ASHLAND - JONAH D. ICENHOUR, 69, of East Ninth St., died Monday evening in Samaritan Hospital after a short illness.

A resident of Ashland for the past 18 years, he was a retired employee of the F. E. Myers & Bros. He had recently been employed at the Hyco Mfg. Co.

Surviving are his wife, Ivale; five daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Eller of Savannah, Mrs. Helen Powers, Mrs. Nannie Phillips and Mrs. Paul Thompson, all of Ashland, and Mrs. Mary Townsley of Clyde; four sons, James and Kenneth of Ashland, George in TN, and R. Eugene of Bailey Lakes; 30 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Nell Eller and Mrs. Bell Horne, both in TN, and Mrs. Heidi Green in Virginia; three brothers, Sam and Charles, both in TN, and Roy in PA.

Services will be held Thursday at Gilbert Funeral Home. Burial will be in Ashland County Memorial Park.

Luther Haskell "Ike" Icenhour, Sr., age 88, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at his residence.

He was a native of Johnson County, Tenn., and son of the late John A. and Catherine Moretz Icenhour. He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Waunetta Icenhour.

He was a retired employee of Univac and a long-time member of St. Luke United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn and Boyce Allison, Bristol Virginia, and Shelby and Dennis Cox, Sr. of Bluff City; and sons and daughters-in-law, Luther H. Icenhour Jr. and wife Ruth, Bristol Tennessee, John A. Icenhour and wife Judy, Bristol Virginia, James A. Icenhour and wife Annie, Bristol, Virginia, Leroy Icenhour and wife Barbara, Bristol Virginia, Bobby Icenhour and wife Shirley, Bristol Tennessee, and Eddie Icenhour and wife Deborah, Abingdon. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted 7:30 p.m., Wednesday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William Slagle officiating, assisted by Rev. Rich Mullan. Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m., Thursday in Mountain View Cemetery.

The following grandsons will serve as pallbearers: Danny Icenhour, John Icenhour, Jr., Chris Icenhour, Boyce Allison II, Tony Icenhour, Tim Icenhour, Jeff Icenhour, Brian Icenhour, Dennis Cox Jr., and Nick Belcher. ICENHOUR, JAMES BUTLER James Butler Icenhour, 78, of Bristol Virginia, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at the home of his son, 109 Crestwood Road, Bristol, Tenn. He was a retired employee of Morrison Moulded Fiber Glass Corporation and a member of State Street Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Okielee Lunsford Icenhour; a daughter, Sue Icenhour of Bristol Virginia; two sons, James A. George M. Miller, son of Pinkney and Sarah Eisenhour Miller, was born February 13, 1910 in Zionville, N. Car., and died April 14, 1987, at this farm home near Munden, at the age of 77 years, two months and one day.

He received his elementary education in the Trade, Tenn., Public Schools. He was united in marriage to Iva L. Bowers on July 18, 1945 at Concordia.

He moved to Kansas in 1938 and to Belleville in 1943. He was employed by Melton Motor Company as a mechanic. He was engaged in farming since 1951. He was baptized in the Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother, four brothers, two sisters and one granddaughter.

He is survived by his wife, of the home; two sons, Loyd Miller of Carlsbad, N. M., Roy L. Miller of Bluff City, Tenn., one daughter, Mrs. George (Mary E) Carr of Sevierville, Tenn.; three brothers, Benjamin, Clyde and Ivey Miller of Johnson county, Tenn; three sisters, Sue Smith of Lenora, N. Car., Bertha Woodard of Trade, Tenn.; Mae Manuel of Mountain City, Tenn; six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart Memorial Chapel of Belleville, on April 17, conducted by Pastor Wendell Mohler. Interment was in Ida Cemetery.

Billy Wallace Horne, age 84, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at the Mountain City Care Center. He was born on January 16, 1933 to the late Worley and Belle Icenhour Horne. In addition to his parents, Billy was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Horne; sisters: Ruby Horne, Ruth Horne and Emma Pope Walton; brother, Lynnville Horne.

Billy loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and loved squirrel hunting and his dogs. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes. He enjoyed music, especially Bluegrass and was a gifted fiddle player. Like most men of his generation, Billy was a proud farmer and also worked at sawmills throughout his life.

Eva was the love of his life. His goal in life was to spread the Gospel so people could go to heaven. He loved his family and friends and would do anything to help anyone out. He was also a funny man and enjoyed joking around and having fun.

Billy was a Korean War Veteran and honorably served in the United States Army.

He was a member and Deacon of Doe Valley Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memories include his sisters: Juanita Tester and Betty Canter; brothers: Daniel Horne, Robert Horne and wife Linda and Richard Horne and wife Sally; brother-in-law, Johnny Roberts and wife Ilene; sisters-in-law, Lois Wilson and Peggy Hawkins; several nieces and nephews who were very close to him and loved him dearly and many special friends.

The family will receive friends from 2-3:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at the Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Daniel Jones, J.C. Greene and Barry Dunn officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow at the JC Wilson Cemetery. Pallbearers are Michael Hodge, Carroll Canter, Larry Canter, Josh Lawley, Dustin Bunting, Jeffrey Wilcox and Robert Horne. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Tester, Dr. Whitlock, Dr. Griffith, Dr. Shine and Jim Bunting.

Paul "Jack" Eller was born on March 24, 1940 to the late Bell and Nell Icenhour Eller. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by two sisters, Oma Norris (Lee) and Mary Ann Dickens (Shot); brother, Delmer Eller; niece, Brenda Amberger; nephew, Kenny Norris, brothers-in-law, Conley (Betty Jean) Eller, Roy (Virginia) Eller, Carl Eller and John Brown.

