Dr. Clarence "Bud" Carlton Hale, 97, of Kinston, NC. died Monday, May 28th.
Dr. Hale, born in Elizabethton, TN; was the son of the late Arthur Asa Hale and Sarah Lacy Hale and was the last surviving of nine children.
He was inducted into the Elizabethton, Tennessee High School Sports Hall of Fame, as a member of the 1938 state championship football team. A first sergeant during World War II in the Army National Guard, he served with the 30th Infantry Division "Old HIckory", 117th Infantry Regiment, Company "A". He landed on Omaha Beach in mid-June 1944 and entered combat soon thereafter. He was captured by German forces during the Battle of Normandy on August 7, 1944 in the Mortain Counterattack in Normandy, France, and was held as a prisoner of war for nine months until being liberated in April, 1945. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge and Bronze Star.
He was employed as a dentist with Caswell Center, retiring after 40 years. For many years he volunteered at Mary's Kitchen and Meals on Wheels.
Clarence married Thelma Clairetta Lyons on 18 Jun 1948 in Sullivan County, , , Tennessee. Thelma (daughter of Roy E. Lyons and Joy Smith) was born about 1930 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 6 Feb 2019 in Lenoir County, , , North Carolina; was buried in Pinelawn Memorial Park, , Lenoir County, North Carolina.
