    Mr. Virgil Avery "Byrd" McGuire, 80, of Route 2, Banner Elk, died Saturday, May 1, at his home.

    He was a native of Watauga County but had spent most of his life in Avery County. He was the son of the late Richard William and Lucy Louarty McGuire. He was retired from Banner Elk Hardware.

    Survivors include three daughters, Doris McGuire Heaton and Betty McGuire Roberts, both of Banner Elk, and Bernice McGuire Buchanan of Minneapolis, N.C.; three sisters, Violet Young of Sunbright, Tenn., Julia Oliver of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Annie Tester of Banner Elk; and three brothers, George McGuire of Banner Elk, Lee McGuire of Wilson and Keseler McGuire of Elizabethton, Tenn. Seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Floy Dollars McGuire, and a son, Mr. Melton Lawrence McGuire.

    Services were Sunday evening at the Grandfather Chapel of the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Newland with the Rev. Harold Dellinger officiating. Interment and graveside service followed Monday morning at the Valley Haven Cemetery.

    Virgil married Floy Dollar about 1934. Floy was born on 2 May 1915; died on 2 Nov 1988; was buried in Valley Haven Baptist Church Cemetery, , Avery County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
