JOHN A. LOWE DIES SATURDAY
Citizens of Johnson county were saddened last Saturday morning, April 23, when they heard that John A. Lowe had passed away peacefully in his sleep some time early that morning at his home, near Shupe's Mill. He was in his eighty-third year.
Mr. Lowe had, during his long life, been circuit court clerk here for eight years, assistant postmaster at Mountain City for 17 years, taught school in the county for a number of years, and was active in the affairs of the Baptist church.
He was married to Sofia Loretta Wills on April 21, 1887, and Mrs. Lowe preceded him in death in September of 1948.
Mr. Lowe died just two days after what would have been their 62nd wedding anniversary, if Mrs. Lowe had survived just seven months longer.
He was a deacon of the Mountain City First Baptist Church for more than 50 years, during which he had served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, and as church clerk.
Funeral services were held from the Baptist Church here last Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, with the pastor, Joel H. Ponder, officiating. Interment was in the Phillippi cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers, and members of the Young Matrons Class of the church served as flower bearers.
Surviving are four daughters; Mrs. C. O. Shupe, Mrs. Ethel Goodwin, Mrs. Gertie Fritts, and Mrs. Myrtie Jenkins, all of this community, and two brothers, Alex and David Lowe of Jonesboro. Twenty grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren also survive.

Lillian Grace Lowe Whitis, 2380 Hinkle Road, Eubank, died Sunday, Jul21, 1996, at Columbia Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. She was 88.

A native of Neva, Tenn., she was born July 29, 1907, daughter of the late Abner and Mary Lunsford Lowe. She was a homemaker and member of Neighbors Coming together and Eden Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Leonard and Evelyn Whitis, Eubank; four daughters, Marie Dove, Radcliff, Mazine and Van French, Columbus,Ohio, Muadine and James Glass, Flomation, Ala., and Rose and Bill Estep, Somerset; 18 granchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her hsuband, Garfield Whitis, her parents; three brothers, three sisters, Emma mcCorkle, Jane Surber and Winnie Whitis; and a grandchild.

COLD SPRINGS - Mildred Pauline Dancy, 103, of Cold Springs, passed away February 14, 2023 in Mountain City, Tennessee, after suffering a stroke.

Pauline, as she liked to be called, was born February 20, 1919 to the late Charles O. Shupe and Mary Ethie Lowe Shupe in Cold Springs, Johnson County, Tennessee. Her father ran the Shupe Roller Mill which had been in the family for over 100 years. Pauline attended local schools and graduated from Johnson County High School. After graduation, Pauline took the advice of a cousin and attended the Beauty Academy in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina where she received her cosmetology license. It was also in North Wilkesboro where she met her future husband, Isham Wiles Dancy.

Pauline and Ike were married on April 1, 1939 at the courthouse in Independence, Virginia. Soon after, they moved to Baltimore, Maryland where Ike worked as a welder at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyards.

MOUNTAIN CITY — Joseph M. "Jake" Fritts, age 90, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2010, at the Watauga Medical Center following a brief illness.

He was a native of Johnson County, Tennessee, and was born on June 6, 1920, the son of the late Joe M. and Gertie Lowe Fritts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters: Doris, Euna, Minnie and Winnie; and two brothers: Manis and Manuel.

Mr. Fritts was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Air Corps. He was a member and past adjutant of the American Legion, Johnson County Post No. 61, and of the Johnson County Historical Society. Mr. Fritts was one of the oldest living members and had the longest membership attendance record at First Baptist Church of Mountain City.

He was in the produce business for many years, having been associated with Beverly's Inc. of Pahokee and Homestead, Florida. He was also employed by Bush Brothers Canning Company of Dandridge, Tennessee, as their green bean buyer in Mountain City.

Mr. Fritts is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mrs. Ruby Moretz Fritts; one daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Norman E. Garland, of Boone, NC; one grandson, Douglass Blake Garland, of Pleasant Garden, NC; one granddaughter, Sonya Ann Winkler, of Boone, NC; five great grandchildren: Jackson and Lauren Garland, Hanna and Holden Hartzog and Jacob Winkler; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-3:00 p.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010, at the First Baptist Church with the funeral service to follow at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Ricky Campbell, Minister Jim Hutchinson and Pastor Wynn Greer to officiate. Music will be under the direction of the First Baptist Church Choir.

Military Honors and Interment will follow from the Sunset Memorial Park and will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Active Pallbearers are: Jack Swift, Jack Cress, Sonny Stout, Bill Hughes, James Lefler, Harold Garland, Terry Thompson and Pat Greene. Honorary Pallbearers are: Bob Miller, Jay Woodards, Ray Payne, Blaine Stout, Nelson Gray and Roby Howard Jr.

Mrs. Hamp-ton was a life long res-i-dent of John-son City. She was the daugh-ter of the late James El-bert and Anna Joe Vaughan Lowe.

Mrs. Hamp-ton was a mem-ber of the Sky-line Heights Bap-tist Church. She was a home-maker.

Ted W. "Pawy" Lowe, 88, passed away, Wednesday, November 21st, 2018 peacefully at home, after a brief illness.

Pawy, as he was known to everyone, was born July 27th, 1930 in Washington County, TN to the late Leslie and Lola Lowe. He was a veteran of the US Air Force and served his country in the Korean War. Pawy worked at Klopman Mills, Coca Cola Bottling Co, and retired from EZ Painter. He was the oldest living member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he attended regularly until his health began to fail.

Pawy enjoyed taking his family on camping trips, working his garden, mowing his yard, and watching western movies. He had several trades, one being an electrician; he wired several homes for his family and working on appliances for friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Lowe and brother-in-law, Bill White.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marie "Mawy" Lowe, of the home. Two daughters and son-in-law's; Kathy and Phil Blevins, Karen and Danny Burgess. Five grandchildren and their spouses; Michelle and Wesley Whaley, Tonya and Jesse Wilcox, Melissa and Tim Bailey, Josh and Jayne Hathaway, and Chad and Alecia Burgess. Thirteen great-grandchildren; Caitlyn and Corban Rodefer, Logan, Connor, Tanner, Hudson, and Tucker Bailey. Blake, Jude, Penelope, and Eden Hathaway. Madison and Mason Burgess. Two sisters; Phyllis Sliger and Dorothy White. Two sisters-in-law's; Louann Lowe, Jennie and husband Roy Arrowood. Several nieces and nephews. Special friends; Cecil and Ann Castel, Mitchell Hathaway and Jody Rodefer.

The family will receive friends from 12 PM to 2 PM, Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Mount Zion Baptist Church, Jonesborough. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM with Pastor Cody Greene officiating. Eulogy will be given by Josh Hathaway. Time of remembrance will be held by anyone who wishes to speak. The graveside will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Wesley Whaley, Jesse Wilcox, Tim Bailey, Chad Burgess, Mitchell Hathaway, and Jody Rodefer.
