    ELIZABETHTON - Herbert H. Curde, age 88, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 7, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center, following an extended illness. Herbert was born in Carter County to the late Alvin and Pearl Feathers Curde. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Hall and Ruth DeSilvey; and two brothers, Ted Curde and James C. Curde.

    Herbert was a United States Air Force veteran, where he served as a military policeman and he retired from the Elizabethton Electric System after 42 years of service. He was a member of Brick Christian Church, where he was an elder. Herbert loved farming, gardening and never knew a stranger, he was always willing to help others. He was an avid UT sports fan and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. But most importantly, was the love of his life, Ardith.

    Those left to cherish his memory include the love of his life and his wife of 67 years, Ardith Hyder Curde, of the home; two daughters, Patti Buck and husband Keith, of Johnson City and Mikki Morrell and husband Ned, of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Shannon Banner, of Johnson City, Cody Buck, of Johnson City, Brookney Morrell and Brandi Morrell, both of Kingsport; one great grandson, Brayln Banner; one brother, Frank Curde, of Elizabethton; one sister, Grace Bellott, of Memphis, TN; and a brother-in-law, Bill Hyder. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

    A service to honor and celebrate the life of Herbert H. Curde will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 10, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Ernie Depew, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Ned Morrell, Nathan Morrell, Neal Morrell and Jennifer Trent. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday or at the residence of a daughter, Patti Buck, at other times.

    The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 11, 2018 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Keith Buck, Ned Morrell, Cody Buck, Gary Hyder, Tommy Bellott and DeJuane Sheffield. Honorary pallbearers will be former co-workers of Elizabethton Electric System and members of Brick Christian Church.

    PINEY FLATS - Loretta Curd Smith, 87, of Piney Flats, TN passed away on November 19, 2019.

    Born in Watauga, TN, she was the daughter of the late Spencer Rodney Curd and the late Cora Lee Fair Curd. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Patsy Curd, three brothers, Charles, Tony Wren and Clinton Dewayne Curd and one sister-in-law Sandra Curd.

    She was a member of Poplar Ridge Christian Church. Loretta was a Tupperware manager for 32 years. She LOVED TO TALK and to meet new people. She loved to cook and loved making bread and cakes for other people. She had many friends and she believed in telling she loved them while they were living.

    She is survived by her loving husband and best friend Herman S. Smith; three sons, Chip Smith of Piney Flats, TN, Jeffrey Smith of Spring Hill, TN and Tony Smith of Jessup, MD; five grandchildren, Timmy, Emily, Grace Smith, Joshua and Anastasia Smith; two great grandchildren Rachael and Madison Smith, one sister-in-law, Kim Curd and several nieces and nephews. She also loved the children she babysat. They called her "Mimi" and she called them her adopted grandchildren; Gavin Grizzle, Rachel Hamilton, Kimberlyn and Jonathan King, Josh and Jonathan Gregory.

    The family will receive friends on Friday, November 22, 2019 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 11:00 am in the Poplar Ridge Cemetery.

    WATAUGA - Larry Roger Hammons, 80, Watauga, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Elizabethton, TN, following an extended illness.
    Larry was born in Carter County to the late Fred and Geneva Campbell Hammons.
    Larry graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1960. He continued his education at Milligan College. Then he went on to proudly serve in the United States Air Force. Next, Larry worked for Hoffmann Aircraft and then Sunshine biscuits, Inc in Lenexa, KS.
    In June of 1969, Larry met the love of his life, Linda, at Watauga Christian Church. On August 15, 1970, Larry and Linda were married and began a very blessed life together. Life brought Larry and Linda to central Illinois, where he worked for Swift and Co. Larry attended Johnson University (Bible College) graduating in 1975. He pastored and preached in Mississippi, South Carolina, Illinois and Tennessee. He loved to tell everyone that the Lord loved them. Larry worked several positions before going to work for the City of Elizabethton as quality control for the water department. He retired in 2004 after 13 years.
    In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by: one infant brother; one cousin, Robert Campbell; one sister-in-law, Nilah Groves Mills; and one brother-in-law, Charles Brubaker.
    Survivors include: his wife of 51 years, Linda Lee Hammons; two sons, Roger Hammons and his wife Sarah and Daniel Hammons and his wife Stephanie; two grandchildren, Alexis Norris and her husband Justin, and Chesnee Hammons; two great grandchildren, Knox and Nash; one sister, Gail Brubaker; nieces and nephews, Chris Brubaker and his wife Carrie, Michael Brubaker and his wife Jennifer, Sarah Woods and her husband Ben and nine great nieces and nephews; niece, Jennifer Schmale, and sons, Abe Schmale and his wife Hannah and Jacob Schmale; special cousins, Jana Lisa Hicks and her husband Dennis, Kristen Campbell and son Gabe , Kendra Hicks, Joey Campbell and his wife Paula and Jeffrey Campbell. And many cousins.
    The family would like to thank all the CNAs at Hillview Home Care, especially Bridget Fletcher and Teresa Baines, recently the nurses at Sycamore Shoals, and Dr. Ronald Blackmore and his staff. Also, all the caregivers that have been involved in Larry’s care for their tremendous care and treatment given to Larry throughout his eleven-year illness. Also, a special thank you to all the prayer warriors that have shown such kindness and support during these difficult times. Larry’s Saturday morning prayer group and everyone at Frist Christian Church, thank you for your prayers.

    JOHNSON CITY - Vickie Lynn Wikle, 73, of Johnson City died Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at Fort Sanders Hospital in Knoxville. She was a native of Johnson City, daughter of the late Ralph Eugene and Hazel Marie Shell Smith.

    Vickie was a registered nurse and spent most of her career at Baptist Hospital in Knoxville, TN. She graduated from the Diploma Program at Baptist and later received a BS degree from Tusculum University. Vickie was known for her cooking and baking, she generously shared with coworkers, friends and family. Vickie was also an avid sports fan who strongly supported the Tennessee Vols.

    After caring for her husband for several years, Vickie returned to Johnson City to care for her sister. Vickie shared her love of canning with her aunt, Betty Grindstaff. The two spent many days canning together and sharing with family and friends. Vickie attended Southside Baptist Church.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Wikle, a sister, Patty Howell and sister-in-law, Phyllis Smith.

    Survivors include her brothers, Joe Smith and Dana Smith (Robin); brother-in-law Chris Howell; her aunt Betty Grindstaff; best friend June Hubbs; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many other special friends and coworkers.

    The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 31, 2022, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm in the Dogwood Chapel at Morris-Baker. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm under the direction of Chaplain Dan Hix and Pastor Randy Lester. Vickie and her husband Joe will be interred at Mt. Home National Cemetery together at a later date.
