EMERSON COLE KILLED; RITES FRIDAY AT TEN
Hit-Run Auto Strikes Employee of Local Rayon Mills
Emerson Cole, 26, a resident of the Gap Creek section, was killed last night when he was struck by a hit-run driver, on the Glanzstorff highway near Rio Vista. Butler Wilson, 28, of Rio Vista, who was with Cole, was also struck by the first auto. He suffered a fracture in the right temple, lacerations over the face and small lacerations on the hands. He was treated at the hospital and released.
Cole was hit the second time by an unidentified black sedan as he lay on the highway after Jesse L. Bowery, who first hit him, had gone to call an ambulance. Bowery, driving a couple toward Elizabethton, attempted to halt the hit-run car but was unable to do so.
Cole, an employee of the North American Rayon Corporation, died in a local hospital less than an hour after the unusual accident. He never regained consciousness.
Bowery, who called an ambulance and aided officers in investigating the case, said he struck Cole and Wilson when they were scuffling in the middle of the highway. He said the blinding lights of an approaching auto made it impossible for him to see the young men until it was too late.
C. E. Phillips, proprietor of a nearby filling station, who witnessed the accident, said the two men, had been scuffling in the road for several minutes.
Bowery halted his machine and rushed back to where Cole lay. Wilson was sitting on a bank, Bowery said, and seemed to be dazed. "I then jumped in the car went to the filling station to get aid and call and ambulance. When I got back I saw a car approach and hit Cole. It never stopped," said Bowery.
Lonnie Cole, a brother, said they had been waiting for Emerson to return home from work since three o'clock. Johnson City and Carter County officers and a state highway patrolman have been searching for the driver of the hit-run car.
Cole's injuries consisted of a fractured skull and internal injuries.
He is survived by his father, Frank Cole; his mother; four brothers, Lonnie, Lawrence, Paul, and David; and three sisters, Annie, Vada, and Eva. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow morning at ten o'clock at the Union Cemetery on the Cherokee Road near Johnson City. The Rev. Elijah Plaster will officiate.

Mr. Thomas M. Cole, Sr., 91, Jonesborough, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015, at the Christian Care Center of Johnson City.

Mr. Cole was a deacon and Sunday school teacher in church until his illness did not allow him to attend. He was of the Baptist faith. He told everyone he met of his savior, Jesus Christ, until he could not speak any longer.

Mr. Cole worked for Tennessee Game and Fish for eleven years prior to retiring from the US Postal Service as a rural carrier after thirty years of service. He worked part-time at Morris-Baker for several years.

He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Melvin as a Torpedoman's Mate Third Class during World War II.

He was preceded in death by: his mother, Emily Queen Cole; father, Thomas Jefferson Cole; wife of forty-three years, Bernice Edwards Cole; second wife, Thelma Braswell Cole; one brother, Melvin Cole; and four sisters, Maxie Goodman, Lydia Mae Johnson, Mallie Burleson, and Ruth Chapman.

He is survived by: son, Thomas M. Cole, Jr., and his wife Cathy; twin daughters, Sharon and Karen Cole; four grandchildren, Eric Jones, Kristy Jones, Jeromy Jones, and Nikki Cole Weaver; four great grandchildren, Jennifer Jones, Brandon Jones, and J.T. Steet and Madison Jones; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Cole family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. James Ross, Dr. Michael Bookout, and Dr. William Huddleston, as well as Amedisys Hospice Care and nurses Tracey Ratner, Chris Hughes, Debbie Hinkle, Teresa Sims, and Sara Vines.

The family of Mr. Thomas M. Cole, Sr. will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM Saturday, January 17, 2015, in the Morris-Baker Chapel. The funeral service will follow with Dr. Gene Lasley officiating. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 1 PM Sunday in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be: Shane Morton, Jeromy Jones, Bob Weaver, Brandon Jones, J.T. ELIZABETHTON - U.G. Cole, age 90, of the Stoney Creek community of Elizabethton, passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

He was a son of the late Albert and Amanda Campbell Cole and was born in Carter County on June 2, 1928. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Cole and Massie Cole; two brothers, Spurgeon Cole and Conley Cole; and two sisters, Myrtle Nidiffer and Juanita Hardin.

U.G. retried after twenty-two years from the Carter County Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church, enjoyed listening to gospel and bluegrass music and loved working around his home.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty-five years, Ethel Linville Cole of the home; four sons, Terry Cole of Elizabethton, Willie Cole and Grant Cole, both of N.C. and Randy Cole and his wife, Theresa of Elizabethton; two daughters, Geneva Lauterbach and Barbara Ann Teston and her husband, Jim, all of N.C.; fourteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral/graveside service to honor the life of U.G. Cole will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at the Garland Cemetery in the Stoney Creek Community of Elizabethton.

Arvil Lee Cole, 74, 227 B South Hills Drive, Elizabethton, passed away Monday, October 13, 2008, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Kelly and Lola Grindstaff Cole. He was retired from the American Water Heater. Mr. Cole served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church, Johnson City.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a step-son and a brother.

Survivors include his wife: Wife: Wilma Ingram Cole; A Son: Larry Paul Cole Sr., Elizabethton; A Step-Daughter: Debbie Bryant, Hampton; A Brother: Jerry Cole, Roan Mountain; Three Sisters: Kathleen Harrell, of Florida, and Deseray Markland and Rosa Lea Floyd, of South Carolina; Seven Grandchildren, including Jessica Davis, of California, Larry Paul Cole Jr., Elizabethton, and Joseph Culbert, Johnson City; A Sister-In-Law: Frankie Morrell, Elizabethton; A Brother-In-Law and Sister-in-law: Tommy & Mary Ingram, Elizabethton.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Guinn Cemetery, Simerly Creek.

ELIZABETHTON — Sue Helen Cole Treadway, 78, Elizabethton, died Thursday evening, May 25, 2006 in Hillview Health Care Center.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Laura E. Cole. She resided several years in Jonesborough before returning to Elizabethton. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, R.L. Treadway and an Aunt, Ida Cole.

Survivors include several special cousins and her extended family, members of Calvary Baptist Church.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 2006 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Dr. Joe Sorah officiating. Interment will follow in Monte Vista Burial Park.
