    Ellis Coffey Gragg, 90, of Route 1, Blowing Rock, died Friday, April 15, 1994 at Life Care Center in Banner Elk.

    She was born July 10, 1903, in Avery County to the late Richmond and Etta Hayes Coffey. She waas also preceded in death by her husband, Walter R. Gragg; four brothers, Fred Coffey, Edgar Coffey, Dallas Coffey and Donald Coffey; and four sisters, Queen Gragg, Agnes Coffey, Ennis Coffey and Exie Coffey.

    Mrs. Gragg was a homemaker and a member of New Hopewell Baptist Church.

    Survivors include five daughters, Ruth Gragg and Irene McGuire, both of Lenoir, Ethel Johnson of Vilas, Aloma Osborne, of Blowing Rock and Rachel Norwood of Banner Elk; three sons, Rome Gragg of Waterford, Mich., Howard Gragg and Dallas Gragg, both of Blowing Rock; two sisters, Dollie Gragg of Lenoir and Neta Gragg of Hudson; 32 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

    The funeral is 2 p.m. today at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel in Boone with the Revs. Gary Gragg and Darrell Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Gragg Family Cemetery in Avery County.

    Dollie Coffey Gragg, 102, of Walsh Road, Lenoir, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

    She was born March 8, 1904, in Avery County to the late Richmond and Etta Mae Hayes Coffey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil C. Gragg; four sons, Homer Gragg, Troy Gragg, Richard Gragg and Lockwood Gragg; a daughter, Jessie St. Clair and two grandsons, Jack and Mike Greene.

    Mrs. Gragg was a homemaker and a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church.

    Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Arvil and Ann Gragg of Newport News, Virginia, Charles and Winnie Gragg of Patterson, Kenneth and Doris Gragg of Abilene, Texas, and Tony and Cathy Gragg of Lenoir; 27 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

    Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 2, 2006, at 2 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Jerry Reeves. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

    The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.

    Serving as pallbearers will be: Gary Gragg, Eddie Gragg, Allen Gragg, Kevin Gragg, Dennis Gragg, Jonathan Gragg and Joseph Gragg.

    Jack Coffey, age 87, of Linville Falls, NC passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2019, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk, NC.

    He was born on Sept. 4, 1931, in Avery County, NC. He graduated from Newland High School in 1949 and received his Masters in Education from Appalachian State University. Jack served his country in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959.

    Jack received his Doctorate of Education at Highland University in Maryville, Tenn. He taught at Lees-McRae College for 29 years, where he received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award in 1976, as well as the title "Professor Emeritus" in 1999. Jack was a trained Emergency Medical Technician and had received numerous awards and acknowledgements for his volunteer service with Avery County.

    He was trained as a Lay Pastor with the United Methodist Church and was a member of the Pisgah United Methodist Church. Jack was a friend to all and loved to serve Jesus and the community he lived in.

    He was preceded in death by his Parents: Henry and Essie Townsend Coffey.

    Jack leaves behind to cherish his memory his Wife of 62 years: Barbara Dennie Coffey of Linville Falls, NC; God-Son: Cameron Duckworth; God-Son: Casey Duckworth; Sister: Peggy Hamlin of Linville Falls, NC; Sister: Annis Sherwood of Port Deposit, Md.; and Several Nieces and Nephews.

    Funeral Services for Jack Coffey were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 1, 2019, at the Pisgah United Methodist Church, with Rhonda Campbell and Terry Duckworth officiating. Interment followed in the Pisgah Cemetery. The family received friends at the church on Monday beginning at 1 p.m. Pallbearers were Roy Lee Dennie, Cory Hoyes, Casey Duckworth, Tommy Duff, David Yeater, Cameron Duckworth and Logan Guinn. Honorary Pallbearers were Mark Stout, Danny Guinn, Jimmy Guinn and Frank Guinn.

    The family would like to thank the staff and therapists at Life Care Center of Banner Elk and thank their church family at Pisgah United Methodist.
