    Orla E. Hicks, 96, 208 Dennis Cove Road, Hampton, died Saturday, January 14, 2006, at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Hicks was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late John E. and Bertha Turbyfill Holtsclaw. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin E. Hicks; two sons, Elbert and Dewey Hicks; a daughter, Eula Jean Hicks; two brothers, William Holtsclaw and Prince Holtsclaw; five sisters, Ella McKinney, Inez Ray, Lora Perry, Sally VanSchoiack and Brucie Holtsclaw; a foster daughter, Mae Heaton Montgomery; and a grandson, A.J. Hazelwood. Mrs. Hicks was a member of Union Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
    Survivors include six daughters and sons-in-law, Ruby and Martin Bennett and Elva and E.C. Vines, all of Hampton, Carrie and James Keene, Oak Ridge, Nola Mae and J.D. Cook, Roan Mountain, Ruth and Rick Barrie and Edna and Edward Thomas, all of Elizabethton; a daughter-in-law, Lala Hicks, Hampton; a foster son and his wife, Allen and Jenny Heaton, Kings Mountain, N.C.; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and three great-greatgrandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Hicks will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, January 15, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Campbell, Rev Gary Perkins and Rev. Pete Pollard officiating. Music will be under the direction of the family and Mrs. Karen Timbs, pianist. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service in the chapel. The graveside service will be conducted at 11a.m. Monday, January 16, in the Morton Cemetery, Hampton. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. Monday. Active pallbearers will be selected from Mrs.Hicks' grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be her brothers and sisters in Christ and a host of friends. Friends may call at the residence of a daughter, Elva Vines.

    Nolamae H. Cook, 73, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at her residence, surrounded by her family. Nolamae was born in Roan Mountain, Tenn., to the late Alvin and Orla Holtsclaw Hicks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Elva Vines and Eula Jean Hicks, and her brothers, Dewey Hicks and Elbert Hicks.
    Nolamae had worked as a medical secretary and attended Open Door Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and loved to play piano for many churches, loved her family, spending time with her grandchildren, loved gardening and taught Sunday School.
    Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 49 years, Jimmy Dale "J.D." Cook, of the home; one son, Dale Cook and wife Tonia of Roan Mountain; one daughter, Darla McKinney and husband Chris of Louisville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Gracie Cook, Dalton Cook, Randy McKinney and wife Jacqueline, and Dustin McKinney; one great-granddaughter, Aria; her sisters, Ruby Bennett and husband Martin of Hampton, Edna Thomas and husband Ed and Ruth Barrie and husband Rick, all of Elizabethton, and Carrie Reene of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and a special sister-in-law, Karen Parlier and husband Allen of Elizabethton.
    A service to celebrate the life of Nolamae H. Cook will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, November 30, at the Open Door Baptist Church, Elk Park, N.C., with Rev. Reed Callahan and Rev. Richard Sheppard officiating. Music will be provided by the church congregation and Charlotte Smith. The family will receive friends at the church from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service, or at the residence at other times. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, December 1, at Pilgrim Baptist Church Cemetery in Elk Park, N.C. Active pallbearers will be Kenneth Thomas, Tip Brown, Freddie Holly, Ted Hardin, David Cook and Jamie Barrie. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Hicks, Steve Blair, Ray Blair, Charles Buchanan, Lewis Grindstaff and her grandsons. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Friday. The family would like to thank Mountain States Hospice, Dr. Kenneth Hopland, Dr. Israel Garcia, and the doctors and staff of Sycamore Shoals Hospital for the love and care shown to Nolamae during her illness.

    ELIZABETHTON - Kenneth Dale Thomas, age 54, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 22, 2021 at the Johnson City Medical Center, following a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Carter County, Tennessee, he was the son of Edward Thomas and Edna Hicks Thomas.

    He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Alvin E. and Orla Holtsclaw Hicks, and his paternal grandparents, Gurney and Helen Treadway Thomas; his father-in-law, Shelby Williams; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

    He was a 1984 graduate of Hampton High School where he was voted “Mr. HHS” his senior year and played on the football team for four years. After graduation, he attended East Tennessee State University, graduating in 1988. He was employed by the Carter County Board of Education as a Student Management System Coordinator. He was a member of Beck Mountain Baptist Church.

    Ken enjoyed bluegrass music and went to Japan for two weeks in 2005 with a local bluegrass group and entertained the citizens of that country. He also played the doghouse bass for other musical groups in the area throughout the years.

    In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Sharon Williams Thomas; two daughters, Elizabeth (Beth) Powell and husband Brent Powell and Suzanne James and husband Caleb James; one grandson, Owen Thomas Powell; one sister and brother-in-law, Karen Joyce and Mark Timbs; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nina Williams Hyder and husband Tommy Hyder; two nephews, Cody Hyder and wife Kelly Hyder and Adam Timbs and wife Allison Timbs; one niece, Shelly Hyder Martin and husband Dave Martin; mother-in-law, Linda Williams; five aunts and three uncles, Carrie Keene, Ruby Bennett, Ruth Barrie and husband Rick Barrie, Gary Thomas and wife Kay Thomas, James (Jim) Taylor and Kathleen Thomas Carden; four lifelong friends, Sam Stout, Brian Mathes, Tim Cable and Mick Kyte and numerous cousins also survive.

    A graveside service to celebrate the life of Kenneth Dale Thomas will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 26, 2021 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Reverend Ronnie Campbell and Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of J.P. Mathes and Leona Mathes. Active pallbearers will be Brent Powell, Caleb Jones, Adam Timbs, Mickey Kyte, Mark Timbs, Tim Andrews, Jack Jaynes, Cody Hyder, Gary Jenkins and Dave Martin. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian Mathes, Tim Cable, Dan Boner, Rick Guinn, Sam Stout, Jerry Sanders, Michael Laws and the employees of the Carter County Board of Education.
