After the war he was a crane operator. Then moved back to Bakersville to farm.

He was preceded in death by one son: Randy Garland, one brother: Roy Garland and two sisters Viola Masters and Nellie Yelton.

Survivors include three brothers: Ernest and Cecil Garland of Johnson City,TN. And Nattie Garland of Glen Rock,PA. three sisters: Fairy Mae Carver of York, PA. Hazel Stevens of Bakersville, NC and Shirley Yelton of Finksburg, MD. Two grand daughters.

Funeral Services will be conducted Sat. June 17, 2006 2PM at the chapel of Henline Hughes with GB Garland and Cecil Garland to officiate. The family will receive friends Two hours prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Greene – Garland Cemetery.

Bakersville - Georgia Viola Masters, 84, of Bakersville, died at her home Thursday, July 8, 2004, after a brief illness.
She was a daughter of the late Garrett and Mary Greene Garland. Mrs. Masters was a member of Berea Church of the Brethren, a devoted mother and loving wife to Frank Masters for 66 years.

Mrs. Masters is survived by her husband, Frank C. Masters; daughter, Barbara Masters Reid and husband, Ray, of Bakersville; three sons, Phillip and wife, Norma, Wilburn and wife, Pat, of Bakersville and Wayne and wife, Blanche, of Clear Springs, Md.; three sisters, Hazel Stevens of Bakersville, Fairy Mae Carver of Johnson City, Tenn., and Shirley Yelton of Finksburg, Md.; four brothers, Malone Garland of Bakersville, Cecil and Earnest Garland of Johnson City, Tenn., and Nattie Garland of Glen Rock, Pa.; four grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Nellie Yelton and one brother, Roy Garland.

The funeral service will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Henline-Hughes Funeral Home officiated by Clifford Willis, Ronnie Gouge and Cecil Garland.

Rev. Cecil Garland, born August 17, 1925 to Garrett and Mary Garland in Bakersville North Carolina, went peacefully to be with the Lord on March 27, 2019.

He was surrounded by his loving family, at his home for over 55 years, in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Cecil was a minister for over 50 years, serving several churches in the tri-cities area. He founded Bible Independent Church, over 40 years ago. His love was for fellowshipping, spending time with his family, fishing, camping and gardening. He was retired from Garland's Tree Service, which he founded with his son.

In 1951, he married his sweetheart, Charlise Jean Ayers. They were happily married for over 67 years. Having two sons: Larry Garland and wife Diana Milhorn Garland, and Johnny Garland; Four grandchildren: Jennifer Garland Johnson and husband David Johnson; Kimberly Garland Ledford and husband Jared Ledford, Mikell Garland and Dewey Garland. One great-grandchild, Paisley Grace Ledford; Three siblings: Earnest Garland of Johnson City, Tennessee, Chirley Yelton of Maryland and Fairy Mae Carver of Pennsylvania.

Funeral services for Rev. Cecil Garland will be conducted in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at 4:00 P.M. with Rev. Charlie McCamey and Rev. Gary Rodgers officiating.

Friends will be received at Tetrick Funeral Home on Sunday, after 1:30 P.M. until the hour of service at 4:00 P.M.

Hazel Belle Stevens, 84, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, May 25, 2012 surrounded by her loving family. She was under the care of Hospice of Mitchell County and the family wishes to express their appreciation for their care and support. Born October 20, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Garrett and Mary Greene Garland. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe Stevens; a son, Charles Lee Stevens Sr; a grandson, Charles Lee Stevens Jr; two brothers, Malone Garland and Roy Garland; two sisters, Viola Masters and Nellie Yelton.

She was a member of Fork Mountain Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. She worked at Hampshire Hosiery for 17 years while being a homemaker to her family.

Survivors include her son, Joey Stevens of Spruce Pine; grandsons, Jody Stevens and Jamie Stevens of Spruce Pine; granddaughter, Jerry Howell of Green Mountain; great granddaughter, Brittney Howell of Green Mountain and Sarah Ellis of Bakersville; great granddaughter, Jadyn Ellis of Bakersville; sisters, Fairy Carver of Dover, PA, and Shirley Yelton of Finksburg, MD, brothers; Cecil Garland and Ernest Garland of Johnson City, TN, and Nattie Garland of Glenn Rock, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

JOHNSON CITY - Ernest H. Garland, age 87, of Elizabethton, TN passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Bakersville, NC, he was the son of the late Garrett and Mary Greene Garland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Garland; sisters: Hazel Stevens, Viola Masters, and Nellie Yelton; brothers: Cecil, Malone, Roy, and Nattie Garland.

Ernest operated Garland Tree Service in Johnson City for 65 years. He loved to work, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and bluegrass music. He was also a member of Beans Creek Church of Jesus Christ.

Survivors include his sons: Richard Garland of Westminster, PA and Roger Garland of Johnson City; daughter, Teresa Curtis of Johnson City; sisters: Shirley Yelton of Finksburg, MD and Fairy Mae Carver of Dover, PA; grandchildren: Jessica Trent, Patty Wisniewski, James Curtis and Tommy Garland; great grandchildren: Shannon Peterson, Evan Peterson, Kadynn Trent, Colt Wisniewski, and Taylor Wisniewski.

Anarose Byrd, age 80, of Shady Lane Bakersville, NC entered into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Monday, December 30, 2019.

Anarose was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved her family dearly. She was a beautiful person inside and out and was once a contestant in The Rhododendron Pageant in 1958. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed the outdoors.

She was a daughter of the late Roy and Pearl McKinney Greene.

