Son of the late Chester Prather and Arizona "Zona" Carpenter Shook, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Liston Prather, Tom Shook, Carrol Stamey, and son-in-law, James Parker. He was a veteran of the United States Army (Korea) and was a member of the DAV. He was a member of Big Meadows Baptist Church where he was a former deacon for over 25 years. He was survived by his wife of 53 years, Georgie Lee Vance Prather (married on January 30, 1954); daughter, Janet Denise Parker, daughter, Ella "Nikki" Nichole and her husband, Freddie Carpenter; son, Bradley Milton Prater and his wife, Janice; brother, William Leo Prather and his wife, Wanda; grandchildren, Charity Michelle Moses and her husband, Scottie, Alisha Dawn Prather, Felece Danielle Prather, Chelsea Renee Carpenter; great-grandson, Nicholas Scott Moses; and an extended family of relatives and friends. His funeral was held August 9, 2007, at Big Meadows Baptist Church with The Revs. Joshua Calvert, Bill McGuire and Harry Lee Turbyfill officiating. He was retired from Great Lakes Carbon in Morganton, NC.

Georgia (daughter of Jasper Hayden Vance and Carrie Ella Trivette) was born on 25 May 1934 in , Avery County, North Carolina, ; died on 24 Feb 2015 in Buncombe County, , , North Carolina; was buried in Big Meadows Baptist Church Cemetery, , Avery County, North Carolina.
