    Carrie Ester Jarrett of Roan Mountain was welcomed into heaven early Sunday, February 14, 2010, at the Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness. Granny Carrie just recently celebrated her 93rd birthday. She was born January 11, 1917 to Nathaniel and Sallie Bowling Miller. She grew up on what is known as the Dave Miller Homestead at the Roan Mountain State Park where she enjoyed sharing her heritage and displaying her homemade quilts. Carrie proudly attended Backwoods School on Ripshin Mountain as a child. She was married to Jesse Jarrett for 59+ years and spent most of her life as a farmer and co-owner of Jarrett Orchards with her husband. She was also an ideal homemaker, an excellent cook, loved to surround her house with flowers, especially her dahlias, designed and created quilts and clothes. Most of all she enjoyed taking care of and spending time with her family and friends. Carrie was a proud Christian lady who loved to study the Bible and was a long-time member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church, where she formerly served as children's teacher, deacons's wife and was always willing to lend a willing hand to those in need. Carrie was preceded in death by her husband, Jess H. Jarrett; a daughter, Barbara Jarrett Heaton; a granddaughter, Becky Emmert Bailey; a nephew, Ray Street; and her siblings, David Miller, Frank Miller, Eula Miller, Stewart Miller, Lloyd Miller and Mary Sue Joslyn Pate.

    Survivors include her children, Marie and Hubert Hodge, Blountville, Betty and Jim Hughes, Elizabethton, Grace and Buzz Presnell, Bristol, Harold and Beth Ann Jarrett, Roan Mountain, and a niece she raised as her own, Florence Street Holcomb of Fargo, N.D.; a special niece, Helen Sue Rankin; her grandchildren, Greg and Tracy Heaton, Jeff and Lisa Hodge, Scott and Pat Hodge, Gina and John Buck, Jimmy and Lori Hughes, Denna and Lincoln Shelton and Michael Hughes; her great-grandchildren, Autum and David Shell, Amanda Heaton, Emily Hodge, Matthew Hodge, Hannah Hodge, Brandon Hodge and Victoria Hughes; and her great-great-grandchildren, Hunter Shell, Chase Shell and Mandy Lewis. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors and friends also survive. Active pallbearers will be Greg Heaton, Jeff Hodge, Scott Hodge, Jimmy Hughes, Michael Hughes, Jon Buck and Bill Bailey. Honorary pallbearers will be Marie Barnett, Ruth and Ted Barnett, Mary Troutman, Pauline Hill, Willie and Jack Troutman, Richard and Wanda Blevins, Spence Stockton, Lynn and Mary Brown, Onza Johnson, staff and nurses at Roan Highlands Rehab Center, Dr. Kimmel, all her lady friends from the community, her church family and her nieces and nephews whom she loved very much.

    A Service to Celebrate the Life of Carrie Ester Jarrett will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 16, at the Burbank Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Lincoln Shelton, the Rev. Mark Birchfield and the Rev. Johnny Hill officiating. Music will be provided by Aaron Stockton, soloist. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 17, in the Jarrett Family Cemetery, Jess Jarrett Road, Roan Mountain.

    Carrie married Jesse H. Jarret about 1935 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Jesse (son of William M. Jarret and Myra Street) was born on 15 Aug 1914 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 26 Jan 2000 in , Avery County, North Carolina, ; was buried in Jarrett Family Cemetery, , Carter County, Tennessee.
