    Cora Bernice Payne, age 90, of Mountain City, TN, died July 10, 2015 at her home. She was born on July 3, 1925 in Johnson County, TN. She worked as a cook at various places including Burlington Industries, Johnson County Hospital, Boone Trail Dairy Bar, Mountain City Bus Station and others for many years. She enjoyed reading the Bible, quilting, gardening and canning, and making apple butter. Bernice attended Hammons Chapel Christian Church for many years and later became a member of Appalachian Church of Christ.

    In addition to her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Payne, and an infant brother, Dexter Hammons.

    She is survived by her children: JoAnn Atwood and husband Blake, Betty Vaught and husband Ray, Bill Payne and wife Francis, Jerry Payne and Tom Payne; brothers: Elmer Hammons, Paul Hammons and wife Thelma; sister, Viola Joines; grandchildren: Tanya Huyard, April Shelton, Michelle Michael, Shannon Payne, Sandra Herron and Brian Vaught: step-grandchildren Rebecca Simcox, Jamie Pennington, great grandchildren: Shea Huyard, Ashtyn Henson, Kal'el Michaels Kevin Shelton, Jacob Vaught and Gunner Herron; step great-grandchildren, Savannah Simcox, Shiloh Simcox, Dawson Pennington, Bella Pennington, special friends, Pearl Jones, Faye Hall, Wanda Payne, several nieces and nephews.

    Graveside service and interment at the Dunn Memorial Cemetery with Joshua Giddings and Buddy Morefield officiating.

    Notes:

    Thomas Elmer Hammons, age 91, Mountain City, Tennessee, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, November 9, 2019, at The Waters of Roan Highlands in Roan Mountain, TN. Elmer was born on March 4, 1928 in Shouns, TN to the late Andy W. Hammons and Lora Callie Simcox Hammons. Elmer was raised by his Dad and step mother, Lela Arnold Hammons after his mother passed away. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Dexter Hammons, brother Paul Hammons; one sister, Bernice Payne.

    Those left to cherish his memories include two daughters, Mary Sue (Susie) Henson and husband Larry and Sandy Hammons and husband Norman; Polly Coldiron Hammons, the mother of his two daughters and the great love of his life; sister, Viola Joines; sister in law, Thelma Hammons; several nieces and nephews and many, many special friends.

    Elmer was a proud United States Army Veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Hammons Chapel Christian Church.

    Elmer's life work was a carpenter by trade and a licensed contractor. He built many homes in Johnson County and the surrounding area.

    He was an outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and watch wildlife. He enjoyed beekeeping too. Elmer was a simple man with little needs, but loved his family and was very loved by his family. It was mostly apparent with the good care he received in the past years. A special caregiver, Monika Burgess, "Monroe" to Elmer, because he couldn't say Monika became an adopted family member.

    The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at the Hammons Chapel Christian Church. Funeral service will follow at 3:00 with Minister Joshua Giddings officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Hammons Family Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Charlie Hawkins, Charlie Thompson, Mike Shupe, Paul Stephan, Tom Payne and Douglas Hammons. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Gerry Bocarossa, Barton Hall, Walter Simcox and the men of Hammons Chapel Church. Military honors to be accorded by Johnson County Honor Guard.

    Selmer Paul Hammons, age 89, of Forge Creek Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, went to his heavenly home on Monday, April 15, 2019, peacefully at his home. He was born on November 21, 1929 in Mountain City, TN to the late Andy W. and Lora Callie Simcox Hammons. In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by an infant brother, Dexter Hammons; one sister, Bernice Payne. He was raised by his grandparents, Emerson and Cora Simcox from the age of 7 months, after his mother passed away.

    He was a member of Hammons Chapel Christian church, where he served as Deacon and Elder for many years.

    Paul worked many years as a carpenter and brick mason. He enjoyed reading the Bible, gardening and farming. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and loved helping them anytime he could.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 68 years, Thelma Mast Hammons; one son, Doug Hammons and wife Michaeline; one daughter, Linda Thompson and husband Charlie; grandsons, Brandon Thompson and wife Amy and Lance Hammons and Sandra; granddaughter, who adored him, Mandy Hawkins and husband Charlie; five great grandchildren, Scottie, Gracie, Izzy, Macey and Michael; brother, Elmer Hammons; sister, Viola Joines; several nieces and nephews and many special friends.

    The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at the Mountain City Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 with Minister Joshua Giddings officiating. Eulogy will be given by Bob Heck. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Hammons Family Cemetery, located behind their home. Pallbearers will be Scottie Tester, Brandon Thompson, Lance Hammons, Charlie Hawkins, Charlie Thompson and Larry Henson. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Hammons Chapel Christian Church.