Jack started working at an early age. He worked at Burlington, Shoe plant, Levis and The Town of Mountain City.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He loved his church family, especially the children. Jack loved fishing with his sons and enjoyed watching westens and wrestling. Jack was very active in his community and was a member of the Second District Volunteer Fire Department for over 43 years. He was a great husband, father brother and grandfather. He always had a smile and loved everyone.

Those left to cherish Jack's memory include his wife and best friend of 65 years, June Eller; sons and daughters-in-law Tommy Jack and Holly Eller and Randy and Missy Eller; brother, Bob Eller and wife JoAnn; sister, Myrtle Brown; grandchildren Karen, Amanda Blevins (Matt), Shana Jenkins (Jesse), and Josh Eller ( Ally), great grandchildren, Ava, Jack, Kynzleigh, Liam, Nash, Jax and Baby Girl due in August, Hailey and Nadia; many special nieces, niphews and special friends.

John Kenneth Eisenhower, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 in Johnson City, TN. John was born on November 29, 1932 to the late Joseph and Mary Eisenhower. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Ruth and Betty and brother, George.

John was a lifelong resident of Johnson County who loved being outdoors, fishing, and hunting. He was a kind-hearted family man and a great example of a husband and father. He enjoyed giving everyone nicknames and he was lovingly nicknamed “Jart”. He had a special love for Sunset Beach, NC, and the wonderful seafood. He also loved gardening, Andy Griffith Show, Gunsmoke, and celebrating his favorite holiday, Christmas.

Gladys Marie McCloud, age 73, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born on April 1, 1942 to the late Ray and Venia Loggins Icenhour.

Gladys is survived by her husband of 54 years, Derl H. McCloud; daughters: Alesia Marie McCloud-Chan and husband Paul H. Chan of Denver, CO and Teresa Pearl McCloud Chaplain of Zionville, NC; sister, Laura Ann Davis and husband Charles of Mountain City, TN and her two daughters, Anita Perry and Dianne Wilson; grandchildren: Johnathon Dwight Chaplain, Jessica Lauren Chaplain, David McCloud Chan and Andrew McCloud Chan and many other special nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gladys graduated from Johnson County High School in 1960, attended Garner-Webb College from 1960-61, and then later received a B.S. in Elementary Education from Carson-Newman College in 1989. She was an active 4-H member and a member of both her high school and college debate teams.

Gladys and her husband, Derl, published The Tomahawk newspaper until 1986, and she wrote a weekly column, "Gabbing with Gladys." After they sold the newspaper, Gladys returned to college and finished her degree, and Derl took seminary classes and entered the ministry. In 1990, Gladys began working as a teacher with Johnson County Public Schools. She taught second grade at both Neva School and Roan Creek School and after retiring from the classroom in 2007, she continued to work as a certified reading tutor through December of 2014. During this time, she also worked alongside Derl as pastor's wife in four churches: State Line Baptist Church, Roan Creek Baptist Church, Shady Valley Baptist Church and Bethel Baptist Church.

Raised in Rainbow Baptist Church, Gladys was a devout Christian woman who read her Bible every morning and night. After she and Derl were married, they became members of Roan Creek Baptist Church. Then, when their daughters were teenagers, they joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where Gladys and Jean Wilson began an Acteens program. They rejoined Roan's Creek Baptist Church after Derl retired from the ministry. In every church home, Gladys was involved in WMU, Vacation Bible School and a host of other church and Watauga Baptist Association activities. Over the years, she and Derl also organized and participated in over 25 mission trips across the United States, including trips to Florida, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

In addition to church related activities and spending time with family, Gladys enjoyed quilting, reading and being outside. She and Derl also loved to travel and visited 47 states, as well as England and Scotland. In 2012, they shared a special trip to Alaska in honor of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at Roan Creek Baptist Church with Pastor David Hankal officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will follow the funeral at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday evening, May 2, 2015, at Roan Creek Baptist Church.

Mr. Harvey J. Canter, 74, of 4992 Meat Camp Road, Todd, died Monday morning, Nov. 20, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born May 15, 1932 in Watauga County, a son of the late Frank and Lillie Icenhour Canter.

Mr. Canter was a retired sawmill operator.

Survivors include his wife, Caroline Icenhour Canter; five daughters, Dovie Evans and husband, Ronnie, Katherine Potter, Lisa Johnson and husband, Van, all of Todd; Loretta Guy and husband, Terry, of Sugar Grove, and Gail Evans of Butler, Tenn.; two sons, Harold Canter of Todd, and Thomas Canter and wife, Michelle, of Boone; two sisters, Dorothy Miller and husband, George, of Hickory, and Viola Coffey of Yadkinville. Twelve grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Johnny Harvey Canter; five brothers, Austin, Gurney, Horton, Odell, and Dennis Canter; three half-brothers, Dave Icenhour, Wade Canter, and Ralph Canter; two half-sisters, Hazel and Berthie Miller; one daughter-in-law, Martha Canter; and one grandson-in-law, David Burchette.

Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Nov. 22, 2006, at Elk Knob Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harold Danner, the Rev. Eric Cornett, and the Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating.

Burial followed in the Mains Cemetery.

Ivalee was born March 2, 1938, to the late General Lee Brown and Dovie Ivalee Pennell Brown. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Charles M. Robinson; daughter Ellen Robinson; brothers Raleigh Brown, Ed Brown and Earl Brown; sister, Julie Mae Hodge; Grandchildren, William Isaacs and Jennifer Holman.

Ivalee enjoyed spending time with her family and was a member of the Centerview Church of Christ. She also enjoyed reading, camping, and planting flowers in her garden.

Funeral services for Ivalee will be held at 2pm on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, in the Charlie B. Hux Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 1pm – 2pm prior to service.

Graveside service and burial will be held following funeral service at Reece Cemetery on Bulldog Road, Trade, TN.
