    Charles Henry O'Dell, 74, Route 5, BristoL, Tenn., died Thursday, Nov. 24, 1988, in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn. He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was held as a P. O. W. He was a retired electrician, having worked at the Monroe Company and Easley Heating Service. He was a member of the Central Holston Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Virginia O'Dell; one daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Flynn) O'Neal, Bristol Tennessee; one son, Dr. Charles S. O'Dell, Chevy Chase, Md.; one brother, Claude O'Dell, Bristol Tennessee; two sisters, Sarah Bertha O'Dell, Bluff City, and Nancy Lee Kincheloe, Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews

    Funeral services for Charles Henry O'Dell will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Central Holston Christian Church with Sid Tiller and Dr. Roy Searem officiating. Burial will follow in Shipley Cemetery. Military graveside honors will be conducted by VFW Patton Crosswhite Post 6975. Pallbearers will be Finley Witcher, Isaac O'Dell, George Webb O'Dell, Carl Kincheloe, Carl Kesley. Dr. Don Branson, William O'Dell and Charles Shipley. Honorary pallbearers will be Samuel Witcher, Johnny O'Dell, William Kincheloe, J. D. Morrell, Faye Morrell, Charles Shipley, Walter Kelsey, Ernest Morrell, Woodrow Morrell and Bobbie O'Dell.

    KINGSPORT - Our patriarch, Charles Stanley O'Dell, of Kingsport, Tennessee, passed away May 29, 2019.

    Born September 13, 1947 in Bristol, Virginia, he was the son of the late Virginia Frances Edens and Charles Henry O'Dell. He completed his B.S. degree in chemistry at King College before joining the U.S. Navy, where he served as a medical corpsman at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, during the Vietnam War. He then received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from American University in Washington, DC, where he relished cycling expeditions up to 100 miles for exercise and relaxation. He traveled throughout Europe during his post-doctoral studies in England, where he became a lifelong fan of Premier League soccer and the Newcastle United Magpies.

    Following his distinguished career at the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, DC, where his work included addressing safety issues related to nuclear waste storage, he retired to Kingsport. He fulfilled his dream of living on Patrick Henry Lake and enjoying his favorite pursuits of golf, fishing, and a passion for watching sports, especially his Magpies.

    A devoted, loving and cherished companion and surrogate father and grandfather, he is survived by long-time life partner Jane Tyler Cushman, her son Jason Castagna (Samantha) and grandsons Cole Castagna and Dane Castagna of Carlsbad, California; his sister, Lynn O'Neal (Dennis) of Bristol, TN, with whom he was extraordinarily close; his niece Sherri Lynn Brown (Shaun) and his adored great niece, Adalyn Brown, of Buffalo, NY; numerous cousins; and a multitude of friends.

    Ever the scientist, Dr. O'Dell donated his body to medical science.

    A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2019, at his family's church, Central Holston Christian Church, 261 Sandbar Road, Bristol, TN. A memorial service and inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date.
