    Ethel Jenkins Hyder, 85, 15 Tester Rd., Elizabethton, died Sunday, 27Dec1998, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home.
    Mrs. Hyder was a native of Carter Co. & the daughter of the late Rod & Mollie Matherly Jenkins. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Tom Jenkins.
    Mrs. Hyder was a former employee of the Bemberg Corporation & a lifelong homemaker, wife & mother. She was a faithful member of Zion Baptist Church for approximately 60 years.
    Survivors include her husband, Vance Hyder, of the home, 3 sons & daughters-in-law, Norman "Buddy" & Jeane Smithdeal Hyder, Valley Forge; Carmon Ray & Sue Calloway Hyder, Milligan; & Tony J. & Brenda Peters Hyder, Elizabethton; a daughter & son-in-law, Nancy Diane Hyder Elliott & Robert H. "Bob" Elliott, Lynn Valley; 10 grandchildren, Michael K. Adams, Andy Hyder, Christopher Hyder, Kathy Hyder Boling, Katrina Hyder Hopson, Alecia Hyder, Debbie Hyder Hodges & Tabitha Hyder, all of Elizabethton; Patrick Hyder, Jonesborough; & Timothy Hyder, Johnson City; a sister, Frankie Oldham, Hampton; a brother & sister-in-law, R. J. & Gloria Jenkins, Valley Forge; a sister-in-law, Blaine Chambers Jenkins; a special niece, Elaine Hyder Brumitt. Fourteen great-grandchildren & several nieces & nephews also survive.

    HYDER - Funeral services for Ethel Jenkins Hyder, 85, 115 Tester Rd., Elizabethton, who died Sunday, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, with Rev. Burl Sluder & Rev. C. W. Snodgrass officiating. Graveside services & interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Gary Jenkins, Tommy Jenkins, David Jenkins, Jim Odom, Zane Loveless & Steve Hyder. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Zion Baptist Church, James McKeehan, Pete Smith, friends & neighbors. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.

    Rod "Big Lou" Jenkins, 69, 114 Brittany Drive, Elizabethton, died Thursday, February 17, 2000, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, following a brief illness.

    Mr. Jenkins was a lifelong resident of Carter County and a son of the late Rod Jenkins Sr. and Molly Matherly Jenkins. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Tom Jenkins, and a sister, Ethel Hyder.

    Mr. Jenkins was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a retired employee of Inland Container Corporation with 30 years of service.

    Survivors include his wife, Gloria Barnett Jenkins, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary W. and Lisa Jenkins, Elizabethton; a daughter, Joyce "Joy" Holtsclaw, Huntsville, Ala.; a sister, Frankie Odom, Elizabethton; and four grandchildren, Jessica Jenkins, Lance Jenkins and Logan Jenkins, all of Elizabethton, and Taylor Holtsclaw, Huntsville, Ala. Several nieces and nephews also survive.


    JENKINS -- A graveside service for Rod "Big Lou" Jenkins, 69, 114 Brittany Drive, Elizabethton, who died Thursday, February 17, 2000, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 20, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Jack Roddy officiating. Active pallbearers will be David Jenkins, Tommy Jenkins, Finley Jenkins, Kevin Avery, Troy Whitehead, Patrick Hyder and Tim Hyder. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Little, George Greene Jr., George McNeil, Jimmy Greenwell and Employees of Inland Container. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Sunday for the graveside service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

    Howard D. Matherly, 83, of Elizabethton, finished his stay on earth on Saturday, January 21, 2017. He was a native of Carter County, born to Eula Lee Beamer and Bowman Matherly on October 23, 1933. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great nephew, Austin James Frazier and a sister-in-law, Betty Joyce Broome.

    Howard is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Marie Garrison Matherly, of the home; three brothers-in-law and their wives, Ray and Sue Garrison; Clyde and Joyce Dean Garrison; C.F. and Olene Garrison, and another brother-in-law, Carroll Broome; four nieces, Karen Heaton, Teresa Sands, Deborah Lowery, and a special niece, Jama Marie Frazier and her husband, Jim Frazier. Three nephews, Steve Garrison, Carl F. Garrison and Eric Garrison also survive.

    Howard was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He was a peacetime veteran of the United States Army who proudly served his country. He was a lifetime member of West Side Christian Church where he was very active and served the church in many capacities, including as a deacon, and on many committees. He was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. He was also active in several community services serving on the Elizabethton Electric System Board of Directors, the Elizabethton City Council, the Housing Board for eight years, as Vice-President of the Elizabethton Chamber of Commerce, the Elizabethton Planning and Zoning Committee, the Girls and Boys Club, the American Red Cross and the Elizabethton Cancer Society.

    Howard worked for J.S. Charles and Company (Carter Finance) for fourteen years and Carter County Bank for thirty-one years. He retired from Carter County Bank in 1998 as a Senior Vice-President and served on the Board of Directors for twelve years following his retirement.

