William Avery Bowers, age 85, a well known resident of Elizabethton, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. L. McQueen, 207 Academy street at 10:30 p.m. Thursday after an illness of several months.
Funeral services will be conducted from the First Christian church, of which he was a member, Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with the Rev. Shepherd in charge, assisted by Rev. John Williams, of Johnson City, and Rev. J. J. Musick. Luther Hampton will have charge of the music. Burial will be in the Bowers cemetery at Siam.
Survivors are two sons: Robert L. Bowers, Bristol, Va., and John Bowers, Elizabethton; three daughters, Mrs. D. L. McQueen, Mrs. J. C. Bradley and Mrs. William Nidiffer, all of Elizabethton; three brothers, John L. Bowers, Elizabethton, Rev. D. B. Bowers, Johnson City, and Roy Bowers, Fredericksburg, Va.; four sisters, Mrs. Austin Kyte, Kingsport, Mrs. Rhoda VanHuss, Bloomington, Ill., Mrs. Kale Carriger and Mrs. Roscoe Morley, both of Elizabethton; also several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mr. Bowers was united in marriage with Sarah Fine Williams on May 18, 1875. He was preceded in death by his wife 16 years ago. Mr. Bowers was the son of Rev. John L. and Polly Cannon Bowers, one of 25 children.

JOE R. [sic] BOWERS DIES IN FLA.
Joe R.[sic] Bowers, 60, prominent native of Carter County and well known in East Tennessee, died Saturday night at St. Petersburg, Florida, following a year's illness.
The body will arrive in Elizabethton, Tuesday evening and be taken to the Roy Hathaway Funeral Home until time for the funeral services Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at the First Christian Church. The Rev. A. Preston Gray, pastor of the Kingsport Christian Church, assisted by Rev. J. J. Musick will be in charge of the service. Interment will be in the Fletcher Cemetery. Music will be under the direction of Luther Hampton.
Mr. Bowers was born in Siam, the son of the late Rev. John L. Bowers. For a number of years he taught school at Hampton, after which he was employed by the ET&WNC Railway Co. He was associated for a number of years with the First National Bank of Elizabethton, and also assisted in organizing the Holston National Bank here in 1920 where he served as cashier. For the past five or six years he had been in the real estate business in Florida.
The deceased was married twice, first to Miss Lela Fletcher who died several years ago, and later to Miss Josie Fletcher who survives him.
Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Carsie Reynolds of Avondale, Pa., Mrs. Inez Smith of Westchester, Pa.; three sons, Connelly Bowers of Harrisburg, Pa., Carmen Bowers of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Joe P. C. F. Bowers died Friday at the age of 52, after a brief illness leaving a widow, Mrs. Cora Bowers and three sons, William, Paul and Harry Bowers. Deceased came of an old and well known family of Carter County being a son of the late Rev. John L. Bowers a noted and well beloved minister in the Baptist church. Fred Bowers was above the average in intelligence and had a most pleasing personality and had been a very successful solicitor of insurance and salesman in other lines of business in which his talent for salesmanship was fully demonstrated.
His funeral took place at the Christian Church on Sunday in the presence of large and sympathetic audience in charge of Rev. R. M. Owen, pastor of the Baptist church here and Judge W. R. Allen, a lifelong friend with appropriate and impressive services.
The pallbearers were Maj. C. R. Hathaway, John Campbell, W. L. Hampton, Dave McQueen, M. L. Carriger, G. C. Carriger, Carriger Bradley and William Tillie.
Interment was in the Bowers Cemetery at Siam.

