ELIZABETHTON - William Charles LaPorte, "Dude", went to be with the Lord on Dec. 23, 2019, surrounded by his loving family at his home in Elizabethton, TN. He was just shy of his 90th birthday.

He was born in Carter County on January 13, 1930. He served in the National Guard US Infantry as a Corporal from 1950-1952 and fought in the Korean Conflict. He received his Bachelor of Science in 1956 from East Tennessee State College.

Early in his career, he was the bookkeeper for Presnell Motors and was the manager for Lakeshore Restaurant and Cabins for several years. In 1962, Dude decided to be his own boss and started LaPorte Construction and became a well-known residential and commercial contractor. Around 1984, Dude decided to spend his life traveling and retired, leaving his construction company to his oldest son, Charles LaPorte, who continues to this day.

Dude was known as a true Carter Countian being born, raised and spending his entire life in the area. He was known not only as a jokester, but also for his love and generosity for Carter County. He generously donated his time and money for many years for Habitat for Humanity.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Joseph and Minnie Lee Combs LaPorte and his siblings, Tony, Sarah, Joe and Frank. And his niece, Leslie LaPorte Westberry and his nephew, Lee Frank LaPorte

He is survived by his wife, Helen Darlene LaPorte, his four children, Charles LaPorte (Cheryl Tupper), Kazel Lee Carbone (David), Mark LaPorte (Jana) and Camille Liebbe (Jerry). His six nephews which include, Sam, Chris, Steve, Joe Jr. LaPorte, Anthony and Greer. As well as his twelve grandchildren and soon to be great-grandchild.

A memorial service to honor the life of Charles "Dude" LaPorte will be held at 5:00 PM Friday, December 27, 2019 in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton with Rev. Raymond Amos and Rev. Estel Williams officiating. The family will greet friends and share memories with those in attendance at the end of the service. Music will be the under the direction of David Arney, organist, Loretta Bowers, soloist and Bob Carroll soloist.

Private inurnment will be at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Honorary pallbearers will be; Mara LaPorte Ross, David LaPorte, Nathan LaPorte, Daniel Carbone, Elizabeth Carbone, Beatrice Carbone, Anna Carbone, Brendon LaPorte, Dakota LaPorte, Roby Liebbe, Paxton Liebbe, and Evie Liebbe.

Harry Houston “Bud” White of Lawrenceville, Ga., passed away on April 26, 2021 in Buford, Ga. Harry was a native of Carter County. His parents were Dan and Ollie White of Stoney Creek.
Harry graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1948, and entered the U.S. Air Force where he served as a flight radio operator during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and became a telecommunications engineer. He married Jean (Barnes) White, also of Elizabethton, and spent most of the remainder of his life in the Atlanta area. After retiring from the telecommunications industry, Harry joined Admissions and Guest Services at Dollywood Theme Park (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.), where he worked for an additional 18 years before “retiring” again.
Harry was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, where he became a 32nd-degree Mason. He served as a Deacon at Mount Carmel Christian Church, Stone Mountain, Ga., for a number of years. He loved reading about the Old West, and made several trips to his favorite place: Yellowstone National Park.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, and is survived by his two children, Dr. Richard E. White and Sandra J. White, both of Dacula, Ga.; two grandchildren, Gina M. White, Augusta, Ga., and Daniel R. White, Dacula, Ga.; and a sister, Hazel Truman Hester, Lake Mary, Fla.
The graveside service and entombment will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, April 30, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Greg Key, minister, officiating.

COCOA, FL - Velma Louise Pleasant, age 76, of Cocoa, Florida went to join her husband with her Lord on Monday, October 3, 2016. Holding her hand when she stepped into Glory, was her special niece Kimberly Sheffield Haney. Velma was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late Reverend John Sheffield and Maude Combs Sheffield. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of fifty-three years, Sidney Pleasant; a sister, Geneva Campbell; and a brother, Thomas Sheffield

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Sidney Pleasant, II and John C. Pleasant and wife Donna, all of Cocoa, FL; a granddaughter, Sydney E. Pleasant, of Cocoa, FL; a brother, Ken Sheffield and wife Cathy, of Morristown, TN; and several special nieces and nephews and a special cousin, Charles "Dude" LaPorte and his wife Darlene.

The committal and entombment service for Mrs. Velma Louise Pleasant will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 8, 2016 in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Velma married Sidney E. Pleasant on 8 Apr 1960 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Sidney (son of Walter Brownlow Pleasant and Sanna N. Church) was born about 1924 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee; died on 31 Mar 2013 in Brevard County, , , Florida. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
