    Buried:
    He was the son of the late Henry G. and Fannie E. Crowder. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Crowder; three brothers, Dock Crowder, Fred Crowder and Isaac Crowder; and two sisters, Marie Crowder and Mrs. Dena Moore.

    Mr. Crowder was a faithful Christian and was a member of the Church of Christ where he had taught adult Bible classes for more than 50 years.

    He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, France and eight major campaigns on the European front.

    He was at graduate of East Tennessee State University and the University of Michigan. He taught math at Cloudland High School. He served in the Flint Community Public Schools, Flint, Mich., for more than 30 years, where he was prinicpal of Flint Central High School and superintendent of the public schools. Mr. Crowder served on the Board of Directors of the Flint Area School Employees Credit Union for 24 years.

    Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, May 7, 2001, in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home.

    Graveside services and interment were conducted at ll a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

    ELIZABETHTON - Samuel R. Crowder, age 84, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Sam was born in Carter County, a son of the late Henry Grady Crowder and Fannie Elvira Crowder. In addition to his parents, Sam was also preceded in death by seven sisters, Florence, Ella, Edith, Dena, Geneva, Massie and Marie; five brothers, Dock, Don, Jack, Fred and Marcus; one grandchild, Samuel Jason Barnett; and his son-in-law, Johnny Barnett.

    Sam was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. He owned and operated J & S Fence Company and was a United States Army veteran. Sam had been a member of the Elizabethton High School Sports Boosters Club in years past and enjoyed UT Sports and spending as much time as possible with his beloved family, especially his granddaughter and great grandchildren.

    Those left to remember and cherish Sam’s legacy include his wife, Loretta Shull Crowder; his children, Rene Barnett (Benny Montgomery) and Samuel (Sambo) Crowder, II (Missi); his sisters, Mary Lyons, Ida (Jack) Tkatch and Isabelle Bowers; his granddaughter, Jessica Barnett Markland (Justyn); his great grandchildren, Arya Markland and Ezra Markland; as well as bonus grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

    Private services will be held by the family with a celebration of life to be held at a later date. Active pallbearers will be John Williams, Kevin Kiser, Keith Turner, Len Dugger, Benny Montgomery, Bryson Montgomery, John L. Bowers, III, and Chris Mathes. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Carver, Roy Huskins, Richard Hyder, Eddie Stockton, Perry Perkins, Jack Tkatch, and Mitchell Carpenter.

    Woody Crowder, age 69, of Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Monday, September 9, 2019. He was born April 30, 1950 in Elizabethton, Tennessee.

    He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and East Tennessee State University. He managed restaurants for several years and then owned and operated Woody's Bar-B-Que in Elizabethton for 15 years.

    He was preceded in death by his father, Dock R. Crowder. He is survived by his mother, Grace Proffitt Crowder, of Bluff City, his sister, Jane Crowder Fillers (Jim), of Johnson City, a special niece, Marie Fillers Johnson (Earl), of Johnson City, and a special friend, Howard Stout, of Mountain City.

    Woody was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and owning hunting beagles. He was an active member of the Doe Valley Sportsman Club, the National Hunting Beagle Association and multiple other hunting clubs. He was recently inducted into the National Beagle Association Hall of Fame.

    A service to honor the life of Woody Crowder will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Minister Tim Hall, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Wednesday.

    The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, September 12, 2019 in the Garden of Devotion at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Art Smithdeal, Roby Phillipi, Jack Stout, Terry Reynolds, Frank Bass, Jeff Stacy, Jim Fillers and Earl Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be all members of the Doe Valley Sportsman Club, Smyth County CHC and Beagles, Creston Beagle Club, and Class of 1968 EHS.
