Gertrude Shell Rice, age 96, of Erwin, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital's Long Term Care Unit. Gertrude is a native of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late David Carson "D.C." and Martha Miller Shell. Gertrude was a member of Ninth Street Baptist Church and a member of the Blue Ridge Pottery Club. In addition to her parents Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred "B.E." Rice; sisters Mary Slemons and Ruth Buchanan; brothers Harry Shell, Lester Shell and Floyd Shell.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence as we offer tribute and remember the life of Gertrude Shell Rice in a funeral service to be at 7:00 PM, Thursday, December 8, 2016, in the chapel of Valley Funeral Home. Brother Rick Babin will officiate. A visitation period to share memories and offer support to the family will begin at 6:00 PM and will continue until service time on Thursday. A graveside service will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, December 9, 2016 at Evergreen Cemetery. Those attending will meet at Evergreen Cemetery for the service.

Lester C. "Tubby" Shell, age 83, 109 Bradshaw Woods, Erwin, died Friday, December 4, 2009, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Shell was a Unicoi County native and a resident of Erwin for most of his life.

He was a son of the late David Carson and Martha Ellen Miller Shell.

Mr. Shell retired in 1992 as a Captain from the Erwin Police Department after twenty-six years of service. He was formerly employed with Nuclear Fuel Services and the Unicoi County Sheriffs Department.

Mr. Shell was instrumental in the organization and development of the Erwin Emergency and Rescue Squad, and was a Charter Member.

He received an Associate Degree from Steed College.

Mr. Shell was a U.S. Army veteran serving three terms during World War II and the Korean War, attaining the rank of Sergeant.

He was a member of Clear Branch Baptist Church and the National Rifle Association.

Mr. Shell enjoyed hunting and fishing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Harry Shell, and one sister, Mary Slemons.

Mr. Shell is survived by, his wife of forty-six years, Elouise Guinn Shell; three brothers, Lawrence Shell and wife Alma and Bernie Shell, all of Unicoi and Floyd Shell and wife Sara, Erwin; two sisters, Gertrude Rice, Erwin and Ruth Buchanan, Bakersville, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews, including special nieces and nephews, Robbie Piercy, Teresa Piercy Honeycutt, Judy Slemons, Karen Walker, Tony Slemons and Randy Shell.

The funeral service will be conducted Monday, December 7, 2009, at 8:00 P.M. from the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Bill Ponder and the Reverend Earl Ragland officiating. Special music will be provided by Queenie Wheeler, Alfred Dugger and Inez Chandler.

The graveside committal service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. in Evergreen Cemetery. Officers from the Erwin Police Department will serve as active pallbearers and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers. Family, ministers, pallbearers and friends are requested to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 A.M. Tuesday.

UNICOI - Lawrence Shell, 91, of Unicoi went to be with the Lord in his heavenly home on August 10, 2019 with his devoted wife never leaving his side. He was born on June 5, 1928 in Unicoi, Tennessee to David and Martha Miller Shell. He proudly served his country in the US Army from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean War. He retired from CSX Transportation and Unicoi County School system.

Lawrence will be lovingly and forever remembered by his wife of 58 years, Alma Davis Shell; Sister-in-laws Eloise Shell and Shelby Gage; Nieces, Judy Slemons, Karen Walker, Emily (Andy) Fletcher; Nephews, Randy Shell, Tony (Lisa) Slemons, Mike Buchanan, Mark (Kimberly) Gage; multiple great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Martha Shell; sisters, Mary Slemons, Gertrude Rice, Ruth Buchanan; brothers, Harry Shell, Lester Shell, Bernie Shell and Floyd Shell.

He was an active member of Redeemed Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and song leader and attended Marantha Tabernacle. He loved servng the Lord and his pastors were faithful in ministering to him and his family, Sylvan Mullins and E. L. Wheeler. Through his life of service, many other pastors have been a blessing to him including Bruce Teare, Brad Davis and Jim Bishop. He and his wife, Alma, loved others and found great joy in helping those around them.

A special thanks to the loving friends and caregivers that have supported Lawrence and Alma - Shelley and Kourtney Bailey, Alice Miller, Bud and Mary Blankenship, David Penley, Richard Smith and especially, Debra Uncapher for her great care of Lawrence plus the entire Health and Home Care Family of Erwin for their endless support of both Lawrence and Alma.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM at Limestone Cove Methodist Church on Thursday, August 15, 2019 with Pastors Mullins and Wheeler officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM prior to the service at the church. Lawrence will be buried with military honors on Friday morning at 11am at the Garland Cemetery in Limestone Cove.

UNICOI - Venton B. Shell, age 87, of Unicoi, Tennessee, passed away Sunday, November 4, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended stay at Agape Healthcare, Johnson City.

A native of Erwin, TN, he was a son of the late David Carson and Martha Miller Shell. Mr. Shell was graduate of East Tennessee State University, where he received his degree in education. Mr. Shell taught his entire career at Richlands High School in Richlands, Virginia. He was a US Navy veteran serving during the Korean War. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Shell was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Slemons, Ruth Buchanan, and Gertrude Rice; three brothers, Harry Shell, Lester Shell, and Floyd Shell.

Left to cherish his memory is his brother, Lawrence Shell and wife Alma, Unicoi; sister-in-law, Elouise Shell, Erwin; two nieces, Judy Slemons, Johnson City, Karen Walker, Erwin; three nephews, Randy Shell, Elizabethton, Tony Slemons, Erwin, and Michael Buchanan, Bakersville, North Carolina.

The funeral service for Mr. Shell will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, November 8, 2018 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastor Sylvan Mullins and Pastor Alan Evans officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 7:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at the Mountain Home National Cemetery.

Floyd P. Shell, 81 of 1355 Rock Creek Road, Erwin went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, November 9, 2016 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Unicoi County and was a son of the late Carson and Martha Miller Shell. Mr. Shell retired from Hoover Ball Inc... He was a member of the New Life Tabernacle Church in Johnson City. Mr. Shell was a veteran having served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He enjoyed watching ballgames, listening to old country-western music, loved the outdoors and taking scenic drives. Mr. Shell also loved reading his bible and he truly enjoyed his wife's cooking.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Buchanan and two brothers, Harry and Lester Shell.

Survivors include his loving wife, Sara Allen Shell of the home; two sons, Robert Allen and Rocky Allen and wife, Karen all of Erwin; two brothers, Bernie Shell of Johnson City and Lawrence Shell and wife, Alma of Unicoi; a sister, Gertrude Rice of Erwin; three grandchildren, Jessica Burleson and husband, Chris of Unicoi, Samantha Allen and Kayla Allen both of Erwin; two sisters-in-law, Mae Shell and Elouise Shell both of Erwin; several nieces and nephews; also his church family at New Life Tabernacle.

Funeral services for Mr. Shell will be conducted at 1:30 PM Thursday, November 17, 2016 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Pastor Larry Dugger and Pastor E.L. Wheeler officiating. Interment will follow in the Mountain Home National Cemetery at 2:30 PM. with Dr. Mike Tittle officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Boone Dam VFW Honor Guard Detail. Unicoi County High School ROTC Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 12:30 until the service hour.

ERWIN - Frank G. Shell, age 81, of Erwin, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2022, at his home. A native of Erwin, Frank is a son of the late Paul and Roxie (Lloyd) Shell. He was of the Freewill Baptist faith and served as Deacon for more than 50 years. Frank was an employee of the State Forestry Service. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Frank is preceded in death by his sister, Bessie Stancil and two brothers, Wayne Shell and Jerry Shell.

Those attending the committal service should meet Valley Funeral Home by 10:30 am on Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
