    Mrs. Leila B. McGuire, 96, of Johnson City, went home to be with her Lord, on Monday, March 21, 2011 at Pine Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Elizabethton following an extended illness. She was a native of Carter County and was a daughter of the late Michael R. and Lucy Bartee Hardin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-two years, Eustace C. McGuire on February 6, 1990; six sisters, Mabel Forbes, Golda Grindstaff, Mary Hardin, Bessie Blevins, Ina Hardin and Ida Hardin; three brothers, Alex Hardin, Erve Hardin, and Homer Hardin; and a son-in-law, Glen Whaley.

    She was a member of Roan Street Church of God, Elizabethton, and was a former charter member of Unaka Baptist Church, Elizabethton, TN. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend who was affectionately called "Mother" by most of her family and friends. Her love, her humor, and her sparkling personality will be missed by all who knew her.

    Survivors include one daughter, Sonja Whaley of the home; one grandson, Scott Whaley and his wife, Melanie; two granddaughters, Jordan Whaley and Leah Whaley; three step-grandchildren, Holly Thompson, Kasey Bailey, Aaron Oliver, all of Johnson City; nine nieces, Wanda Peters, Norma Carrier and her husband, Gray; Mattie Payne and her husband, Nat; Geraldine Peters and her husband, Meryl; Brenda Vines and her husband, Teddy, Flora Forbes, Shentonta Thomas, Lema Gay Cross and her husband, Harley; Carolyn Pate and her husband, John; six nephews, Hal Blevins, Earl Blevins, Anthony Grindstaff and his wife, Betty, Mickey Hardin, Richard Gray and his wife, Joann; Wilburn Gray and his wife, Ollie; a brother-in-law, Russell McGuire, OH; several great-nieces and great-nephews, several great-great nieces and great-great nephews; several great-great-great nieces and great-great-great nephews; many dear friends, including Cookie Lovelace, Bertie Shankle, Ken and Judy Bewley, Betty and Walter Smith, Homer and Bertie Sims, Jerry and Barbara Livingston, Larry and Joyce Kennedy, Carl and Eunice Estep, Bill and Sue Merritt, Larry and Carolyn Creed, Betty Hardin, Ann Hardin, Earl and Ann Rock, and Ella Jean and Dean Lunceford.

    The funeral service for Leila will be conducted on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 at 7:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, Elizabethton with Rev. Ken Bewley and Rev. Mack Presnell officiating. Music will be under the direction of Rev. Presnell. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6:00 – 7:00 PM Wednesday prior to the service.

    The committal and entombment service will be conducted on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Happy Valley Memorial Park, Mausoleum of Peace. Active pallbearers will be Ed Vanover, Richard Gray, Willie Mathis, Eddie Manning, Richard Estep, Jason Lunceford, Dean Lunceford, and Larry Creed. Honorary pallbearers will be Anthony Grindstaff, Nat Payne, Gray Carrier, David Vanover, Harley Cross, Dr. Jeff Hopland, Dr. Collier Jordan and friends and members of Roan Street Church of God.