S. F. BOWERS, 49, DIES SUDDENLY
S. F. Bowers, 49, mail carrier for 24 years and president of the F Tennessee Mail Carriers association, died suddenly from a heart attack yesterday afternoon. He was a rural carrier on route one out of Elizabethton at the time of his death.
The body was discovered in woods about six o'clock last night by a boy, Stanley Heston, who had been out in the fields training his bird dog. The thicket was near Holsclaw's farm on the Siam-to Valley Forge road.
Mr. Bowers had finished delivering mail for the day and was returning home. He parked his car on the main highway and supposedly had gone through his own cornfield, crossed the old highway into the woods, apparently investigating the right-of-way for another road. His body was found about one-half mile from his automobile. He lived in Siam.
Death was due to apoplexy, according to the coroner jury's verdict, acting upon the testimony of Dr. John Cottrell.
Mr. Bowers had been in ill health. Early yesterday morning he had complained of not feeling well, but seemed to have been better at noon. Death came as a surprise to his many friends as he was well known, not only in Elizabethton and Carter county, but through out east Tennessee.
He belonged to the Siam Baptist church for at least thirty years, had held several church offices and had been active all of his life in church affairs. He was a Mason and a member of the Jr. O.U.A.M., council no. 1, Elizabethton.
Funeral services will probably be held tomorrow, but definite arrangements have not been made pending word from relatives living in other states. Burial will be in the Bowers Cemetery, Siam.
Survivors are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Edith Hardin and Miss Gladys Bowers, both of Siam; one son, Crawford, Siam; his mother, Mrs. D. S. Nave, Siam; three brothers, the Rev. D. B. Bowers of Chattanooga, Prof. Roy B. Bowers, Bristol, Va., and John L. Bowers, Elizabethton; one sister, Mrs. Kate Morely, Siam; two half-brothers, Avery Bowers of Elizabethton, and J. P. The funeral of S. F. Bowers, 49, well known mail carrier, who was found dead Wednesday evening near his home at Siam where he had died from a sudden attack of apoplexy, was held this afternoon at two o'clock at the Siam Baptist church.
The Rev. John W. Crowe was in charge of the services, assisted by J. R. Allen and the Rev. C. L. Bowden.
Burial was made at the Bowers cemetery at Siam. The Masonic lodge had charge of the final rites at the grave.

John A. Bowers, age 66, constable of Carter County and life-long resident, passed away suddenly last night, apparently suffering a heart attack, at the South Side Christian Church where he was attending services.
He lived with his wife on route 1, whom he married 39 years ago. Mr. Bowers had been in ill health for the past year and has had several light heart attacks. He was a member of the Carter Christian Church.
Surviving him besides his wife Bessie, are two daughters, Mrs. T. F. Wagner of Norton, Va., and Mrs. Dewey Bradshaw of 520 Siam Road; two sons, Harmon and T. C. Bowers of the city; three sisters, Mrs. J. C. Bradley of Bastrop, Texas, Mrs. Caroline Nidiffer of route 2, Mrs. Kate McQueen of 207 Academy; and one brother, Bob Bowers of Bristol.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at the South Side Christian Church at two o'clock with the Rev. Grant H. Laws, pastor of the church, in charge, assisted by the Rev. Johnny Hall. Burial will be made in the DeLoach Cemetery.

ELIZABETHTON — Mr. John L. Bowers, Jr., 86, of Elizabethton, passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2010, at his residence.

He was the son of the late John L. Bowers Sr. and Winnie E. Morley Bowers and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Yvonne Bowers, on September 16, 2007; two sons, Richard Morley Bowers, August 14, 1952, Alan Nelson Bowers, August 2, 1962; a brother, Ralph Bowers Sr.; and three sisters, Virginia B. Bowers, Nelle B. Lubs and Christine Berniece Oglesby.

Mr. Bowers was educated in the public school system of Elizabethton and was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, where he was the President of the Student Body and Recipient of the Medal of Honor. He received the first diploma awarded from the "new" Elizabethton High School (presently T.A. Dugger Junior High).

He received a B.A. Degree (Cum Laude) from Vanderbilt University, where his undergraduate major was Business Administration, and he had a double minor in History and Political Science. He received his Doctorate of Jurisprudence Degree from Vanderbilt University School of Law. During his undergraduate and post-graduate time there, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Order of the COIF (highest legal scholastic society) and the Case Editor for the Vanderbilt Law Review.

