    Montie Elmer Chesser, 70, Rt 2, died Friday in Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness. A native of Carter County he was the son of Henry and Lydia Lyons Chesser. Mr. Chesser was a member of Lyons Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He was a carpenter, a farmer, and lumberman.

    He was preceded in death by one daughter, one son, and four brothers.

    Survivors include his wife Mrs. Mae Sheets Chesser, three sons, Roger Harold Chesser, Montie D. Chesser and Montie Earl Chesser, all of Johnson City. Four daughters, Mrs Eunice Hicks, Mrs. Peggy Hicks, and Mrs. Mary Butler all of Jonesboro and Mrs. Louise Blevins; one sister Mrs. Alice Whitson of Johnson City; 21 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

    Montie married Verna Mae Sheets about 1933 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Verna (daughter of Benjamin H.     On April 24th, 2022, Georgie M. Potter Morley passed away peacefully after a life filled with adventure, strength, and love. She traveled throughout the US while her husband Wayne served our country, and now they have reunited in heaven.
    She was exceedingly generous to everyone; caring for others appeared to come naturally. She was always authentic, genuine, and honest. If you knew her, you were likely touched by her generosity.
    She is survived by her two children, four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
    She is being honored at a private graveside service at the VA Mountain Home on Monday, May 2nd, 2022.

    ELIZABETHTON - Hazel Chesser Collins Johnson, 83, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2017 at her residence after an brief illness. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Fred T. & Ethel M. Lowe Chesser. Mrs. Johnson retired from the Kitchen staff at Milligan College. She was of the Free Will Baptist Faith. She loved her family, cooking and canning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands: Clifton Collins and Harold Johnson, a daughter: Nancy Collins, Three sons: Rusty, Randy and Freddie Collins an infant son, an infant daughter, three brothers: Clyde, Allen & Harrison Chesser and a sister: Linda Faye Chesser.

    Survivors include Three Daughters: Joan Garland, Joyce Miller & husband Sonny all of Elizabethton and Judy Bowling & husband Dean, Hampton. A Step-Son: Keith Johnson, Roan Mountain. Six Grandchildren: Jason Collins, Cynthia Bowling, Daniel Bowling, Joey Miller, Brandon Garland and Lucas Garland. Five Great Grandchildren: Curtiss Carden, Haley Carden, Kaleb Miller, Paige Collins and Daniel Bowling. Two Brothers: Ray Chesser and wife Charlotte, and Norman Chesser and wife Connie. Several nieces & nephews.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 2017 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Danny Blevins and Rev. Dexter Brumit officiating. Interment will follow in the Lyons Cemetery. Music will be provided by Dexter & Phyllis Brumit. Active Pallbearers will be: Dean Bowling, Sonny Miller, Ricky Miller, Daniel Bowling, Joey Miller, Jason Collins, Brandon Garland and Lucas Garland. Honorary pallbearers will be: Family and friends.

    ELIZABETHTON - Wanda Louise Chesser Blevins, 86, Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2021 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born April 21, 1935 in Johnson City to the late Monte & Mae Sheets Chesser. She was a homemaker. She loved to sew, quilt and work with crafts. Mrs. Blevins was a member of First Baptist Church but attended Valley Forge United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Blevins who passed away July 19, 2008, by two brothers: Alfred & Harold Chesser and a sister, Mary Benfield.

    Survivors include her sons & daughters-in-law: Carter & Terri Blevins and C.J. & Leslie Blevins all of Elizabethton. A daughter: Christine Hardin, Johnson City. Four Grandchildren: Sarah Putland & husband Steve, Abigail Blevins, Brock Morell and Tatum Morell. Her Sisters: Eunice Hicks and Peggy Hicks both of Jonesborough, a brother: MD Chesser, Elizabethton. Her special friends: Shirley Fender, Dorothy Little, Hester Layne, Barbara Anthony and Ruth Barnett.

    Graveside Service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2021 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Richard Blevins officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

    ELIZABETHTON - Montie "Earl" Chesser, age 59, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at his beloved home. He was born in Carter County, Tennessee.