    Funeral services for Mr. Howard D. Matherly will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton with Mr. Greg Key, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the West Side Christian Church Choir. The eulogy will be delivered by William B. "Bill" Greene, Jr. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service and at the home at other times.

    The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from the Elders and Deacons of West Side Christian Church. Honorary pallbearers will be his four brothers-in-law, Clyde Garrison, Ray Garrison, C.F. Garrison and Carroll Broome. Also serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jim Frazier, Jimmy Jam Ensor, Andrew McKeehan, Luther McKeehan, Jim Holmes, Joe Alexander, Pat Heaton, Stan Sands, Carl F. Garrison, Steve Garrison, Eddie Wilson, the officers, directors and employees of Carter County Bank, his neighbors on Daytona Place and the many friends he shared throughout his life. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend are invited to meet the family at the funeral home at 1:15 PM on Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.

    Howard married Marie Garrison about 1948.     HAMPTON - Mr. Timothy Zane (Candy Man) Loveless, age 63, Hampton, TN went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 from his residence. Zane was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and was a friend to everyone. Zane was a graduate of Happy Valley High School and retired from the Johnson City Police Department after twenty-eight and ½ years of service. He also served as Chairman of the Carter County Republican Party and as a Carter County Commissioner. Zane was a member of Zion Baptist Church of Elizabethton and was a member of the Johnson City Elks Lodge.

    He was a native of Elizabethton, TN and was the son of the late Stacy and Ossie Loveless. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Janice Loveless and Kay Vance and a brother, Tommy Loveless. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of forty-four years, Patty Radford Loveless, of the home; two daughters, Becky Loveless and Cassandra Vaughan and her husband Josh; a son, Nicholas Loveless, all of Elizabethton, TN; four grandchildren, Autumn Surcey and husband Tim, Jonathan McAllister, Nicholas Loveless and Carl Loveless and two great-grandchildren, Bentley Surcey and Jordan Surcey. Several nieces, nephews and a sister, Faye and husband Clyde, of Florida and a brother, Darrell Loveless and his wife Sue of Illinois also survive.

    A service to honor the life of Mr. Timothy Zane (Candy Man) Loveless will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Friday, December 23, 2016 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Dr. Alan King officiating. The Johnson City Police Department will serve as Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Friday prior to the funeral service or at the residence at any time.

    Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 24, 2016 in the Lyons Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Tony Vance, Russ Lunceford, John Whitson, Conley Guy and other family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Johnson City Police Department. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday to go in procession to the cemetery.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Vance & Ethel Jenkins Hyder. Buddy was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. He served in the United States Army. He was owner & operator of Hyder Tomato Company. Buddy was a member of the Valley Forge United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Tony Hyder, a brother-in-law: Allen Smithdeal and a special friend: Mike Honeycutt.

    Survivors include his wife of 53 years: Jeane Smithdeal Hyder. A daughter & son-in-law: Kathy & Rick Boling, Elizabethton. A son: Andrew Hyder, Elizabethton. Four Grandchildren: Justin Boling & wife Danielle, Austin Boling, Andrea Hyder and Amy Hyder. One Great Grandchild: Madison Boling. A Sister: Nancy Diane Elliott, Elizabethton, brother: Ray Hyder and wife Sue, Johnson City. His sister-in-law: Brenda Hyder, brother-in-law: Sid Smithdeal & friend Trula Haley, his special friend: Riley Barnett and numerous nieces & nephews.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Valley Forge United Methodist Church with Pastor Joel Cook officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 15, 2017, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Linda Baughman and Judy Little. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the church at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday and at the funeral home at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday will be: Justin Boling, Austin Boling, Pat Hyder, Tim Hyder, Chris Hyder, Gary Jenkins, Art Smithdeal and Travis Brumit. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Michael Adams, Rick Smithdeal, Joe Smithdeal, Rick Boling, Rob Robertson, Rex Ward, Sam Hampton, Randy Slagle, Ronny Street, John D. Snyder, Kelly Crain, Cleatis Boling, his church family and all former employees of Hyder Tomato Company. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Valley Forge United Methodist Church. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to Debbie Street and the staff of Pine Ridge Care Center and Melanie Hall for the excellent care Buddy received.

Nancy was born in Carter County to the late Vance and Ethel Jenkins Hyder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman "Buddy" Hyder and wife Jeane and Tony Jack Hyder, and one nephew, Patrick Hyder.
    Nancy was a legal secretary and had worked for both Sam LaPorte and T.J. Little for many years. She was a past president of the Legal Secretary Association and was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Elizabethton.
    Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Michael K. Adams of Elizabethton; a brother, Ray Hyder and wife Sue of Johnson City; and a sister-in-law, Brenda Hyder of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
