    JOHNSON CITY - Lieutenant Colonel Laura E. Fulkerson, US Army, Ret., 88, of Johnson City, departed this life on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

    She was born in Hawkins County on July 26, 1929 and was the fifth child to the late Tom and Cornelia Fulkerson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

    Laura graduated from Swift Memorial Junior College in 1951 and from Freedman's School of Nursing at Howard University in 1955. She worked in public health nursing after graduation and later joined the US Air Force, from which she was sent to the Philippine Islands, and later retired after twenty-three years from the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after the Vietnam era. She was also a charter member of Women's Memorial in Washington D.C.

    Laura was a member of AME Zion Church where she served as a deaconess, secretary of the Sunday school, Willing Workers Club, Women's Service Club, and senior choir and enjoyed working with them as long as she was able to do so.

    Those left to cherish Laura's memory include: sisters, Hazel Miller and Ellen Jenkins; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

    The family will gather to receive friends on Monday, April 23, 2018 from 12:00 PM until a celebration of life service beginning at 1:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services, Johnson City with Rev. Charles Hawkins officiating. Following the service, a committal and interment will be held at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 2:30 PM.
