DEAD Victim of Heart Attack; Coroner Called Lum Shell, 53, well known farmer of Shell Creek community, was found dead, a victim of a heart attack, by his wife, about 3 p.m. yesterday.
The body was found about one fourth of a mile from the Shell home after Mrs. Shell had begun to search for her husband when he did not return at the appointed time and did not answer her calls.
The victim had had several other attacks before the fatal one, which occurred while he was looking over his crops.
Coroner W. T. Ferguson investigated the death.
Funeral services will be held from the home Friday afternoon. Interment will be in the Perry Cemetery, Shell Creek.

Thursday, January 18, 2001, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief
illness.
Mrs. Deloach was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late
Daniel and Missouri Clark Shell. She was also preceded in death by her
first husband, Spencer Singleton, her second husband, Rev. Virgil Deloach,
and by nine brothers and three sisters.
Mrs. Deloach was a member of Morgan Branch Free Will Baptist Church and
was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Anna Singleton,
Elizabethton; a daughter and son-in-law, Faye and Tommy Gould, Alexander
City, Ala.; a sister, Dorothy Guinn, Roan Mountain; and three grandsons,
Randy Singleton, Elizabethton, Tim Gould, Valdosta, Ga., and Tommy Gould,
Anderson, S.C. Six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also
survive.

Dorothy M. Shell Guinn, age 91, of 115 Bud Miller Road, Roan Mountain, TN., died Saturday, January 22, 2005 at the Charles A. Cannon, Jr., Memorial Hospital, Linville, NC following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, TN (Shell Creek Community) , she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Loraine Clark Shell. Mrs. Guinn was the last charter member of Morgan Branch Freewill Baptist Church, Roan Mountain. She was a homemaker and a foster care parent to over 30 children.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Guinn, August 29, 1976, two sons, Clifton and Harold Guinn; four sisters, eight brothers, and one grandson, Mike Montgomery.

Survivors include: three daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and Rev. John Montgomery, Johnson City, Betty and Jack Hoilman, Roan Mountain, Pam and Rev. Danny Cooke, Roan Mountain; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmie and Lola Guinn, Richard and Barbara Guinn, all of Roan Mountain; 22 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, one great great grand daughter. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at Morgan Branch Freewill Baptist Church, Roan Mountain with Rev. Keith Gwynn and Rev. Jim Storie officiating. The graveside service and interment will follow in the Richardson Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be selected from Mrs. Guinn's grandsons. Mrs. Stanley was the owner of Stanley Trailer Park. She was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.