He received his license to practice law on November 3, 1951, from the Supreme Court of Tennessee. He was the senior partner of the Elizabethton Law Firm of Allen, Nelson and Bowers, where for nearly eighteen years, he practiced with the late Judge Roy C. Nelson. For 8½ years, from 1969-1977, he served as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, which embraces 41 of Tennessee's 95 counties. He held this position under three United States Presidents. He was past president of the Carter County Bar Association and served as President of the Junior Section of the Bar Association of Tennessee.

Mr. Bowers served the City of Elizabethton as Mayor for two terms. He was a former Jaycees' Outstanding Young Man of the Year in Carter County; a past President of the Elizabethton Rotary Club with a 59 year record of perfect attendance; past President of the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce; a member of the Dashiell Masonic Lodge # 238 F. and AM; member Kingsport Court #183 Royal Order of Jesters; past President of the Elizabethton Shrine Club; past Commander of American Legion Post #49; past Exalted Ruler of the Elizabethton B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1847; past Director of the Watauga Historical Association; and former Vice-President of the Tennessee Area Council of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

Mr. Bowers was a former member of the Board of Trustees of Carson-Newman College; was a former member of and Secretary to the Board of Directors of Citizens Bank; was a founding member of the Board of Directors and became Director Emeritus of Shepherd's Inn on January 1, 2002. He was extremely active in Gideons International and joined the Elizabethton Chapter shortly after it was established in 1976.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon Emeritus since 2008 and was a member of the Foursquare Sunday School Class. Mr. Bowers was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Bowers was a prominent and outstanding member of the community who will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by a daughter, Dr. Bege K. Bowers, Youngstown, OH; two sons and daughters-in-law, John L. Bowers III and his wife, Patricia Dove Bowers, and Gregory H. Bowers and his wife, Julie Harrill Bowers, all of Elizabethton; three granddaughters, Katie Bowers Harmon, Tallahassee, FL, Elizabeth Dove, Elizabethton, Kristy Glover, Kingsport; three grandsons, Jonathan A. The funeral service for Mr. Bowers will be conducted on Sunday, September 26, 2010, at 3:30 PM in the First Baptist Church, Elizabethton, with Dr. Jim Royston and Rev. Bob Polk officiating. Music will be under the direction of Rev. Tim Smith.

The family will receive friends in the church from 1:30-3:30 PM on Sunday prior to the service and at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Julie Bowers, at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Monday, September 27, 2010, at 10:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Jonathan A. Bowers and the Deacons of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. William Hunter Bowers, age 43, a well-known resident of Elizabethton died suddenly Tuesday 12:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted from the First Free Will Baptist church Thursday afternoon at 5:00 o'clock with the Rev. William Cleary and Rev. Houston Blevins in charge. Interment will be in the Colbaugh cemetery.

Lena Bowers Peters, 86, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Lena was born in Carter County to the late Emmert Caleb Bowers and Rowena Bell Brown Bowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bynum Peters; 15 brothers and sisters; and a great-grandson, Caden Bradshaw.
Lena was the sweetest, most kind, gentle and forgiving hearted, tender and compassionate woman. She retired from Texas Instruments as a quality control technician and then worked seven additional years at Big Lots of Elizabethton. She was a member of Roan Street Church of God and enjoyed decorating, flowers, gardening and associating with friends and spending time with her family.
Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Vickie Pearce of Elizabethton; a grandson, Brian Bradshaw and wife Becky of Elizabethton; two great-grandsons, Colton Bradshaw and Collin Bradshaw, both of Elizabethton; and a special nephew, Donald Bowers of Erwin.

ELIZABETHTON — Rev. Horace C. Bowers, 75, of 287 Old Lacy Hollow Road, Elizabethton, went home to heaven be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 18, 2010, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital, Mountain Home, TN, following an extended illness.

