Bertha Loetta Gouge , age 99, of North US Highway 19-E, Cranberry, passed away on Sunday September 5, 2010 at her residence.

A native of Avery County, she was born January 25, 1911 a daughter of the late Mack and Della Ollis Hughes.

For many years her and her late husband, Ernie Gouge, owned and operated the Snack Bar in Cranberry. She was known for her hamburgers and fried bologna sandwiches. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and caring for the sick.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Thomas G. Gouge and Ernie Gouge; her sisters, Tish Sparks, Anna Ollis, Fanny Massy, and Ora Gragg.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, a daughter, Betty Cloninger of Cranberry; son, Thomas Richard Gouge, and his wife, Violet, of Piscataway, NJ; sisters, Georgia Carpenter of Morganton, Elnora Graybill of Cranberry, Aileen Dean of Morganton; brother, Leslie Hughes of New Port News, VA; five grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Bertha Gouge will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at the Grandfather Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Interment and graveside services will follow at the Cranberry Cemetery on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m.

Ora Gragg, 90, of Newland, the Hughes Community, passed away April 24, 2008 at the Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Mack and Della Ollis Hughes. She was a homemaker and caregiver , who enjoyed gardening, flowers, and sewing. Mrs. Gragg was a member of the Mountain View Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Gragg; sisters, Tish Sparks, Fanny Massey, and Anna Ollis.

She is survived by her sons, Rev. Edward Gragg, and his wife, Gladys,of Nashville, TN; Richard Gragg, of Troy, VA; sisters, Aileen Dean and Georgia Carpenter of Morganton, Bertha Gouge of Cranberry, Elnora Graybell of Marion; brother, Rex Hughes of Hampton, VA; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1919, in Avery County, NC, to the late Mack Hughes and Della Ollis Hughes.

She was preceded in death by her Parents; Husband: Auttie Carpenter; Son: Wayne Carpenter; seven sisters and one brother.

Georgia was a member of Mt. View Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening and anything to do with flowers.

Elnora Graybeal, age 92, of Newland passed away on April 1, 2015 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

A native of Avery County, she was born September 11, 1922 a daughter of the late Mack and Della Ollis Hughes.

She was a devout and dedicated member of the Mountain View Free Will Baptist Church on Lick Log, where she taught Sunday School, worked with the Summer Bible School, served as Treasurer, traveled and sang with the church choir. She enjoyed gardening and arts and crafts.

Along with her parents, Elnora was preceded in death by her sisters, Tish Sparks, Anna Ollis, Bertha Gouge, Fannie Massey, Ora Gragg, Aleene Deen; brother, Rex Leslie Hughes.

Elnora has left to cherish her memory her son, Charles Graybeal, and his wife, Linda, of Kingsland, GA; sister, Georgie Carpenter of Morganton; grandchildren, Stephanie Firestone, Cheryl Tveras, Gary Osburn; great granddaughter, Olivia; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.

Funeral services for Elnora Graybeal will be conducted on Monday, April 6, 2015 at 10:00 am at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Russell Hoilman officiating. Interment will follow in the Slippery Hill Cemetery.

HAMPTON - Rex Leslie Hughes, 85, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at the VA Medical Center in Hampton. He was a native of Frank, N.C., and a resident of Hampton since 1951. He was a member of the Mountain View Freewill Baptist Church.
As a teenager, Rex began working in the conservation corp before joining the Army in 1943. During his military career he was a heavy machine gunner and squad leader and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. During the many battles between the borders of France and Germany, Rex became a POW of the German army in 1945. After leaving the military, he began work at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock as a shipfitter in the X11 Department, and retired in the 1980's after a career spanning more than 30 years.
Rex is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Marie Hughes, and six sisters.
He is survived by his sons, Hubert J. Hughes and wife, Sara, Larry M. Hughes and wife, Carrington, and Allen K. Hughes and partner, Dwayne; his grandchildren, Angela Stevens, Jason Hughes, Heather Hughes, Courtney Gonzalez-Vega, Allen K. Hughes II, and Lesli A. Hughes; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Parklawn– Wood Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Bert Rait. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.

Marietta "Bud" Pittman Hughes, age 91, of Linville, North Carolina passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at her residence surrounded by three generations of her family.
Marietta was born on February 2, 1930 in Avery County, NC, a daughter of the late Claude Pittman and the late Eula Clark Pittman.

She, along with her husband, Jim, owned and operated the Pixie Motel in Linville for many years, she loved cooking and baking and above all being a homemaker, providing a loving and caring home for her family. She was a member of the Eastern Star and a life long Republican.

In addition to her parents, Bud was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, James Frank Hughes, Sr.; brother, Charles Pittman, and a grandson, David Lee Hughes.

Charles Evans Pittman, 76, of Pineola, North Carolina passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017 at his residence.

