Juanita Johnson Buchanan, age 79, of Squirrel Creek, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 11, 2013 at the home of a daughter. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late David A. and Etta Grindstaff Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, the late Clyde H. Buchanan and the late Paul H. Buchanan; sisters: Judy Buchanan and Mary Haney and three infant sisters; seven brothers: James, Silas, Jesse, Earl, Ted, Paul and Boyd Johnson. Juanita was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church who loved gardening and canning, but mostly her family.

Surviving are three daughters: Shirley McIntosh and husband, Boots, of Newland, Nadine White of Linville Falls and Rose Mary Daniels and husband, Stanley, of Newland; son, Duane Buchanan and wife, Laura, of Pickens, SC; two brothers: Bob Johnson of Hendersonville and Henry Johnson and wife, Jo Ann of Enka-Candler; six grandchildren: Chris McIntosh and wife, Laura, Shannon Fannon and husband, Stacy, Heath Brookshire and wife, Melissa, Travis Daniels and wife, Dorothy, Mitchell Buchanan and Logan Buchanan; ten great-grandchildren: Levi and Hannah McIntosh, Jacob and Caleb Fannon, McKenzie, MeKaylah and Adriana Brookshire, Rylie Daniels, and Makenna and Alexia Buchanan. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, at Johnson Chapel Church. Rev. Tim Duncan will officiate. Burial will follow in the Ashley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. on Wednesday prior to the services at the church. Pallbearers will be: Chris McIntosh, Heath Brookshire, Travis Daniels, Jacob Fannon, Caleb Fannon and Levi McIntosh. Honorary pallbearers will be: Mitchell and Logan Buchanan.

JOHNSON CITY - Nellie Meril Boone, 98, Johnson City, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 30, 2023, at NHC Healthcare.

Nellie was born in Avery County, NC to the late Edward Logan and Rinda Johnson Hoilman.

Nellie was a devoted homemaker. She enjoyed working in the garden and the wood pile to keep her wood burning stove running. She was a loving mother and beloved “Granny Boone”. Jigsaw puzzles and fishing kept her busy and, when she was younger, she enjoyed quilting with her mother. Several of her quilts can be found on her kids’ and grandkids’ beds. Nellie was a long-time member of Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ.

In addition to her parents, Nellie was preceded in death by: her husband, Charlie Arbie Boone; son, Tommy Wayne Boone; daughter-in-law, Wanda Jeanette Boone; and brothers, Cecil and Coy Hoilman.

Survivors include: two daughters, Clara Davis and her husband Tom and Shirley Britt and her husband Eddie; son, Freddie Boone; eight grandchildren, Scott Davis and his wife Pam, James Britt and his wife Lane, Steven Davis and his wife Svette, Tommy Boone and his wife Lisa, Johnathan Boone and his wife Deena, Michael Boone, Crystal Gentry and Jennifer Phillips; brother-in-law, Paul Boone; sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Jarrett, Helen Boone and Blanch Kelch; 14 great-grandchildren, Christian, Caleb, Davis, Sullivan, Tucker, Charlie, Anna, Alex, Ben, Joshua, Brandon, Rachel, Brooklyn, and Jared and his wife Grayson; six great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Daisy Mae.

Nellie’s family would like to thank the staff at NHC. We appreciate the care given to Nellie during her time there.

The family of Nellie Boone will receive friends from 11 AM until 1 PM on Friday, May 5, 2023, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 1 PM with Pastor Donny Reagan officiating. Finley Richard Johnson, Sr., age 84, of Squirrel Creek Road in Newland, died Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Brian Center Health & Rehab in Spruce Pine.

Born on June 14, 1934 in Avery County, he was the son of the late Theodore Roosevelt Johnson and Iva Young Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his Wife: Nora Hoilman Johnson and a Daughter: Remona Gwin Johnson.

Finley was a member of the Johnson Chapel Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Finley was an avid outdoorsman that enjoyed all kinds of hunting and was particularly fond of bear hunting. He also enjoyed fly fishing and his hunting dogs.

Left to cherish his memories are his Children; ReJeanna Trice, Finley Johnson, Jr., and Kristie Johnson, all of Newland; his Sister: Ruby Louise Shoupe of Newland; as well as 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

The family respectfully requested the honor of your presence at the graveside service and interment to honor the life of Finley Johnson, Sr. at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, in the Ashley Cemetery, with the Rev, Jim Shoupe officiating. Ruby Louise Johnson Shoupe, 84, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Monday, September 13, 2021 at her son's residence in Newland.

Ruby was born on December 5, 1936 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Theodore Johnson and the late Iva Young Johnson.

She was a devoted and faithful member of the Johnson Chapel who loved her church and worshiping her Savior Jesus Christ. Ruby was a loving mother and wife who enjoyed gardening and working in her flowers. Sewing brought her much pleasure as did cooking and preparing meals for her family, friends, and neighbors.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Jim Shoupe and a son, Keith Shoupe.