    Wanda Hildred "Bee" Grindstaff Peters, 95, of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home.
    She was born in Carter County on April 11, 1922 to the late Elbert C. and Golda Hardin Grindstaff. She lived most of her life in Carter County and attended Unaka High School.
    Wanda was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Elizabethton and also attended Watauga Valley Free Will Baptist Church and Milligan Free Will Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She loved to read her Bible and had read it through many, many times.
    Wanda and her husband operated a local grocery store in the Hunter Community of Stoney Creek for several years. Her hobbies included cross-stitching, embroidering, quilting and playing the piano.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray D. Peters, in 1986; a brother, Sherman A. Grindstaff; two sisters, Rena Vaught and Norma Carrier; three infant sisters; and a son-in-law, Rob Sanders.
    She is survived by two daughters, Sandra Sanders and Gail Bishop and husband Earl; three grandsons, Ed Keesee, Edward Elliott and Benjamin Bishop; two granddaughters, Beth Bennett and husband Billy, and Kimberly Street and husband Brad; one brother, Anthony Grindstaff and wife Betty; one sister, Rita "Mattie" Payne and husband Nat; six great-grandchildren, Casey Street, Savannah Golson, Sarah Elliott, Emma Elliott, Katie Keesee and Luke Keesee; one great-great-granddaughter, River Golson; two step-granddaughters, Robin Lyons and Marnie Childress; four step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
    A graveside service to honor the life of Wanda Peters will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 28, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Jerry Stout officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Bishop, Nat Payne, Sherrell Perry and Warren Widmyer. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home and to Dr. Jonathan Bremer for the loving care you provided our loved one during her stay at Ivy Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice or to the Second Harvest Food Bank, Good Samaritan Ministries or St. Jude Children's Hospital.

    Norma M. Carrier, age 91, celebrated a glorious union with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, December 13, 2014, after a brief illness, at her residence in Kingsport.
    Norma was born in Carter County, TN, on November 12, 1923, to the late Elbert C. and Golda Hardin Grindstaff. She lived most of her life in Carter County, where she grew up, attended Unaka High School, and married and raised her family. She moved to Kingsport, TN, in 2010.
    She attended Stoney Creek Baptist Church during her younger years. She became a member of Watauga Valley Freewill Baptist Church after her marriage in 1940. She served her church well by singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School classes and home Bible studies. She was an exceptional student of the Bible and a gifted teacher of the Word of God.
    She was employed at Raytheon, Bristol, for several years. She was a talented seamstress and was also an excellent cook.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Gray M. Carrier, on September 28, 2012; a daughter, Gwen Widmyer; a brother, Sherman A. Grindstaff; a sister, Rena Vaught; three infant sisters; and a son-in-law, Bill Hammond.
    Survivors include one daughter, Janice Hammond; two grandsons, Brad Hammond and wife, Gloria, and Bart Hammond and wife, Julianne; two granddaughters, Amber Garland and husband, James, and Ginger Shifflett and husband, Paul; two sisters, Wanda Peters, and Mattie Payne and husband, Nat; one brother, Anthony Grindstaff and wife, Betty; ten great-grandchildren, and a son-in-law, Warren Widmyer. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
    A service to honor the life of Norma M. Carrier will be conducted at 12 Noon on Wednesday, December 17th, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Reverend Bill Greer, Reverend Calvin Jett and Dr. James Richardson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Joy Dean Babb, Diana Blevins, Cathy Timbs and Leatha Grindstaff, organist.
    The family will receive friends in the chapel from 11:00 AM-12 Noon on Wednesday, prior to the funeral service.
    The graveside service and interment will follow the funeral service in Wilson Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Sherrill Carrier, Raymond Williams, Jerry "Skip" Campbell, Keith Williams, Mac Collins and Larry Grindstaff. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Pierce, Nat Payne, Earl Bishop, Sherrell Perry, John Hardin, Wayne Dean, Roger Babb, Rick Collins, Leonard Lewis, Larry Peters, Jimmy Peters, Keith Garland, Frank Singleton and Donnie Richardson.
    The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the staff of Amedisys Hospice and to Beth, Donna and Tonya for their care to Norma during her time of need. Special thanks to Frances and Gerald Pigg for every act of kindness shown us. We also thank the many dear ones for their prayers. We are, most of all, grateful to God for His provision of a Savior and the promise of eternal life to all who accept His gift.

    ELIZABETHTON - Rita Grindstaff "Mattie" Payne, 87, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2023 in the Hermitage Health Center. She was born February 11, 1936, in Carter County to the late Elbert Clinton and Golda Mae Hardin Grindstaff. Mattie was a 1954 Graduate of Unaka High School. She was a homemaker. She was an extremely good Pianist and Organist, having played in church for several years. She was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

    Survivors include her husband: Nathaniel C. Payne; one brother and sister-in-law: Henry Anthony & Betty Grindstaff of Bristol, Tenn; also, several special nieces and nephews.

