Lula Eller Smith, age 89, of Banner Elk, NC passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at Life Care Center in Banner Elk, NC.

She was born on March 22, 1930, in Avery County, NC, the 12th out of 13 children of the late Eugene Eller and the late Julia Trivette Eller. Lula worked for Glen Raven Mills and retired from Cannon Memorial Hospital, where she served as the Laundry Supervisor.

She was a longtime member of the Arbor Dale Presbyterian Church. Lula was a loving and kind woman who welcomed anyone, whether stranger, friend or family, into her home. In the true fashion of a Southern lady, no one ever left her home without either having or being offered a drink or eating a meal.

She was the matriarch of both the Eller family and the Smith family. Lula's family was very important to her and she loved everyone, with no exceptions. One of the highlights of her year was the annual Eller Family Reunion.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband: Frank Melvin Smith, Sr.; six Sisters: Kate Brewer, Mary Smith, Grace Goodwin, Margaret Thompson, Rachel Garner, Betty Jo Puckett; six Brothers: Cecil Eller, Gene Eller, Dean Eller, Pat Eller, Roland "Dutch" Eller, Carl Eller.

Lula leaves behind to cherish her memory her Son: Frankie (Peggy) Smith, Jr. of Banner Elk, NC; Granddaughter: Wendy Smith of Banner Elk, NC; Grandson: Rusty (Dr. Mahmoud Saleh) Smith of Charlottesville, Va.; Grandson: David (Marcie) Smith of Newland, NC; Great-Grandson: Carter Smith of Newland, NC; Great-Grandson: Kaden Smith of Newland, NC; Granddaughter: Lizzie McLaughlin of Charlotte.

Funeral services for Lula Eller Smith will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the Arbor Dale Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Tee Gatewood officiating. Interment will follow in the Pappy Will Smith Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to their church families at Arbor Dale Presbyterian and Mount Calvary Baptist for the loving support and concern. To Janet Trammel and Carol Smith for being there with Lula during her final moments and to the staff of Life Care Center for the wonderful love and care they provided.

Betty Jo Eller Puckett, age 86, of Banner Elk, NC, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1931, in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Eugene Eller and the late Julia Trivette Eller.

Betty was a member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Banner Elk and had retired from Cannon Memorial Hospital after many years working in the housekeeping department. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles. Her happiest moments revolved around the holidays and birthdays, which brought her family together. Betty once said "Family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, bring me the most enjoyment in life."

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: William Puckett; five sisters: Kate Brewer, Mary Eller Smith, Grace Goodwin, Margaret Thompson and Rachel Garner; six brothers: Cecil Eller, Gene Eller, Dean Eller, Pat Eller, Roland "Dutch" Eller and Carl Eller.

Betty Jo leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughters: Billie Jo (Bill) Frontz of Myrtle Beach, SC, Janet (Rusty) Trammel of Banner Elk, NC; Sons: Timothy Puckett of Banner Elk, NC, Todd (Judith Bowden) Puckett of Linville, NC; Sister: Lula Eller Smith of Banner Elk, NC; Grandchildren: Jessica (Byron) Clawson, Natasha (Glenn) Griffith, Sean (Jennifer) Puckett, Shane (Hailey) Puckett, Brandon (Michelle) Frontz, Kyle (Nicole) Trammel, Carly (John) Woods, Riley Puckett and 13 great grandchildren.

Services for Betty Jo Eller Puckett will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, from the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Rev. George Wright officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Interment will be in the Bill Puckett Family Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 10.

Mrs. Lois Eller Hughes, 79, of Rominger Road in Banner Elk, and formerly of Dean B. Eller Road in Newland, passed away Friday morning, May 18, 2018, at her home.

Born Oct. 26, 1938, in Avery County, she was a daughter of Dean and Bessie Townsend Eller. Lois was a graduate of Newland High School. She was in public relations for AT&T before retirement, working in Charlotte and several western NC communities. Mrs. Hughes was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newland. She loved God, and was devoted to family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Lois worked tirelessly to promote a drug-free community for persons with dependencies.

Mrs. Hughes is survived by her Daughter: DeeDee Hughes Rominger and husband, Gary, of Banner Elk; Granddaughter: Jessica Leigh Hughes of Belews Creek; Grandsons: William Garth Rominger of Banner Elk and Matthew Tyler Bissel of Kitty Hawk; Great-Granddaughter: Alyssa Jayla Hughes of Belews Creek; Brother: Kermit Eller and wife, Dianna, of Elk Park; and Sister: Kaye Greene and husband, Michael, of Lenoir; Nieces: Meredith Bradshaw and husband, Kevin, of Catawba, Amanda Miller and husband, Danny, of Mooresville, Brandy Eller of Athens, Ga., Jennifer Tatum and husband, Luke, of Asheville and Erica Eller McLean of Newland; Nephew: Robbie Eller and wife, Jackie, of Newland; and special friends: Betty Erhart and JoeAnn Mihalyi.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Jack Hughes, and son, Jackie Dean Hughes.

Funeral services for Lois Eller Hughes were conducted at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, at the First Baptist Church in Newland, officiated by Dr. Bill Jones. The family received friends from 4 to 6 p.m. at the church.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, May 21, in the Whitaker Branch Cemetery in Newland. At other times, the family will be at the home of DeeDee and Gary Rominger, 985 Rominger Road in Banner Elk.
