    ALEXANDER RICHARDS
    COMPANY C, 59TH TENNESSEE MOUNTED INFANTRY

    Alexander Richards was born in Sullivan County, TN on March 18, 1837 (1835 based on pension application) to Benjamin Alexander III and Nancy Glover Richards. The United States Federal Census of 1850 shows he is living in Division 1 of Sullivan County with his parents and five siblings. In 1860, he has married and is living in Division 1 of Carter County with his wife, Martha E. Perry Richards and their two children, Henderson (2) and Washington (9 months). Their marriage was in Carter County on December 16, 1856. In 1880, he and Martha are living in District 16 of Sullivan County with children: William (18), James (15), Alford (14), Harriet (11), Jones H. (9), Jinnie (7), Samuel (4) and Andrew (1). In 1900, he is still in District 16 of Sullivan County with Martha and children, Samuel (22), Andrew (20) and Daniel (15). In 1910 he is now 73 years old and Martha 72, and living in Bluff City with children Sam and Lillie.

    Alexander and his brother Benjamin, enlisted in Company C of the 59th Tennessee Mounted Infantry in Elizabethton on December 23, 1861, the date of the formation of the company with Captain James Brooks as the commanding officer. Alexander's service was cut short due to a service disability. He was discharged in Morristown, TN on April 24, 1862 by Certificate of Disability for Discharge, signed by Captain James Brooks. On August 7, 1902, Alexander filed for a Tennessee Confederate pension (S4406) in Sullivan County, TN. He cited fistula as an ailment he contracted while in service. Signing his application as witnesses were Lt. J.R. Kuhn, a former officer in Company C, and D.N. Giles of Company C. One letter in his file dated April 10, 1903 is from Dr. H.T. Masengill of Bluff City citing, "Alexander Richards' condition equals that produced by the loss of a limb having this day made careful physical examination." Another letter, dated May 30, 1903 and in his file, was submitted by William Perry, who served in Company C with Alexander. In the letter, William Perry stated he knew of the service of Alexander and is aware of his disability. William Perry was also a brother of Alexander's wife. One deposition, dated December 15, 1903, was from Bristol attorney B.G. McDowell. He is recorded as being 5' 2" tall, dark complexion, black eyes and dark hair. His pension was awarded.

    Alexander passed away on January 17, 1916 and might be interred in the Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church Cemetery beside his wife, Martha. There is an unmarked grave beside of Martha which might be his.

    SAMUEL J. RICHARDS
    Samuel J. Richards, age 65, a life-long resident of Chinquepin Grove, Bluff City, passed away shortly after 9:00 Saturday evening at the St. Elizabeth hospital. An illness of about 4 weeks preceeded[sic] his death.
    Mr. Richards, or "Sam" as he was affectionately called by all who knew him, was born June 26, 1876. He was the 8th child of a family of eight boys and two girls, children of Alex and Martha Richards, who had settled in that locality a few years previous.
    On April 5, 1910, he was married to Miss Lillie Bell Lyons, and of this union there were born a daughter and two sons who survive him. Mrs. Richards having preceeded[sic] her husband in death by almost four years. The surviving children are Mrs. Claude Glover of Elizabethton, Henry and Frank Richard, of Chinquepin Grove.
    Mr. Richards is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Dan J. Richards of Elizabethton, Keen Richard, Mrs. H. N. Stump and Mrs. David Stanfield, residing in the Chinquepin Grove area.
    The funeral was held Monday at the Chinquepin Grove Baptist church with burial in the nearby cemetery. Services were in charge of Rev. George Westmoreland. Previous to the service the body lay in state at the family home adjacent to the church.

    BLUFF CITY - Dorothy O'Dell of Bluff City, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 26, 2019 from the Courtyards Assisted Living in Johnson City.

    Dorothy was born in the Chinquapin Community to the late Eddie L. and Millie Smith Richards. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl O'Dell; two sisters, Ruby Carrier and Rhoda "Bea" Lowe; and one niece, Judy Scoggins.

    Dorothy was a dedicated homemaker, mother and wife. She was a member of Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church and also attended Bluff City First Christian Church. She loved to travel with her husband and family and loved going to the beach. She enjoyed her special friends in her Sunday School Class at Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church and gardening, cooking and watching her favorite sports teams – the Atlanta Braves and the Tennessee Lady Vols.

    Those left to cherish her memories include two sons, Barry Kent O'Dell and Rodney Eric O'Dell; one daughter, Jill Fair and husband Roger; one very special grandchild, Skylar Fair; and several nieces and nephews.

    A service to celebrate the life of Dorothy O'Dell will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 30, 2019 in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Bluff City with Pastor Rusty Verran, Mr. Wade Lockner, Mr. David Hurd, and Pastor Jonathan Feathers, officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday.

    The graveside service will follow in the Poplar Ridge Christian Church Cemetery in Piney Flats, Tennessee. Active pallbearers will be Jared Rhinehardt, Ray Boling, Danny Buchanan, Tony Carrier, Jerry Gregg, Roger Fair and Skylar Fair. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Rhinehardt, Jerry Rhinehardt, Thomas Lowe, Ronnie Luster, Jerry Carrier, Cagle Lowe, Bill Morrell and Gary Morrell and her many friends and family.

    Dorothy married Edward Earl O'Dell on 10 May 1945 in Sullivan County, , , Tennessee. Edward (son of George Andrew O'Dell and Stella T. Woods) was born on 30 Jan 1920 in Sullivan County, , , Tennessee; died on 8 Nov 2010 in Sullivan County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Poplar Ridge Cemetery, , Sullivan County, Tennessee.