Anarose loved her work with the Mitchell County Sheriffs Department, and was also manager for Circulation Library in Gwinnett County Georgia.

Survivors include: one daughter; Rosemarie Janke (Siegfried), of Spring Valley, Illinois, two sons; Tony Byrd (Selina), of Newland, NC, and Gaylen Byrd, of Bakersville, NC, two sisters; Florence Ingram, of Burnsville, NC, and Rachel Reddon (Ronnie), of Asheville, NC, three grandchildren; Ariel Thomas, Danielle Byrd, and Elijah Byrd, one great grandson; Mason Thomas, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by: her husband; Foster Byrd, one sister; Phyllis Sullins, and a brother; Ancle Greene.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 3, 2020 at 1:30 PM in the chapel of Henline - Hughes Funeral Home with Dr. Darrin Waldroup officiating. William Harrison Hughes Jr., 90, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, May 12, 2019, at Hillview Health Center.
William was born on July 23, 1928 to the late William Hughes Sr. and Nettie Garland Hughes. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Cook; a sister, Leona Hazelwood; and an infant son, Sidney Kip Hughes.
William was a Millwright by trade. He was of the Baptist Faith.
His family left to cherish his memory are his wife of 36 years, Shirley Goode Hughes; daughter, Paula Jo Bowman and husband Jeff, and a son; step-daughters, Mary Whitehead, Becky Powers and husband Jerry, Misty Babb and husband Greg and Nerissa Stout; a step-son, Mike Stout; four grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Anna Lee Babb, Thelma Arnold and Phyllis Sue Sardi; and his best friend, Roy Gunter of Pelion, S.C.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Roger Stockton officiating.

CARTER COUNTY - Millard “M.M.” Garland, age 81, of Carter County transitioned peacefully on Sunday, July 24th due to complications of cancer. He was fortunate to spend his final days in his home, surrounded by his family.

Millard is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Judy Ann Garland, and his children Audrey Kelaher Briggs, Marvin Garland and his wife Angie, and Amy Garland; his grandchildren, Joshua, Alexandra, and Samuel Kelaher, Savannah and Sawyer Garland, and Dillon Andes; and two great-granddaughters, Aisley Kelaher and Harper Andes. Each of these lives were greatly enriched by his abiding love, unfailing support, and his ever-gentle strength.

Millard is also survived by his beloved brother, Jess (Marsha) – with whom he loved attending Friday night football games, his dear sister Georgia Lyon and brother-in-law Dana Lyon, his beloved sister Margie Leonard, as well as many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Jack, Phil, and Ted Garland, as well as sister Marie Garland. The iconic “Garland Family” is known widely for their athletic prowess, tireless work ethic, and fierce love of family.

Millard was born in Fork Mountain, NC on November 12, 1940 and moved to Carter County at the age of seven. His late parents – Arnold and Vista Garland – instilled in their eight children the traits of grit and humor, a characteristic legacy that thrives in their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

At Happy Valley High School, Millard was known as a tough opponent on the football field, a lover of fast cars, and a friend to all. While in high school, he met Judy Ann Patterson, who – at first sight – became the love of his life. Together, they created a life filled with devotion to each other and their three children, who each enjoyed a magical childhood.

Always intent on providing for his family, Millard frequently held multiple jobs, including working for Raytheon Technologies during the Vietnam War, a contribution to defense so valued by his country, he was awarded a deferment from the war. In 1965, he was employed by Clinchfield (eventually CSX) Railroad, where he made lifelong friends, and enjoyed a 37-year career. After retirement in 2002, he and Judy lived “their best life” for more than 20 years, delighting in their home and six grandchildren.

During retirement, Millard devoted extensive time and resources to his community and those less fortunate. He was an active volunteer with the Carter County Democratic Party, passionately advocating for social issues. He was especially proud of his 18-year service on the Carter County Election Commission, his service with the Shriners, and his 47-year membership as a Mason with Watauga Lodge #622.

Millard will be remembered by all for his keen wit, his innate wisdom, his gentle spirit, and his extraordinary strength of mind and body. His legacy of a “life well lived” will continue to inspire family and friends to be kind, always.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 30, from 11am - 1pm at Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home in Elizabethton, followed by a graveside service at 2pm at Roselawn Cemetery in Johnson City. Pallbearers are Jess Garland, Marvin Garland, Joshua Kelaher, Samuel Kelaher, Dillon Andes, and Sawyer Garland.

Helen Gouge Garland, 82, Unicoi, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2015, in the Center on Aging and Health in Erwin.

A native of Mitchell County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Daisey McKinney Gouge.

Mrs. Garland was employed as a nurse and worked for Texas Instruments for sixteen years. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church of Lord Jesus Christ. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by one sister, Carolyn Gouge.

Survivors include her husband Clyde William Garland; Son and Daughter-in-law, Michael E. Garland and wife Melanie, Unicoi and Son, Daniel R. Garland, Johnson City and special friend Nancy Casteel. JOHNSON CITY - Jessie Greene King, age 76, of Johnson City, TN, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at her residence. She was born in Bakersville, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Ford Greene and Belle Whitson Greene. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Bernice Udry; one brother, Bernie Greene; and one nephew, Matthew B. Greene.

Jessie was a Christian. In previous years she had worked for Penny’s Department Store in Sales. In later years, she worked as a housewife and loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Ronnie King; two step daughters, Kim Stanewicz and Danielle Spurling; four step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Nancy Greene; three nieces, Sandra Houser, Sandra Gail Newell, and Julie Johnson; three nephews, Matthew Greene, Jeff Greene, and Ronnie Lowe; and her special dog, Spencer.

There will be no formal services held.