Ruby leaves behind to cherish her memory four sons, Richard (Joyce) Shoupe of Newland, NC, Bill (Diane) Shoupe of Rogersville, TN, Jim (Amelia) Shoupe of Newland, NC, Joe (Rebecca) Shoupe of Spruce Pine, NC; eight grandchildren, Shannon (Randy) Clark, Kim (Jason) Lolies, John (Samantha) Shoupe, Melinda Shoupe, Josh (Whitney) Shoupe, Elijah (Canaan) Shoupe, Caleb (Mattie) Shoupe, Noah Shoupe; ten great grandchildren, Macayla Benfield, Dalton Benfield, Tyler Smith, Marissa Lolies, Grayson Lolies, Savannah Shoupe, Austin Shoupe, Henry Shoupe, Zeke and Hannah Shoupe.

Services for Ruby Louise Johnson Shoupe will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2021 beginning at 3:30 pm from the Johnson Chapel with Rev. Dale Banks officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 2:30 pm on Saturday at the Johnson Chapel.

Interment will be in the Hughes Family Cemetery off Baxter Hughes Road in Newland.

David Buchanan, age 77, of Snow Creek Road in Bakersville, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2018 at his home.

Born on Aug. 3, 1941, in Avery County, he was the son of the late Robert and Judy Johnson Buchanan. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a Son: Curtis Buchanan; a Brother: Robert Buchanan, Jr.; and his Sisters: Diane Buchanan, Helen Hughes, and Glenda Lewis.

David was a member of the Snow Hill Baptist Church and was retired from the Mitchell County School System with twenty-four years of service. He loved spending time with his family and particularly his grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 48 years: Sue Willis Buchanan of the home; his Sons; David Buchanan and wife, Deanna of Bakersville, and Larry Buchanan of Belton, Mo.; six Grandchildren, including Mariah and Cameron Buchanan; his Sister: Etta Mae Jones and husband, Mack of Morganton; and his Brother: Milton Buchanan of Burnsville.

The funeral service honoring the life of David Buchanan was held at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018, at the Snow Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev's. Dean Honeycutt and Harrison Honeycutt officiating. A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends took place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018, at the church. Graveside services and interment were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, at the Snow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Diane Lynn Buchanan, 63, of Morganton, NC died Monday, August 07, 2017. Born on January 12, 1954 in Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Buchanan and Judy Johnson Buchanan.

Diane was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family dearly. She was a member of Mountain View #1 Church. Diane was a true born again Christian who enjoyed going to church. Before becoming disabled she sang and witnessed for the Lord.

In addition to her parents, Diane was preceded in death by her sister, Glenda Buchanan Bartlett and brother, Robert Buchanan, Jr.

Diane is survived by her husband, Joe Buchanan; daughters, Felicia Nunez and husband, Nicholas and Crystal Carswell and husband, Paul; step-sons, Joe Buchanan, Jr. and wife, Lorie and Jeff Buchanan and wife, Rebecca; and five grandchildren.

Shirley Buchanan McIntosh, age 69, of Newland, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Clyde and Juanita Johnson Buchanan.

Shirley was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She loved being a caregiver, her family (especially her kids and grandkids) and evangelism.

Surviving is her Husband of 51 years: Boots McIntosh; Son: Chris McIntosh (Laura) of Newland; Daughter: Shannon Fannon (Stacy), also of Newland; Grandchildren: Jacob Fannon (Dakota McKee), Caleb Fannon (Ali), Levi McIntosh (Zoe Daniels) and Hannah McIntosh; Great-grandchildren: Murphie Haseltine and Charlie Fannon; Sisters: RoseMary Daniels and Nadine White, both of Squirrel Creek; and Brother: Duane Buchanan (Laura) of Pickens, SC. Several other extended family members also survive.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Pastors Ron Greene and Lee Harmon will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. prior to the services. Burial will be private in the Ashley Cemetery.

Kevin Ray Whitehead, 53, Roan Mountain, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021, as the results of an automobile accident.
Kevin was a CNA and was a caregiver to several people. He loved to work in flowers and decorate.
Kevin attended Roan Park Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Sam Whitehead.
Survivors include his mother, Ruby Johnson Whitehead; one sister, Rita Tolley; two brothers, Clifford Whitehead and his fiancée Judy King, and Roger Whitehead and wife Margaret; several nieces and nephews; and his special cousins, Robin Stewart, Angie Whitehead, Daren Lacy, Billie Chinault and Diane Johnson.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 25, in the Johnson Roan View Cemetery with the Rev. Derrick Hughes officiating. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Thursday, will be Darren Lacy, Rusty Estep, Andy Stout, Adam Johnson, Travis Whitehead and Coby Tolley.