He was born on March 12, 1941 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Claude Pittman and the late Eula Clark Pittman.

Charles graduated from Cranberry High School, where he played on the football team. In 1971 He and his wife, Linda, started Pittman Nursery in Pineola. He was a member of the Linville Masonic Lodge and the Frank Presbyterian Church. He was a former Elder of the Pineola Presbyterian Church and was a Charter Member of the Fellowship Presbyterian Church in Crossnore. Charles enjoyed fishing, watching the Atlanta Braves Baseball, and was a proud former member of the Lick Log Hogs Softball Team.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a Son-In-Law, Tim Nelson.

Charles was a good neighbor and friend. Patsy ("Pat") Pittman Woodcock, age 78, of Black Mountain, entered her Heavenly Home peacefully at her residence on Thursday, July 29th, 2021.

Pat was raised in Minneapolis, NC, where she graduated a year early from Cranberry High School. She went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Health and Physical Education at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. Her first teaching opportunity was at Charles D. Owen High School in Swannanoa, NC, where she taught Health and Physical Education and coached the JV Girls Basketball team and was the Assistant Coach of the Girls Varsity Basketball team. Teaching and coaching were her passions, and she was recently inducted into the Western North Carolina Hall of Fame for her part in leading the Warlassies to an over one hundred game winning streak.

It was while she was teaching in Swannanoa that she met the love of her life and best friend, John Max Woodcock, Jr. She married him in a small ceremony at Frank Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis in August of 1965. Later she worked with John in the office of the Woodcock Ford dealership for many years, before they sold the business and retired in 1997. For nearly 55 years, the couple was virtually inseparable, and they divided their time between Black Mountain and a second home in Hilton Head Island, SC. Pat loved travelling, and she was proud of the fact that she and John had visited every continent in the world except for Antarctica. She was an avid reader, and spent many happy hours with her nose in a book. Pat loved to cook for her family and friends and insisted on making every meal special and elegant. As a young woman, she taught her daughters basketball and tennis, and made sure they had a good foundation in exercise and sports. Pat endured a number of physical challenges but accepted the challenges cheerfully and with good humor and overcame each of them with grace, strength and dignity. Pat will be remembered fondly due to her unbreakable spirit, her ready smile, and the kindness and love she showed to everyone who entered her circle.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Claude Herbert Pittman and Eula Clarke Pittman; her sister, Marietta ("Bud") Hughes; and her brother, Charles Pittman.

She will be remembered lovingly and fondly by her husband, John Max Woodcock, Jr.; daughter Julia Woodcock Dennis (Sean); daughter Mary Jane Woodcock Bernard; sister Jeanne Pittman Jennings; grandson Max Reid Bernard; and Zoie, her beautiful and beloved Cockapoo.

The family will have a private ceremony.

Stokes Allen "Stoker" Hughes slipped into eternity on September 8, 2021 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk after a lengthy illness.

Born July 17, 1934 he was the son of the late Roy and Mary Lou (Granny) Callahan Hughes. He was a member of The Minneapolis Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Al Hughes, sister Jacqueline Coffey, Son Brady Lee Hughes, Nephew John Coffey and first cousin Reverend Reed Callahan.

He is survived by his son, Allen Hughes and wife, Sheila; two grandchildren, Tessarai Powers and Chazz Hughes; three great - grandchildren, Stokes Powers, Jasper Powers and River Hughes. He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

"Uncle Stoker "was fiercely independent, and was once referred to as the "original hippie" by one of his former students. He wore many hats in his lifetime; timber cutter, pipeline welder, auto assembly line worker, school teacher (primarily at Cranberry High School) elementary school principal, Department of Social Services case worker and even pulled a short stint as County Manager. He became proficient at arts and crafts making slingshots, grapevine wreaths, birch limb baskets and thousands of feet of Christmas garland.

His last official job was instructing inmates in achieving their GED through Mayland Technical College. His hobbies prior to declining health were gardening, fishing, playing cards and scrabble. He is fondly remembered by many of his former students and co-workers who loved his wit and dry sense of humor.

He attended too many universities to mention, but finally earned his BS degree from Appalachian State University and attended graduate school at The University of Tennessee.

Many thanks to his caregivers over the last several years, Wayne Martin, Bill and Donna Tate, Robert Clark, Julia Sherrill, Sara Seaver and the staff at The Baker Clinic. Thanks also to the volunteers at The Avery Senior Center including John Sturgill, Buffy Clark, Becky Corrigan, and to The High Country Community Health staff including his final cna Elaine Buchanan.

Services for Stokes Hughes will be held on Sunday, September 12, 2021 beginning at 3:00 pm from the Minneapolis Methodist Church with Pastor David Hobson and Pastor Robert "Buzz" Beers officiating.

The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 pm on Sunday at Minneapolis Methodist Church.

Interment will be in the Slippery Hill Cemetery.
