ELIZABETHTON - Glenda "Sue" Hampton, age 80, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 11, 2019 from Signature Health and Rehab Center of Elizabethton, following an extended illness.

Sue was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late Dan and Lydia Mae Glover Matherly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Glenn Hampton; four sisters, Ethel Matherly, Louise Hay, Anna B. Whaley and Nell Matherly; and one brother, Howard "Red" Matherly.

Sue was always on the go! Either working around the church or cooking for the church. She had worked at Pizza Inn for over 30 years and was very proud of her service. She was a loyal and devoted member of Sims Hill Christian Church and enjoyed gardening and raising flowers, cooking, traveling on bus tours and most especially Sue loved being around her family and her church family.

Those left to cherish her wonderful memories include her daughter, Melissa Carr and husband Tim and her grandson, Dylan Carr, all of Elizabethton; a sister, Jean Matherly, of Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Lois Matherly, of Elizabethton; and her nieces and nephews, Jill Baggett and Loria Gabert, both of Alabama, Sandy Cole and Dan Matherly, of Elizabethton. Several great nieces and great nephews also survive.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Glenda "Sue" Hampton will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, February 14, 2019 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. Gerald Holly, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 15, 2019 in the Sims Family Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Tim Carr, Dylan Carr, Bryan Miller and Derrick Hamm. Honorary pallbearers will be Mack Henry, Rock Kelly, Dan Matherly and Jimmy Cole.

Agnes Glover Blackburn, 93, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 2, 2021, at Hillview Health Center. Agnes was born in Carter County to the late Frank and Bertie Sims Glover. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Stuart “Haney” Blackburn; her first husband, C.O. Polen Jr.; and six siblings, Ed Harris, James Glover, Charles Glover, Lillian Carden, Mary Moody and Edna Cole.
Agnes was a longtime member of Zion Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting, reading and visiting Amish country.
Those left to cherish her memories include her children, Carroll Glover (Janet), Janette West (Tony), Anna Hodge and Orin Blackburn (Carol); grandchildren, Tim Barnett (Shelia), Travis Glover, Dustin Glover, Chris West, Samantha Martinez (Josh), Grace Blackburn and Mallory Blackburn; great-grandchildren, Riley Barnett, Kaden Roberts and Sophie Martinez; and special friend, Leonard Cross. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will hold a celebration of life service for Agnes Glover Blackburn at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Alan King and Caleb King officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. Agnes will be laid to rest at Mountain Home National Cemetery and a graveside service will be held at a later date.

Jo Matherly Hickman Cantrell, 81, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at her residence. She was born November 20, 1939 in Elizabethton to the late Fred and Hazel McGee Matherly.
Jo was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, Class of 1957. She was the retired owner of State Line Market and several restaurants. She loved Jesus, her family, traveling, and collecting her beloved teddy bears. She was an avid bowler in her youth.
Jo was a member of Myrtle Beach Christian Church and was a former Trustee of Sims Hill Christian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse “Sam” Hickman; sisters, Gail Tolley and Jessie Davis and husband Johnny Davis; an infant brother, Glen Matherly; and a son-in-law, Richard Porch.
Survivors include her husband and beloved caregiver, Stan Cantrell, of the home; daughter, Cecelia Ann Porch; her grandchildren, Randi (Brian) Teaster, Travis (Megan) Jack, Matthew (Rebecca) Lovelace and Miranda Lovelace; her great-grandchildren, Ethan Teaster, Weston Teaster, Bodie Jack, London Lovelace, Camden Lovelace, Ryan Peterson, Lydia Lovelace and Jonah Love; her sister, Carolyn (Dallas) Pierce; multiple special nieces and nephews; her brothers-in-law, Michael (Dot) Cantrell and Robert Cantrell; and her sisters-in-law, Carol (Randall) Payne, Lena (Otis) Blankenship and Diane Cantrell.
A service to celebrate the life of Jo will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 17, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with her nephew, Mark Willis, officiating. Music will be provided by Bobby McGee. Interment will follow in the Sims Hill Christian Church Cemetery. Ethel Jenkins Hyder, 85, 15 Tester Rd., Elizabethton, died Sunday, 27Dec1998, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home.
Mrs. Hyder was a native of Carter Co. & the daughter of the late Rod & Mollie Matherly Jenkins. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Tom Jenkins.
Mrs. Hyder was a former employee of the Bemberg Corporation & a lifelong homemaker, wife & mother. She was a faithful member of Zion Baptist Church for approximately 60 years.

Rod "Big Lou" Jenkins, 69, 114 Brittany Drive, Elizabethton, died Thursday, February 17, 2000, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, following a brief illness.