    Earl enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 18, and devoted 4 years to serving our country. After retirement from the armed forces, Earl returned to Carter County to pursue his career, and natural talent as a Diesel Mechanic. Earl was a 'Good Ol' Country Boy" in every sense of the term. It didn't matter if Earl was fishing, shooting guns, or driving around enjoying the natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, he was always enjoying life's simplest pleasures.

    He is survived by his only child who was his pride and joy, Amanda Thrift also known as Brute or Bae throughout her childhood years; his former spouse, Cindy Chesser; five brothers, M.D. Chesser, Robert Benfield, Dale Benfield, Alan Benfield, and Danny Ray Benfield; six sisters, Peggy Hicks, Unise Hicks, Louse Blevins, Connie Henry, Willma Benfield, and Mary Sparks, who all reside in East Tennessee.

    Earl will continue to be loved and forever missed by his family, friends, and beloved cat, Noodles.

    A Committal Service and Inurnment will be held at 1:45PM Friday, April 12, 2019 at Mountain Home National Cemetery with military honors to be rendered by the Boone Dam VFW Post #4933.

    JOHNSON CITY - Mike A. Potter, 73, Johnson City passed away Monday, October 31, 2022 after a brief illness in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of the late Jesse Reed Potter and Florence Bell Potter. Mike was a faithful member of McKinley Memorial Bible Church. He loved his Pastor and church family. Mike was a U.S. Marine veteran having served his country in Vietnam. He was a racing legend, having raced locally and making 60 NASCAR Cup Series starts. Mike also made many starts in the Late Model Sportsman Series and 21 starts in the Xfinity Series. He raced from 1968 until 2021. Mike had several business ventures including owning Surplus Brokers in Johnson City.

    Survivors include his brother, Gary L. Potter and his wife, Linda and their daughter, Charlene Morton and husband, Steven all of Johnson City; his special friends, Pastor Lennie Smith, Debbie Fitzgerald, church family and all of his racing friends.

    Funeral services for Mike will be conducted at 1:00 PM Friday, November 4, 2022 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Pastor Lennie Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until the service hour. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 3:00 PM in the Bell Cemetery, Limestone Cove Road, Unicoi, TN. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

    Nancy was a 1978 graduate of Happy Valley High School. She was employed as a beautician for several years. She loved spending time with her family. She was a Free Will Baptist.

    Nancy was preceded in death by her father Clifton Collins in 1973 by three brothers: Rusty Collins, Freddie Collins and Randy Chesser, her step-father: Harold Johnson and an infant brother and sister, Joe & Linda Sue.

    Survivors include her mother: Hazel Collins Johnson. Three Sisters & Brothers-In-Law: Judy and Dean Bowling, Hampton, Joan and David Garland and Joyce and Sonny Miller all of Elizabethton. A Step-Brother: Keith Johnson, Roan Mountain. Her Nieces & Nephews: Jason, Cynthia, Daniel, Joey, Brandon and Locus, Her special great nieces & nephews: Curtis, Haley, Caleb and Page.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Danny Blevins officiating. Friends may also call at the residence.

    The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. It was her wish to be cremated and private graveside service at a later date

    Mark Allen Chesser, 58, died peacefully Saturday, September 17, 2022, at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., January 3, 1964, to the late Dewey Allen Chesser and Minnie Katharine Baird.
    He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Ann Shell Chesser; daughter, Courtney Chesser and her partner Matt Palmer; special grandchildren, Lincoln Mitchell and Lennox Mathew; son, Mark Allen Chesser II, and two special foster sons, Sean Burd and Chandler Lewis; daughters, Ashley Palmer and Jenny Glynn; sisters, Anita Fenner and Christy Thomas; lifelong best friend and brother, Sonny Miller; fur babies, Ellie and Tater; and many close cherished family members near and far.
    Mark enjoyed spending time with family, eating home cooked meals, and talking to many friends in the garage listening to music, especially the Grateful Dead. He was very proud of all his children. He loved his grandsons and enjoyed them coming over to visit with Papaw. Any stray animal in the neighborhood would make its way to Mark’s ark and he would feed it and nurse it back to health and keep it. Mark cherished all the memories and good times with his family and friends. We reminisced often of past days, simpler times and when people were good to each other. Thoughts of family gathering together on Sundays and spending the afternoon eating, talking and watching kids play.
    Mark is to be cremated with no formal services.