Mrs. Maxine McKinney Matherly, 76, 119 Beryl Fletcher Road, Elizabethton, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at the residence of her daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Larry Williams, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Matherly was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late William M. and Stella Shell McKinney. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Matherly, February 10, 1997, and by two brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Matherly operated the Tastee-Freez and Maxine's Sycamore Drive-In for a number of years until her retirement. She was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include one other daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Maynard Campbell, Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Sammy and Sally Matherly, Elizabethton; five sisters, Lilly Lyons, Hampton, Missouri Brown, Creola Stanley, Agnes Walker and Willie Jean Baughman, all of Elizabethton; and six grandchildren, April Matherly, Raymond Williams and his wife, Rebecca, Brian Williams, Carter Campbell, Tina Reece and her husband, Tim, and Josh Campbell. Five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Homer Shell, 70, of Elizabethton, entered into rest Sunday, February 3, 2019, at Southern Ohio Medical Center, Portsmouth, Ohio.
Mr. Shell was the son of the late Burl and Iva King Shell from Roan Mountain. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma "Peach" Shell; brothers, Roy King, Charles Shell and Clyde Shell; sister, Barbara Manring; and son, Kraig Kiser.
Homer was a lifelong resident of Carter County. He was a retired machinist from Alemite Corporation. Before his health deteriorated, he enjoyed farming and tinkering with old cars and trucks.
Homer is survived by five children, Kevin Kiser, Lisa Evans, Kristi Perkins, Daniel Shell and wife Donna Mitchell-Vitoux and Jason Shell and wife Sandy. He leaves to cherish his memory the following grandchildren, Erin Kiser, Emily Kiser, Kolby Evans, Kylee Evans, Alleea Shell, DJ Shell, Eric Vitoux, Elizabeth Vitoux, Kaylen Shell and Jasy Shell. Additionally, he leaves treasured friends, Bud Kent and Roger Weaver, along with caretakers, Beulah "Mutt" Williams and Irene Birkner.
The family will greet guests and share memories from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday, February 9, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with a Celebration of Life to follow at noon with the Rev. Estell Williams and the Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Gina Johnson, Anette LeVeau and Robin Montgomery. Richard A. "Rick" Guinn, 65, of Roan Mountain, was born May 11, 1953 at the home of his parents, on Bud Miller Road, Roan Mountain. On Thursday, October 4, 2018, Rick received divine healing from our Lord, surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, George and Dorothy Shell Guinn; a daughter, Melissa McMahan; and a grandson, Jerry "Bubba" Potter. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, Clifford Guinn, Harold Guinn and Norma Jean Montgomery.
Rick earned a living and provided for his family as a master craftsman and expert carpenter for 51 years. He loved the mountains of upper East Tennessee. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and Cloudland football. He loved spending time with his family and watching his grandchildren play sports and dance. He loved cookouts and picnics.
Rick is survived by his wife of 37 years, Barbara Jones Guinn; two sons, Chad and wife Katrine of Cameron, N.C., and Derrick and wife Carissa of Roan Mountain; two daughters, Sue Ann Guinn Foster of Roan Mountain and Johnnie Guinn Russ of Johnson City. Rick's pride and joy was his 13 wonderful and loving grandchildren, Dylen Markland, Macy Markland, Meagen Markland, Kenzie Foster, Lilly Guinn, Elijah Guinn, Mikah Guinn, Hadassah Guinn, Blake Dugger, Kaila McMahan, Danielle McMahan, Emma McMahan and Erica Guinn. Special friends are Lee Thomas, Steve Blair, Dewey Miller, Tom Dyer, Peter Dansi, former employees of T&B Construction, and the people of his home church, Morgan Branch Free Will Baptist.
A service for Richard A. "Rick" Guinn will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, October 7, at Morgan Branch Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Bob Campbell and Pastor David Montgomery officiating. Music will be provided by Eric Heaton and the Morgan Branch Singing Group. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. before the service. The graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, October 8, in the Richardson Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Pamela Joan Cooke, 65, Butler, formerly of Roan Mountain, went home to be with Jesus on Monday, February 28, 2022, at Franklin Woods Hospital with her family by her side. She was born April 24, 1956 in Banner Elk, N.C.
Pam was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as a loving sister and aunt. Words cannot describe how much she loved her Lord.
Pamela was a graduate of Cloudland High School. She was a great pastor’s wife and was willing to do whatever was needed to help her husband and the church. Those who knew her loved her, and God had blessed her with a beautiful voice to sing, especially the song “Under His Wings.” And she only used it for God’s Glory.
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Dorothy Shell Guinn; brothers, Harold Guinn, Rick Guinn and infant Clifford; and a sister, Norma Montgomery.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 47 years, Danny Cooke; two daughters, Melanie (Todd) Guy and Elizabeth (Bobby) Guinn; and a son, of the home, Daniel “Jake” Cooke. She was the best Granny to her grandchildren, Taylor Guy, Matthew Guy, Kelsey Guy, Madison Guy, Benjamen Guy, a step-granddaughter, Caitlyn (Jake) Trivett, and her special great-grandson, Hudson Arnett; one sister, Betty Hoilman; a brother, Jim (Lola) Gwyn; sisters-in-law, Shirley Miller and Barbara Guinn; and her very special friends, Lucinda Green and Goldia Tolley. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Pamela Cooke will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with her husband, Pastor Danny Cooke, officiating. Music will be provided by the Montgomery Family. Interment will follow in the Abe Trivette Cemetery, Butler. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews, Matthew Guy, Benjamen Guy, David Montgomery, Brian Hoilman, Mark Guinn and Derrick Guinn.

ELIZABETHTON - Thomas “Dempsey” Shell, Sr., age 85, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Dempsey was born in Shell Creek, Tennessee to the late Ernest B. Shell and Delcie Dugger Shell. In addition to his parents, Dempsey was also preceded in death by a sister, Marie Starling; a brother-in-law, Charles W. Snodgrass; and a daughter-in-law, Donna C. Shell.

Dempsey was a loving husband and father and a United States Navy and Marine Corp Reserves veteran- having served as a radar man aboard the USS Noa DD 841. He was a real estate broker and developer for over 40 years and was the owner and operator of Shell Associates Real Estate and Development. Dempsey was instrumental in the development of Quail Hollow and West Links subdivisions. He was a member of the City Council, a life member of BPOE, the JC’s, and a member of the National and State Association of Realtors and NETAR. Dempsey had worked with the American Red Cross and enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting in the West and in Alaska. He loved to read, loved living at Watauga Lake for the past 30 years and loved his German Shepherds, “Shane”.

Those left to cherish Dempsey’s legacy and memory include his wife of 64 years, Linda (Snodgrass) Shell; his son, Dempsey Shell Jr and partner Marti Johnson; his brother, Ladd Shell and wife Tessie and their family; his sister, Judy Lyons and her family; a special friend, Kenny Fortner; a special son, Doug Crockett and the Lohse family in Wyoming.

A service to celebrate Dempsey’s life will be held privately at a later date.
