    Notes:

We celebrate the life of Mary Kathleen Briggs Hughes, 91, who passed away on Saturday, January 31st, in Newport News, VA. Formerly of Newland, NC, Mary had resided in Virginia since 2002. She was a native of Shell Creek, TN and the daughter of David W. and Flossie Franklin Briggs.

Mary was the family matriarch and cherished each and every opportunity to spend time with her loved ones. She was married to a WWII veteran and after the war ended, they moved across several states while raising their family. Over her lifetime, she was employed by the Gloucester Men's Shop in Gloucester, VA, the Crossnore Hospital cafeteria, and TRW of Newland. After retirement, Mary volunteered in area civic organizations. She loved to read and on any sunny day she would be found working in her flower gardens surrounding the family home. She had many friends that loved her and she will greatly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John French Hughes and brothers Harold Briggs and Robert "Bob" Briggs.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Mary's dedicated caregiver, Annie Carmine, and to the entire staff of The Gardens at Warwick Estates of Newport News, VA, with special appreciation to Sara Bowers and Apryl Wolford, for their wonderful care of our Mother and Grandmother.

Mary married John French Hughes about 1936. John (son of Straley Jason Hughes and Cassie V. Blackburn) was born on 11 Sep 1916 in , Avery County, North Carolina, ; died on 6 Jul 1998; was buried in Hughes Cemetery, , Avery County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
