    JOHNSON CITY - Joan Darden, 88, Johnson City, died Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital, following a short illness.

    She was born Polly Joan Harrell, on August 28, 1932, in Bulladean, NC, the 4th child of Iss and Frances Street Harrell.

    Joan graduated from Science Hill High School and attended East Tennessee State University. She worked many years for Randolph Anderson at Anderson Realty. In 1973, she joined her husband Tommy in opening and operating Darden’s Clothiers, which sold finer menswear and women’s clothing. Joan loved prom season and fashion shows. She was an active member of Munsey Memorial Methodist Church and the Virgil Anderson Sunday School Class.

    In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas “Tommy” Malcolm Darden Sr.in 2017, brother, Henry Harrell, sisters, Florence Elrod, and Ethel Foister.

    Joan is survived by her son, Dr. Thomas M. Darden Jr. and wife Carla Jones Darden of Albany, GA; grandchildren, Grace Darden, Patrick (Becca) Miller, Cole Miller, Alec Miller; sisters, Mary Lee Smith, Lena (Romley) Wallace; brothers, Bill (Jackie) Harrell, Bobby (Alice) Harrell; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews on the Darden and Harrell sides of the family.

    The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 S. Roan St. Johnson City, with The Reverend Michael Lester and The Reverend Douglas Grove-DeJarnett, officiating. Interment will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Patrick Miller, Cole Miller, Alec Miller, Bill Darden, Steve Darden and Dwight Harrell. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Harrell, Bill Harrell, Major General Gary L. Harrell US Army (retired), Harold Dean Foister, Bob Ross.

    JONESBOROUGH - Bobby Gene Harrell, 86 of Jonesborough, TN passed away Friday, December 23, 2022 after a lengthy illness at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.

    He was born in Mitchell County, NC and moved to Johnson City when he was 3 years old. Bobby graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1954. After graduation, he began working with Earnest Clark, who taught him the trade of construction. One winter when work was slow, he and Mr. Clark volunteered their time for some repairs to the building where they attended church at Antioch Baptist Church. After a few years of learning the trade under Mr. Clark, he and his brother, Henry, began Harrell Brothers Construction Company. Harrell Brothers had a much-respected reputation and was a successful business in the area; they continued building houses for 45 years throughout Johnson City. During that time, they also built the parsonage for Antioch Baptist Church, and built an addition onto the Church in the 1970’s.

    Bobby was a lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church, where he was saved at the age of 13 and was baptized in the local creek. He served in numerous positions, including Deacon, Trustee, Sunday School teacher, building and grounds committee, budget committee and others. One of the things he and his wife, Alice did in their later years that brought them a great amount of joy was working with the Senior Adults, affectionately known as the Young at Heart. They planned numerous trips and outings like Nova Scotia, the Amish Country and a trip out west to California and other states.

    Bobby was the son of the late Issador Harrell and Frances Street Harrell. He was preceded in death by one brother, Henry and three sisters, Florence Elrod, Ethel Foister and Joan Darden.

    He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Alice Krell Harrell; two children, Dwight Harrell and his wife, Regina and Renee Roach; three grandchildren, Caleb Harrell (Lauren), Bobby Adams and Amanda Roach; three great-grandchildren, Baylor, Berkley and Coleson Harrell; He is also survived by one brother, Bill Harrell (Jackie); two sisters, Mary Lee Smith and Lena Wallace (Romley); Several nephews and nieces, including a special great-niece, Briley Rowe, whom he dearly loved; Bobby is also survived by two special friends, Debbie Bradford and Andrew Nivens, as well as a special brother-in-law, Larry Krell and a special sister-in-law, Mary Brown. A very heart-felt Thank You to the Doctors and staff on the 4300 wing at JCMCH who were so caring and compassionate.

    A Celebration of Life Service for Bobby Gene Harrell will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, December 30, 2022 with Visitation to be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM prior to the service at Antioch Baptist Church, 1014 Antioch Road, Johnson City, TN 37604. Reverend Pete Tackett and Reverend Richard Long will officiate the service. Interment will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Monte Vista Burial Park.

    JOHNSON CITY - Nancy Bea Gibson, 81, of Johnson City ascended into Heaven on Wednesday, December 14, 2017.

    She was born in Mitchell County, NC to the late Earl and Nada Harrell. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Kelly Thomas Gibson and her siblings, A.J. Harrell, Don Harrell, Hazel Lewis and Jean Goode.

