    MINNEAPOLIS, N.C. — Mava Young Heaton, age 90, of Minneapolis, passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at Roan Highlands Nursing Home in Roan Mtn., TN.

    A native of Avery County, she was born March 12, 1922, a daughter of the late P.L. and Nell Burleson Young.

    She was a member of Minneapolis Christian Church and enjoyed working in the church, her flower garden, collecting angels, keeping a daily journal and telling stories about her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

    Mava retired from the Avery County Department of Social Services.

    Along with her parents, Mava was preceded in death by her: husband, James E. Heaton; sisters, Ava Vance, Iva Johnson, Evanell Young; brothers, Howard Young, Dayton Young; son-in-law, Barry Spratt.

    A devoted, wife, mother and Nanny, Mava has left to cherish her memory her: son, Jim H. Heaton and wife, Pam, of Johnson City, TN; daughter, Lucia Spratt, of Marion, NC; brother, Wood Hall Young Sr., of Minneapolis; grandchildren; Tiffany Strasser, Lori DeVault, Jamee Roberts, Leah Shomaker, Mary Ruppe, Jimmy Shomaker; great grandchildren, Levi, Jack, Josie, Max, Summer, Hank, Jameson; special care givers, Sherry Rose, Jenny Jones, Kathie Stewart; many special nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services for Mava Young Heaton will be conducted on Saturday, March 24th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Minneapolis Christian Church with Rev. Eddie Fine and Rev. Bryan Griffith officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Shoupe Family and Diane Pyatte, Pianist.

    Interment will follow in the Minneapolis Cemetery.

    Velma Young Grindstaff, age 94, of Minneapolis went home to be at rest on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, at Cannon Memorial Hospital.

    A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Dudley "Dud" and Virginia Lewis Young. She was also preceded in death by a Son: Glenn Ray Grindstaff; Grandson: Robert Bradley Grindstaff; Sister: Virginia Young Johnson and Brothers: DR Young, Jr. and Champ Clark Young. Velma was a member of Minneapolis Baptist Church where she taught the Children's Sunday School class for many years. She retired from Minneapolis Elementary School after 44 years of teaching. She enjoyed fishing, working in her flowers and spending time with her great-grandchildren.

    Surviving is her Son: Lewis Grindstaff and wife, Donna, of Minneapolis; Daughter-in-law: Linda Grindstaff of Concord; Grandchildren: Jaime Grindstaff of Minneapolis, John Grindstaff of Minneapolis and Ray Grindstaff of Concord; Great-grandchildren: Courtney and Shelby Grindstaff; Sisters-in-law: Bootsie Young and Ruth Young, both of Minneapolis and her Caregiver: Lois Ingram. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10, at Open Door Baptist Church. Rev. Tommy Carver and Rev. David Hobson will officiate. Burial will follow in the Minneapolis Cemetery.

    Joyce McKinney "Granny", 88, went home to be with Jesus on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at her home.

    She was the last of 11 children of the late Henry and Oakie Dona Buchanan Thomas. Waiting to welcome her into her eternal home, along with her parents; her husband, Roman McKinney; her twin sister, June Holder; sisters, Ruby and Hazel Thomas, Pansy Grindstaff, Hulda Briggs; brothers, Emmett, Robert, Arnold, Ernest and Tommy Thomas. Now the circle is unbroken.

    Left to cherish her sweet memory are two daughters, Jackie (Earl) Trice of Newland, NC and Judy Baird of Erwin, TN; three granddaughters, Amy Kleaving and Allen of Naval Base Charleston, Rosa Trice of Chattanooga, Tracy Dishman of Newland. One great grandson, Jake. Countless number of nieces and nephews; and a special one, Joe (Fredia) Thomas.

    She will be remembered for devotion to Jesus and countless prayers she prayed for her family and friends. If you had a problem you would call Granny and get her praying for comfort and for simple sound advice.

    Second to her prayers would be her love and devotion to family and friends. She was loved by everyone she never met a stranger, they were drawn in by her smile and just little cuteness. She loved nature and all things beautiful from a rainbow to a scrap of pretty paper. It took so very little to please her. She had a playfulness about her and a girlish joy for life.

    Flowers were her passion from a tiny wild spring violet to the beautiful gardens she so tenderly tended. Once she was overheard saying, "God, I don't worship flowers but I love them awful good". And she loved the little birds and could sit outside and listen for hours. Especially the tiny wren, when you see him and hear his song think of her.

    Services for Joyce A McKinney will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2023 beginning at 2:00 pm from the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

    The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 pm on Sunday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

    Interment will be in the Thomas Family Cemetery.
