    Mrs. Virginia Dare Ackerlund, 90, of Missoula, Montana, passed away quietly at the Village Health Care Center on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005.
    She was born March 17, 1915 in Valle Crucis, N.C., the daughter of W. J. Baird and Addie Baird.
    During World War II she worked at a defense factory in Bilozi, Miss., where she met and married her husband Kenneth Ackerlund in 1946.
    Shortly after marriage, they moved to Kenneth's hometown of Missoula. Both were avid outdoors people who loved to hunt and fish together. They spent lots of weekends and vacations at Georgetown Lake in a cabin that they converted from an old hotel.
    Kenneth worked for the railroad and Virginia worked at the University of Montana for many years in the printing department. After they retired, they built a beautiful home on Rock Creek, where they enjoyed nature and Virginia had beautiful flower gardens. She also enjoyed crafts and loved to weave pine needles baskets.
    Survivors include a son, Charles Ackerlund pf Missoula; one grandchild, Jamie Ackerlund of Missoula; one brother, Fred Louis Baird of Hillsboro, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth; two brothers, Ralph J. Baird and Junius R. Barid; and four sisters, Olive Baird, Elizabeth Townsend, Cordelia Hyatt and Doris Tester.
    Viewing will be noon-3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at Garden City Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. followed by a reception in the funeral homer's community room. She will be buried next to her husband at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