    Mattie will be buried in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Everything will be private.

    LIMESTONE - Shentonta Faye Hardin, 75, Limestone passed away Thursday, May 26, 2022. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Erving Hardin & Juliette Pierce Hardin. She was a 1965 graduate of Unaka High School and East Tennessee State University. Shentonta was a retired Social Worker. She loved spending time with her family, going shopping and reading her Bible. She was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons: Michael Todd Thomas and Clifton Gale “Pooh” Thomas and two grandsons: Kendell Aaron Hartman and Clifton George Thomas.

    Survivors include Three Children: James Craig Thomas & wife Deana, Elizabethton, Cindy R. Thomas and fiance Chris Lowe, Limestone and Fred Raymond Thomas and wife Nikki, Elizabethton. Nine Grandchildren: Juliette Hartman, Landon Thomas, Lucas Thomas, Hayden Hartman, Grace Thomas, Alexus Stover, Abby Richardson, Brooke Jenkins and Allison Eastridge, Her Great Grandchildren: Colton Otto, Carter Otto, Chloe Otto, Callie Otto, Cooper Estep, Carson Estep, Cassidy Estep, Brody Thomas, Saylor Thomas, Stevie Thomas and Noah Woodby.     Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2022 in Memorial Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Blevins Cemetery (Stoney Creek). Vines on April 26, 1966 just days shy of 55 wonderful years. She loved to read her Bible, loved to shop. She attended Sims Hill Christian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughters: Lisa Vines Oliver and Tabitha Vines, her Siblings: Earl Blevins, Ken Blevins, Sherly Blevins Kyte and Geraldine Blevins Peters.

    Survivors include her husband Teddy Vines, a son: Teddy Joe (Robin) Vines, Her Brother: Hal (Linda) Blevins. Her Son-In-Law: Lawrence Oliver. Five Grandchildren: Ronnie (Savanna) Carr, Macey MaChelle Vines (Noah Cole), Teddy Vines III, Joshua Oliver and Kylie Vines. Several Nieces & Nephews. Her Special Friends: Emily Potter Vines.

    Graveside Service will be conducted in the Smith Cemetery (Valley Forge), Elizabethton, Tennessee.

    Sonja D. Whaley, age 79, of Central Community, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2018, at Indian Path Medical Center, after a brief illness.

    Mrs. Whaley was born in Elizabethton and was a daughter of the late Eustace C. and Leila Bell Hardin McGuire. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen Whaley.

    Mrs. Whaley was a member of the Roan Street Church of God. She loved to read her Bible and do crossword puzzles. She also loved taking care of her family and enjoyed watching westerns and taking care of her dog, Rachael.

    Those left to cherish her memory include a son, Scott Whaley and his wife, Melanie, of Johnson City; five grandchildren, Jordan Jackson and her husband, Travis, of Kingsport; Kasey Carpenter and her husband, Chris, of Knoxville; Holly Thompson, of Johnson City; Leah Whaley, of Johnson City; Aaron Oliver of North Carolina; and special relatives and friends, Ella Jean Lunceford and her husband, Dean, Ed and Bessie Vanover, Jean Hart, Jason Lunceford, Mack Presnell, Richard Gray, Nat and Mattie Payne, Tracey Fann, Donna Vanover and Pastor Ken Bewley.

    A service to honor the life of Mrs. Whaley will be conducted on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at 6:30 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Ken Bewley officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 6:30 PM on Wednesday prior to the service.

    The committal and entombment service will be conducted on Thursday, April 26th, 2018, at 11:00 AM in the Mausoleum of Peace, Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Travis Jackson, Chris Carpenter, Logan Clifton, David Fann, J.J. Toms, Jason Lunceford, David Vanover and Tom Holt.