Mr. Jenkins was a lifelong resident of Carter County and a son of the late Rod Jenkins Sr. and Molly Matherly Jenkins. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Tom Jenkins, and a sister, Ethel Hyder.

Mr. Jenkins was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a retired employee of Inland Container Corporation with 30 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Barnett Jenkins, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary W. and Lisa Jenkins, Elizabethton; a daughter, Joyce "Joy" Holtsclaw, Huntsville, Ala.; a sister, Frankie Odom, Elizabethton; and four grandchildren, Jessica Jenkins, Lance Jenkins and Logan Jenkins, all of Elizabethton, and Taylor Holtsclaw, Huntsville, Ala. Several nieces and nephews also survive.


JENKINS -- A graveside service for Rod "Big Lou" Jenkins, 69, 114 Brittany Drive, Elizabethton, who died Thursday, February 17, 2000, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 20, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Jack Roddy officiating. Active pallbearers will be David Jenkins, Tommy Jenkins, Finley Jenkins, Kevin Avery, Troy Whitehead, Patrick Hyder and Tim Hyder. Howard D. Matherly, 83, of Elizabethton, finished his stay on earth on Saturday, January 21, 2017. He was a native of Carter County, born to Eula Lee Beamer and Bowman Matherly on October 23, 1933. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a great nephew, Austin James Frazier and a sister-in-law, Betty Joyce Broome.

Howard is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Marie Garrison Matherly, of the home; three brothers-in-law and their wives, Ray and Sue Garrison; Clyde and Joyce Dean Garrison; C.F. and Olene Garrison, and another brother-in-law, Carroll Broome; four nieces, Karen Heaton, Teresa Sands, Deborah Lowery, and a special niece, Jama Marie Frazier and her husband, Jim Frazier. Three nephews, Steve Garrison, Carl F. Garrison and Eric Garrison also survive.

Howard was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended East Tennessee State University. He was a peacetime veteran of the United States Army who proudly served his country. He was a lifetime member of West Side Christian Church where he was very active and served the church in many capacities, including as a deacon, and on many committees. He was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. He was also active in several community services serving on the Elizabethton Electric System Board of Directors, the Elizabethton City Council, the Housing Board for eight years, as Vice-President of the Elizabethton Chamber of Commerce, the Elizabethton Planning and Zoning Committee, the Girls and Boys Club, the American Red Cross and the Elizabethton Cancer Society.

Howard worked for J.S. Charles and Company (Carter Finance) for fourteen years and Carter County Bank for thirty-one years. He retired from Carter County Bank in 1998 as a Senior Vice-President and served on the Board of Directors for twelve years following his retirement.

Funeral services for Mr. Howard D. Matherly will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, January 24, 2017, at the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, Elizabethton with Mr. Greg Key, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the West Side Christian Church Choir. The eulogy will be delivered by William B. "Bill" Greene, Jr. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service and at the home at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from the Elders and Deacons of West Side Christian Church. Honorary pallbearers will be his four brothers-in-law, Clyde Garrison, Ray Garrison, C.F. Garrison and Carroll Broome. Also serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jim Frazier, Jimmy Jam Ensor, Andrew McKeehan, Luther McKeehan, Jim Holmes, Joe Alexander, Pat Heaton, Stan Sands, Carl F. Garrison, Steve Garrison, Eddie Wilson, the officers, directors and employees of Carter County Bank, his neighbors on Daytona Place and the many friends he shared throughout his life. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. HAMPTON - Mr. Timothy Zane (Candy Man) Loveless, age 63, Hampton, TN went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 from his residence. Zane was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and was a friend to everyone. Zane was a graduate of Happy Valley High School and retired from the Johnson City Police Department after twenty-eight and ½ years of service. He also served as Chairman of the Carter County Republican Party and as a Carter County Commissioner. Zane was a member of Zion Baptist Church of Elizabethton and was a member of the Johnson City Elks Lodge.

He was a native of Elizabethton, TN and was the son of the late Stacy and Ossie Loveless. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Janice Loveless and Kay Vance and a brother, Tommy Loveless. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of forty-four years, Patty Radford Loveless, of the home; two daughters, Becky Loveless and Cassandra Vaughan and her husband Josh; a son, Nicholas Loveless, all of Elizabethton, TN; four grandchildren, Autumn Surcey and husband Tim, Jonathan McAllister, Nicholas Loveless and Carl Loveless and two great-grandchildren, Bentley Surcey and Jordan Surcey. Several nieces, nephews and a sister, Faye and husband Clyde, of Florida and a brother, Darrell Loveless and his wife Sue of Illinois also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Timothy Zane (Candy Man) Loveless will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Friday, December 23, 2016 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Dr. Alan King officiating. The Johnson City Police Department will serve as Honor Guard.
