dwight “Greasy” Leonard, and several nieces and nephews.
A Committal Service and Internment will be held on Friday, March 4, 2022, at noon in the Garden of the Gospels at Monte Vista Memorial Park with The Reverend Laura A. Bryant officiating.