He was the son of the late Emmitt and Rowena Brown Bowers and was a native of Carter County in the Hampton community. Mr. Bowers was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a carpenter, minister, former employee of Great Lakes Research, served as an associate pastor for eleven years at Hunter First Baptist Church and was a member of the Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by six brothers and nine sisters.

Rev. Bowers is survived by his wife of 51 years, Violet Carrier Bowers, of the home; one son, Jonathan Horace Bowers, of Knoxville, TN; one daughter and son-in-law, Rowean and Kenneth Dunn, of Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Daniel Dunn and wife, Teresa, of Johnson City, David Dunn and wife, Jessica, and Dianna Dunn, all of Elizabethton; five great grandchildren, Chaz Deakins, Alyssa Dunn, Zachariah Dunn, John Ethan Deakin, all of Elizabethton, and Caleb Rosenbalm, of Johnson City; a soon to be born great granddaughter, Karleigh Grace Dunn; a sister, Lena Peters, of Elizabethton; and a beloved dog, little bit. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Rev. Bowers will be conducted on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at 8:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton, with Rev. Daniel Dunn, Rev. Dale Greenwell and Rev. Jerry Lyons officiating.

The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6:00 PM-8:00 PM on Wednesday prior to the service.

Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:45 PM to go in procession to the cemetery.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 PM Thursday, October 21, 2010, at Emmert Cemetery in Elizabethton. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post No. 49. Mr. Pearce was a native of Elizabethton and had lived most of his life in Hampton. He was a son of the late Joseph P. and Mary Brumitt Pearce and was also preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Johnson Pearce, in 1970, a son, Richard "Ricky" Pearce, in 1974, and a granddaughter, Harriett Denise Shepard.
Mr. Pearce was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Elizabethton Senior Citizens and a member of Hampton First Baptist Church.

Charles Edward Bowers Sr., 93, of Elizabethton, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at his residence, following an extended illness. Charles was a native of Carter County and a son of the late William and Gertrude Cooke Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Flora Mae Mayse Bowers; one sister, Lois Bowers Russell; and a step-brother, Raymond Rosenbalm. Mr. Bowers retired from North American Rayon Corporation and was of the Free Will Baptist faith. He was a United States Army veteran, where he served in World War II. He was in the Wolf Hound Infantry in Pearl Harbor. He was a member of the DAV, the American Legion Post 49, the VFW Post 2166 and the Carter County Honor Guard. Survivors include two daughters, Cora Greenwell and husband Jimmy and Betty Crum and husband Ray, all of Elizabethton; one son, Charles Bowers Jr.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fred Bowers and Deacon Bowers and wife Carol, all of Elizabethton; one sister, Bernice Davis and husband Glen, Elizabethton; numerous nieces and nephews; and two special companions, his dogs, "Little Boy" and "Oscar." A service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Charles Edward Bowers Sr. will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday, July 24, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Jerry Davis and Rev. Hobart Bradshaw officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, prior to the service, or at the residence of a daughter, Cora Greenwell, 104 Russell Hill Road, Elizabethton, at anytime. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. GRAY — Martha "Ann" Butner, 77, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 5, 2016. She departed this life from the Life Care Center of Gray.
Mrs. Butner was born July 16, 1939 in the Siam community of Carter County, Tenn., a daughter of the late Earnest and Gladys Bowers Meredith. She had lived in the Gray area for around 40 years.
Martha Ann Butner was a member of Crossroads Christian Church and the Bereans Sunday School Class in Gray. She was also a member of the Johnson City Community Center and a former member of Elizabethton First Christian Church.
Martha graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1957. She married Richard Butner on June 13, 1970 and was a homemaker who lovingly cared for her family.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by sister, Shirley Jane Meredith, and brother, J. Meredith.
Those left to cherish her memory are husband, Richard Butner; daughter, Rachel Renee Butner Golden and husband, Mike; niece, Sara Bowers; and nephews, David Meridith and Robin Meridith.
The family received friends on Monday, August 8, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Crossroads Christian Church in Gray. A Celebration of Life immediately followed with Pastor Clint Andrews officiating.
