It is with great sadness that the family of Belvia Phipps announces her passing on Tuesday, January 10, 2022 at her residence at the age of 98. She was born May 17, 1923 in Taylorsville County, Kentucky to the late James Monroe Kilby and Doris Shoemake Kilby. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William Buell Phipps; step-mother Rose Kilby; sons: Bill Phipps and Milton Phipps; daughters: Irene Snyder and Patricia Phipps; brothers: Jason Kilby, Millard Kilby and Coy Ray Kilby and one great-great grandson Elijah William Hilton (Fuzz); sisters: Nanny Roark, Mary Vanela Kilby, Mable Payne, Dorothy Kulin and Marie Widener,
Belvia was a former employee of Iron Mountain Stonewear and was a homemaker. She enjoyed quilting, flowers, baby dolls,gardening and canning. She was a member of Faith Gospel Church.
Those left to cherish her memory include one son: Kenneth Phipps of Laurel Bloomery, TN; four daughters: Betty Bryant Bowers of Bristol, TN, Lois Snyder of Mountain City, TN, Virginia Hodge of Shady Valley, TN and Carmie Cornett of Mountain City, TN; grandsons: Doug Bryant, Leon Bryant, Rick Bryant, Dennis Bryant, Darren Bryant, Jody Putnam, Willie Phipps, Doug Whisman and Trampass Hodge; granddaughters: Tammy McCloud, Pam Brown, Lucinda Jones, Rebekah Phipps-Stines, Jennifer Howard, Angelina Snyder, Patricia Phillips and Myra Phipps; great grandchildren: Toby Bryant, Josh Bryant, Billy Bryant, Cody Bryant, Dustin Bryant, D.J. Bryant, Sam Bryant, Tanner Putnam, Sammy Phipps, Noah Phipps, Hunter Hodge, Annabelle Miller, Angel Gooddell, Shainna Putnam, Liddy Arnold, Maddy Arnold, Griffin Brown, Carson Brown, Brittney Hodge, Nellie Wilson, Sasha Bryant, Sara Bryant, Olivia Bryant, Dakota Bryant, Laura King, Monica Bryant, Jason Bryant, Emma Savery, Lily Savery, Lexus Winters, Autumn Phipps, Kaylee Eller; fourteen great great grandchildren; one great great great grandchild: Luke Sluder; one sister: Edna Bowling and one sister-in-law: Ruby Kennard. Many nieces and nephews (too many to mention) and many friends also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 14, 2022 in Hux & Lipford Funeral Home Chapel with James Gentry and Tony Ward officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m – 2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Graveside service and interment will follow in Acre Field Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Chuck Ward, Eric Taylor, Tim Keene and sons-in-law.

Dorothy Lorraine 'Dot' Kilby Kulin, age 85, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, November 25, 2018 at the Watauga Medical Center. Dot was born on June 13, 1933 to the late James Kilby and Rose Mabe Kilby. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her three wonderful husbands, Staley Jack Pennington, Adam Folk Lingle and Steven Kulin; her loving daughter, Patsy Pennington Hopper and siblings, Nanny Roark, Marie Widner, Mabel Payne, Millard Kilby and Jason Kilby.

Dot was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother and sister who had a beauty of character that endeared her to all who crossed her path. She will be missed but always remembered for her laugh, sense of humor, generosity, and her momma bear attitude when it came to protecting her children. Dot gave so much of herself to her family and friends and loved ones close to her. Her parting creates a void that will never be filled. Dot loved working in her garden and with her flowers but enjoyed being with her family more than anything.

Dot was a devout Christian and attended Shady Valley Baptist Church. She believed in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She retired from Levi Strauss & Company in Mountain City, TN. Following her retirement, Dot and her late husband Steve traveled all over the US. She had a zeal for life and never turned anyone away from her home. Come hungry, leave full, was her motto.

Those left to cherish her memories include her children, Staley Jack Pennington Jr. of Shady Valley, TN and Rosemary Pennington Smith and husband David of Smithfield, VA; son-in-law, Greg Hooper of Troutman, NC; brother, Coy Ray Kilby and wife Nancy of Lenoir, NC; sisters; Edna Bowlin of Hendersonville, NC and Belvia Phipps of Laurel Bloomery, TN; grandchildren, Jeffery Coffey and wife Gwen, Alan Walsh and wife Amy, Coty Pennington, Carry Coffey and Amanda Saval and husband Kyle; seven great grandchildren and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 29, 2018 at the Mountain City Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Ken Phipps officiating. Special guest speakers will be Dan Manual and David Smith. Graveside service and interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, VA. Pallbearers will be Gary Payne, Gregory Payne, Larry Widner, Mickey Widner, Brian Jenkins and Ronnie Mains. Honorary pallbearers are Wayne Estridge, Ricky Bowlin, Billy Sitton, Lillard Blevins and Kenneth Sluder.

The family would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and entire staff of Watauga Medical Center, Home Health Nurses and Physical Therapy Staff for all of your kindness. Your caring made a world of difference.

Coy Ray Kilby age 79, of Granite Falls, NC passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2019 at his home. He was born on August 1, 1940 in Shady Valley, TN to the late James Kilby and Rose Mabe Kilby. In addition to his parents Coy was preceded in death by his son James Roy Kilby (November 21, 2008), sisters, Nanny Roark, Marie Widener, Mabel Payne, Dorothy (Dot) Kulin, brothers, Millard Kilby and Jason Kilby.

Those who know Coy Ray best knew even though he lived and worked in Granite Falls, NC for many years the place he called home was Shady Valley, TN where he enjoyed coming to often. Coy enjoyed Trout Fishing and gardening and then giving the vegetables away. He was of the Baptist Faith.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 57 years, Nancy Isaacs Kilby, daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Robert Lail of Granite Falls, NC , two grandsons, Robert Lail, Jr. and Joshua Lail, sisters, Edna Bowlin and Belva Phipps, several nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends from 12-1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September, 24, 2019 from the Mountain City Funeral Home. Graveside service and burial will follow from the Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, VA. with to Ken Phipps to officiate. Pallbearers will be Nephews and friends.

Milton David Phipps, age 68, passed away at his residence in Johnson City, Tennessee on Monday, October 8, 2018. Milton was born in Mountain City, Tennessee on November 21, 1949, to William Phipps and Belvia Kilby Phipps. Milton was preceded in death by his father, his brother Bill Phipps, and two sisters Irene Snyder and Patricia Phipps.

Milton was a lifelong student and enjoyed learning about new things. In his free time, Milton enjoyed collecting all kinds of different things and he really enjoyed watching Tennessee football.

Those left to cherish memories of Milton are his mother, Belvia Phipps; sisters, Carmia Cornett, Lois Snyder, and Betty Bryant of Mountain City, Virginia Hodge of Shady Valley, and Betty Warden of Abingdon; brother Kenneth Phipps of Mountain City; several aunts, uncles, and cousins, nieces and nephews; the staff of Dawn of Hope, especially "Baby".

Pallbearers will be Jody Putnum, Trampass Hodge, David Whisman, Dennis Bryant, Rick Bryant, Willie Phipps, Junior Cornett, and Ed Hodge. Honorary pallbearers will be Dawn of Hope Staff.

The family and close friends will meet Thursday, October 11th, 2018, for a private gathering with Graveside services to follow in the Acre Field Cemetery in Laurel Bloomery, TN.
