Mrs. Nell V. Calhoun Cuthbertson (Mamma Nell), age 84, peacefully went to her heavenly home February 14, 2019.

She was born the eighth child on June 7, 1934 to Starlin Isaac Calhoun and Jodie Jane Benfield Calhoun in Mitchell County, N.C.

She was married to Floyd (Skeeze) Cuthbertson in July 1954.

Preceding her in death were her Parents: Starlin and Jodie; her husband: Floyd (Skeeze) Cuthbertson; Brother: Coye A Calhoun (Elsie) and six Sisters: Commeylee Sluder (Claude), Amey Sparks (Carl), Agnes Cooper (Dallas), Iris Cooper (Norman), Lucille Sparks (Newton) and Clara Wise (Alvin).

Although Nell had many siblings, she was the last child born and had many nephews and nieces her own age that she grew up with and stayed close.

Nell has two daughters: Debbie and Kelly, and two Sons-in-law: Bobby Blalock and Gene Annas (deceased). Also surviving are three Granddaughters: Shea Blalock Anderson (Eddie), Jodie Blalock Walker (Seth), McKinnley Elizabeth Annas (Abbey); and one Great-Granddaughter: Lucy M. Walker.

Nell was a beautiful gentle soul who loved everyone. She worked at various jobs during her life, the longest being a server at The Broyhill Center at App State where she retired. She faced several illnesses head on and endured them with grace and willpower. Nell was a member of First Baptist Church of Crossnore. She loved to sing and listen to old time gospel hymns.

Services for Nell V. Cuthbertson will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, 2017, at Crossnore First Baptist Church, with Lander Hefner officiating.

The family will receive friends beginning at noon to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the Cuthbertson Cemetery

Carolyn Sue Lewis, age 81, of the Vale community, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. A native of Welch, W. Va., she was a daughter of the late Dennis and Edna Benfield, and wife of the late Stuard Lewis. She was also preceded in death by a brother: Chester Benfield. Sue was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Newland who loved to read and adored her children. Her family was of great importance to her.

In Sue's own words: "I was born a coal-miner's daughter in a cabin on a hill in West Virginia to Edna Napier Benfield and Dennis Victory Benfield on Dec. 25, 1937. My mom delivered me at home with my dad administering the "ether" dropped on a cloth on her face. My grandmother Napier was also there. I believe my parents liked their Christmas "present!" We lived in West Virginia (Welch) until 1940 and by that time I had a baby brother, Chester Morris Benfield. After he was born, they decided to call it "quits" — wonder why? Ha.. My father's mother told my dad if you marry up there "keep her up there." So, they started married life in West Virginia! Not long afterward, Dart Benfield, (Paw's Brother) got his back broke and died in the mines! Boy, then my maw was ready for dad to come home, which we did in 1940 and I'm eternally thankful. (I didn't like West Virginia)."

Left to cherish her memories are her Children: Kaye Baker and husband, Tommy, of Winder, Ga., Rick Lewis of Newland, Dennis Lewis and wife, Jan, of Elk Park, Gil Lewis and Sunni Buchanan, of Roan Mountain, Tenn. and Lori Lewis of Asheville; Grandchildren: Heather Lewis (Aaron Messer), April Ritchey (Chris), Layce Lewis and Matt Lewis (Laura); Great-grandchildren: Grayson and Lincoln Ritchey, Cade Palmer and Baker Clark, Lyndie Lewis and one on the way; and Sister-in-Law: Elaine Benfield. Several other extended family also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Church of Jesus of Christ Newland. Pastor Dave Atkins and Pastor Tommy Baker will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the services at the church. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Church of Jesus Christ Cemetery.

Chester Morris Benfield, 73, passed away on July 29, 2013.

He was born on March 26, 1940, son of the late Dennis and Edna Napier Benfield.

Chester served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1959 - 1960. He retired from Glen Raven/U.S. Textiles and enjoyed growing Christmas Trees at his farm, Santa's Choice Christmas Tree Farm, on Cole Hollow Road in Newland. Chester was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ in Newland, and attended the Vale Freewill Baptist Church in the Vale community of Newland.

Chester's favorite hobbies included playing golf with his buddies, playing guitar, and enjoying time with his many friends and family.

Doyle A Calhoun, 87, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2022, at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone.

Doyle was born on July 18, 1935 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Coye A. Calhoun and the late Elsie Sluder Calhoun.

Doyle was a graduate of Newland High School and had attended NC State and ETSU. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Doyle worked in Printing and Graphic Art. He was in charge of the Metropolitan Atlanta Combined Federal Campaign, and was awarded for his work in the Action/Georgia DHR Senior Companion and Foster Grandparent Program. He was recognized for Outstanding Achievement as Printing Coordinator for GSA.

In his youth, Doyle, was a member of the Vale Freewill Baptist Church in Newland. He was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church in Marietta, Ga., for 35 years and was currently a member of the Cranberry Baptist Church.

Doyle was known for his gourmet cooking and he enjoyed painting, bowling, archery, hunting, gardening, making wine, fishing, photography, bird watching, four wheelers, boating, making fishing lures, skiing, dancing and loved Mexican food. He was also a member of the Avery County Christmas Tree Farmers Association, National Rifle Association and the American Hunters Association.

He was preceded in death by his father, Coye A Calhoun; mother, Elsie S. Calhoun; nephew, Coye Yates and a niece, Christie Yates.

Doyle leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 63 years, Grace Ollis Calhoun; two daughters, Nancy Calhoun (Gary) Thomason Whenman of Newland, NC, Andrea Calhoun (Jesse) Shakarian of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; four grandchildren, Jordan Thomason of Newland, NC, Tori Thomason of Newland, NC, Zane Shakarian of Pacific Palisades, Calif., Stella Shakarian of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; great great grandchild, Ruby Childress of Newland, NC; and a sister, Glenda C. (Alfred) Yates of Newland, NC.

Services for Doyle A Calhoun were held at noon on Saturday, Sept. 10, from the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. Lucas McKinney, David Burnop and Gene Honeycutt officiating. Interment followed in the Fork Mountain Cemetery, where Doyle was the Manager for more than 28 years.
