Mrs. Nellie R. Broyles, 74, Rt. 3, Elizabethton, died at her residence at 12:30 p.m. Monday of an apparent heart attack.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Dan and Edna Holloway McGhee and was a member of the Fish Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Comer Broyles; two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Norma) Sheffield of Elizabethton, and Mrs. Larry (Edith) Scalf of Watauga; eight sons, Fred, Robert, Floyd, Dewey, Raymond, Haskel, Conley and Preston Broyles, all of Elizabethton; and Beryl Broyles, Abingdon, Va.; and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Crabtree of Hampton, and Mrs. Robert (Rose) Oliver of Elizabethton. Sixteen grandchildren, Terry, David, Tim, Diane, Regina, Teresa, Sheila, Haskel Wayne, Kelly and Kristi Broyles, Sara Sheffield, Donna Merritt, Allen, Keith, Chris and Cindy Scalf, also survive.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Earl Campbell and Rev. Hubert Greene officiating. Interment will be in the Crumley Cemetery, Rt. 3, Bluff City.

Mrs. Gertrude Hammond, soloist, will be in charge of the music. Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. E. T. Pearson, Bob Reynolds, Jerome Daugherty and the Men's Class of Harmony Baptist Church.

Nellie married Henry Comer Broyles about 1928 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Henry (son of Henry L. Broyles and Senie E. (Broyles)) was born on 11 Oct 1908 in Scott County, , , Virginia; died on 7 May 1985 in Washington County, , , Virginia; was buried in Crumley Cemetery. Sullivan County, , , Tennessee. Notes:

Fred Lewis Broyles, 1009 Circle Drive, Elizabethton, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Henry Comer and Nellie Ruth McGhee Broyles.

He was a former co-owner of Tom and Fred's Garage. Following retirement, he was employed by Austin's Garage for a number of years. Mr. Broyles was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church, but attended First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton where he was a member of the Darold White Sunday School class. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Erma Peters Broyles; a son, Terry Broyles, Elizabethton; two sisters, Norma Sheffield, Elizabethton, and Edith Scalf, Watauga; seven brothers, Conley, Preston, Raymond, Floyd, Dewey and Haskel Broyles, all of Elizabethton, and Burl Broyles, Abingdon, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the First Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Greer, Rev. Phil Poston and Rev. Elmer Carter officiating. Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from members of the Darold White Sunday School class.

Fred married Erma Lou Peters on 1 Oct 1955 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Erma (daughter of Anderson Hampton Peters and Anna Pearl Taylor) was born about 1936 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 20 Mar 2018 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Happy Valley Memorial Park, , Carter County, Tennessee.
