    Bertha Loetta Gouge , age 99, of North US Highway 19-E, Cranberry, passed away on Sunday September 5, 2010 at her residence.

    A native of Avery County, she was born January 25, 1911 a daughter of the late Mack and Della Ollis Hughes.

    For many years her and her late husband, Ernie Gouge, owned and operated the Snack Bar in Cranberry. She was known for her hamburgers and fried bologna sandwiches. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and caring for the sick.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first and second husbands, Thomas G. Gouge and Ernie Gouge; her sisters, Tish Sparks, Anna Ollis, Fanny Massy, and Ora Gragg.

    She leaves behind to cherish her memory, a daughter, Betty Cloninger of Cranberry; son, Thomas Richard Gouge, and his wife, Violet, of Piscataway, NJ; sisters, Georgia Carpenter of Morganton, Elnora Graybill of Cranberry, Aileen Dean of Morganton; brother, Leslie Hughes of New Port News, VA; five grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

    Funeral services for Bertha Gouge will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at the Grandfather Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until the service hour Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

    Interment and graveside services will follow at the Cranberry Cemetery on Wednesday morning at 11:00 a.m.

    A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Mack and Della Ollis Hughes. She was a homemaker and caregiver , who enjoyed gardening, flowers, and sewing. Mrs. Gragg was a member of the Mountain View Freewill Baptist Church.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Gragg; sisters, Tish Sparks, Fanny Massey, and Anna Ollis.

    She is survived by her sons, Rev. Edward Gragg, and his wife, Gladys,of Nashville, TN; Richard Gragg, of Troy, VA; sisters, Aileen Dean and Georgia Carpenter of Morganton, Bertha Gouge of Cranberry, Elnora Graybell of Marion; brother, Rex Hughes of Hampton, VA; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her Parents; Husband: Auttie Carpenter; Son: Wayne Carpenter; seven sisters and one brother.

    Georgia was a member of Mt. View Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening and anything to do with flowers.

    Georgia leaves behind to cherish her memory her two Daughters: Jean Barksdale of Morganton, NC, and Tammy Brandon of Morganton, NC; Four Granddaughters: Barbie (Eric) Sebens of Champagne, Ill., Brieanna Brandon of Morganton, NC, Stacey Burleson of Roan Mountain, Tenn., and Priscilla (Wade) McGuire of Cranberry, NC; Two Grandsons: Steve Rader of Morganton, NC, and Drew Brandon of Boone, NC; Seven Great Grandchildren: Chelsey Lajara, Lexi Sebens, Lyndsey Carpenter, Caleb McGuire, Amanda McGuire, Michael Burleson and Morgan Burleson; along with several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday June 6, 2018, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Vince Wilson officiating.

    Elnora Graybeal, age 92, of Newland passed away on April 1, 2015 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

    A native of Avery County, she was born September 11, 1922 a daughter of the late Mack and Della Ollis Hughes.

    She was a devout and dedicated member of the Mountain View Free Will Baptist Church on Lick Log, where she taught Sunday School, worked with the Summer Bible School, served as Treasurer, traveled and sang with the church choir. She enjoyed gardening and arts and crafts.

    Along with her parents, Elnora was preceded in death by her sisters, Tish Sparks, Anna Ollis, Bertha Gouge, Fannie Massey, Ora Gragg, Aleene Deen; brother, Rex Leslie Hughes.

    Elnora has left to cherish her memory her son, Charles Graybeal, and his wife, Linda, of Kingsland, GA; sister, Georgie Carpenter of Morganton; grandchildren, Stephanie Firestone, Cheryl Tveras, Gary Osburn; great granddaughter, Olivia; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.

    Funeral services for Elnora Graybeal will be conducted on Monday, April 6, 2015 at 10:00 am at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Russell Hoilman officiating. Interment will follow in the Slippery Hill Cemetery.

    HAMPTON - Rex Leslie Hughes, 85, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at the VA Medical Center in Hampton. He was a native of Frank, N.C., and a resident of Hampton since 1951. He was a member of the Mountain View Freewill Baptist Church.
    As a teenager, Rex began working in the conservation corp before joining the Army in 1943. During his military career he was a heavy machine gunner and squad leader and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. During the many battles between the borders of France and Germany, Rex became a POW of the German army in 1945. After leaving the military, he began work at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock as a shipfitter in the X11 Department, and retired in the 1980's after a career spanning more than 30 years.
    Rex is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Marie Hughes, and six sisters.
    He is survived by his sons, Hubert J. Hughes and wife, Sara, Larry M. Hughes and wife, Carrington, and Allen K. Hughes and partner, Dwayne; his grandchildren, Angela Stevens, Jason Hughes, Heather Hughes, Courtney Gonzalez-Vega, Allen K. Hughes II, and Lesli A. Hughes; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters.
    The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Parklawn– Wood Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Bert Rait. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.

She was survived by a son, Ray Dean (Hazel); daughters, Sandy Dean Richey (Steve), Judy Dean Orders (Allen) and Sheila Dean; grandchildren, Michael Branch (Misty), Justin Orders (Stephanie) and Nicky Metts; great-grandchildren, Kendall Paige Branch, Peyton Orders, Greyson Orders, Kendall Trey Metts and Kandice Abshire; great-great-grandchildren, Kaydance, McKenzie and Brody; brother, Leslie Hughes; sisters, Elnora Graybeal and Georgia Carpenter; and an extended family of relatives. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where her funeral was held on Steptember 9, 2010, with The Rev. Larry Thompson officiatting.

    Herman O. Sparks passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on the morning of March 5, 2010. He was 86 years old.

    Herman was a loving and devoted husband and father, who worked hard to take care of his family. He was employed with Ralph Huskey Plumbing for 25 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherfield and Tish Sparks.

    Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Joyce Sparks; together they had two daughters, Annette Compton and husband, David, and Barbara Scott and husband, Brian. He was the grandfather of two granddaughters, Christina and Kimberly; together they gave him five great-grandchildren.

    Herman Sparks was loved dearly and will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

    The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at noon, Monday, March 8, in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
