    Notes:

    GRAY - Emily Matherly Sluss, 81, Gray, a loving wife and companion, went to be with the Lord onTuesday, July 10, 2018. She was the daughter of World War I veteran Walter Henry Matherly, who was deployed in France at this point in time 100 years ago.

    He and her mother Olivia Jane Crouch Matherly preceded her to Heaven, along with her sisters Virginia Matherly Glass and Gladys Matherly Wexler. Emily was descended from early pioneers of Washington County, TN who were Revolutionary War soldiers; Jesse Crouch, Jessee Duncan and Kinchen Kelly. Emily is survived by her husband of 57 years, Lowell Sluss and little companion Gracie. She is also survived by four nieces, Carolyn Hodges, Ruth Ann Willis, Betty Widener and Joyce Tiller; five nephews, David Wexler, Charles (Shorty) Glass, Kenneth Glass, Gary Glass and Mike Glass and two cousins, James (Bluegill) Matherly and Iva Lee Crouch Adams; two special great nieces, Jennifer Hodges and Kimberly Edwards.

    Emily was a public school teacher earning her degrees from East Tennessee State Teachers College. She accompanied her husband from duty station to duty station teaching school in Washington County, TN, Forestville, MD, Nashville public schools, and Camp Lejeune Base elementary school. She completed her career in Johnson City, TN at Town Acres from 1973-1995. Emily especially loved her little pets who gave her love and companionship. They were Shannon, Inky, Heidi and the present one Gracie.

    A special thank you to caregivers Monica Mitchell and Alishia A.J. Heatherly, who attended Emily at home. The family is indebted to those who conduct the services, Dr. Gene Lasley, Rev. Toonie Cash, Rev. Gary Seaman and Appalachian Funeral Home. Also a special thanks to neighbors, friends and family for their flowers, food, and support during Emily's illness.

    The funeral service will be conducted Friday, July 13, 2018, at 7PM in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5PM to 7PM prior to the service. The graveside committal service will be conducted Saturday, July 14, 2018, at Boones Creek Baptist Church Cemetery at 10AM. Pallbearers will be Sam Widener, Charles (Shorty) Glass, Mike Glass, Gary Glass, Ben Edwards and William Edwards.

    Emily married Master Sergeant Lowell Aaron Sluss in Dec 1961. Lowell (son of Living and Living) was born on 8 Dec 1936 in McDowell County, , , West Virginia; died on 22 Dec 2021 in Washington County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Boones Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, , Washington County, Tennessee.