    Nancy was a member of Munsey United Methodist Church where she particularly enjoyed the contemporary services. Nancy's first real job was that of a proud United Sates Army wife, accompanying her husband to to a variety of posts including Wiesbaden, Germany, Fort Richardson, Alaska and Fort Benning, GA where they raised their family. Nancy's passion led her to enjoy numerous positions within social services occupations. Nancy retired in 2016 from the Southern Appalachian Ronald McDonald House where she served as a weekend house manager and volunteer for 15 years. Prior to her service with SARMH, Nancy was a beloved member of the Safe Passage Domestic Violence Shelter staff. Nancy was honored to participate in the VA Mountain Home "No Veteran Dies Alone" program.

    Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Ginger Medlock and husband Steve of Gray, TN, Connie Spence and husband Hugh of Arlington, Texas and grandchildren Elizabeth Spence of Arlington, TX and Chandler Spence and wife Kimberly of Nashville, TN.

    The family will gather to receive friends on Tuesday, December, 19, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. until a celebration of Nancy's life beginning at 1:00 p.m., at Tetrick Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Johnson City with Pastor Michael Lester officiating. A graveside service will follow at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Those who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 2:20 p.m. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

    Nancy's daughters wish to thank the entire staff of The Courtyards Senior Living Facility in Johnson City, the Wellmont Hospice Team, Rev. Mark Goodin, Rev. Patty Muse of Munsey Memorial UMC, Parrish nurse Lindy Kinser RN, and her special and loving friends and family members.

    UNICOI - Grace Ann Gouge, 80, Unicoi went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, April 22, 2018 at her residence. She was a native of Mitchell County, NC and was a daughter of the late Earl and Nada Street Harrell. Her name describes her well for grace is one of the things she will be remembered for. Her angelic smile and kind, sweet voice will be missed by her family and friends. Grace was a CNA at Appalachian Christian Village and was a homemaker for her sons and some of her grandchildren. She was a loving wife to her husband of 65 years who passed away October of 2017. Grace loved listening to gospel songs and loved the Lord and reading her bible. She was a member of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Bakersville, NC. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Gouge; an infant son, Lenny Gouge; three sisters, Hazel Lewis, Nancy Bea Gibson and Iva Jean Gouge; two brothers, A.J. Harrell and Don Harrell; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Cook and Helen Garland.

    Survivors include two sons, Shane Gouge and wife, Melissa of Elizabethton and Shannon Gouge and wife, Regina of Johnson City; three grandchildren, Gabe and Cody Gouge and Lashanda Gouge-Saldana; five great-grandchildren, William Laws, Korbin Gouge, Gabriel, Abigail and Allie Laws; her sisters-in-law, Mima Jean Taylor, Wanda, Katherine, Jewell, Yvonne and Marzella; several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services for Grace will be conducted at 3:00 PM Friday, April 27, 2018 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. Edward Davis officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until the service hour. Private entombment will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Gardens.

    He was a native of Mitchell County, NC, son of the late David Earl and Nada Street Harrell.

    Donald was a self-employed heavy equipment operator in the construction industry.

    He was a member of the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church.

    Two sons, Todd and Tim Harrell, also preceded Donald in death.

    Survivors include: his son and daughter-in-law, Toby and Anna Harrell of Johnson City; two sisters, Bea Gibson of Johnson City and Grace Gouge and her husband, William H. of Unicoi County; his special friend, Sheila Graham of the home; two grandchildren, Melodi McMillan and her husband, Ryan and Noah Harrell; a great grandchild, Israel McMillan; and special children, Michael Graham, Shannon Graham, Megan Graham and Alex Graham.

    The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 24, 2015 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 pm in the Chapel at Morris-Baker Funeral Home under the direction of Rev. Paul Crowe. A committal service will be held on Monday, January 26, 2015 at 1:00 pm in the Monte Vista Memorial Park with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

    She was a native of Johnson City and a daughter of the late Earl David and Nada Street Harrell. She was also preceded by one brother and two nephews.

    Iva attended Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church.

    Survivors include; one son, Rodney Grant Harrell and his wife, Cindy of Gray; two grandsons, Ethan Grant Harrell and Easton Storm Harrell both of Gray; three sisters, Hazel Lewis and Nancy Gibson both of Johnson City and Grace Gouge of Erwin; one brother, Donald Harrell of Johnson City; several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 pm Wednesday, August 29, 2012 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Paul Crowe will officiate and Pastor Lenny Smith will officiate at the graveside service. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:30 am Thursday from the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Family and friends may meet at the funeral home for an 11:15 am procession from the funeral home to the cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Wednesday.
