    Mrs. Eliza Jane Garland, 80, Shady Valley, died in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va., Tuesday 4:45 a.m., after a lengthy illness. She was a native of Johnson County, daughter of the late Perry and Aley Hutchinson Blevins. She was a member of Harmons Chapel Christian Church.
    Survivors include her husband, Jesse H. Garland, U-T hospital, Knoxville; two sons, Cebert Garland, Springfield, O., and I. C. Garland, Shady Valley; two daughters, Mrs. Deward Blevins, Shady Valley, and Mrs. Ray Price, Akron, O.; two brothers, Ambrose and I. C., both of Shady Valley; three sisters, Mrs. Katherine Walker, Daneville, Ill., and Mrs. Cynthia Long and Mrs. Hattie McQueen, both of Shady Valley; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be conducted from the Harmons Chapel Christian Church Thursday, 2 p.m. with ministers, Clay Bailey and John H. Hall to officiate. Burial will be in the Blevins Cemetery.
    Pall-bearers[sic] will be Wiley Elmer Blevins, Bobby Long, R. D. Garland, Reford[sic] McQueen, James C. Hutchinson, Tony Long, Barry Blevins, and Acra Cretsinger.
    Flower-bearers will be ladies of the church and neighbors.
    Lewis Gentry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

    I. C. Garland, age 95, of Mountain City, passed away on Saturday, December 4, 2009, at Mountain City Health Care.

    I. C. was a native of Shady Valley, TN and was born June 6, 1914 to the late Jessie and Eliza Blevins Garland. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Army from 1941 through 1946 in Africa and Italy. He was awarded four bronze stars. Prior to joining the Army, he played baseball for the New Your Giants Farm Team in Akron, Ohio. I. C. was a graduate of Steed College and East Tennessee State College. He taught school in Carter County and was Principal of Shady Valley Elementary School for several years. He was listed in the 1968-69 Southern and Southeast Edition of Who's Who. He helped start the first Guidance Association for public schools in Tennessee. He also worked for Raytheon and enjoyed building homes. I. C. served on the Board of Directors for Skyline Telephone Corp. for 40 years. He served on the Johnson County Jury Commission for 17 years and also served on the Planning Commission. He was a member of Harmons Chapel Christian Church.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Sluder Garland, three sisters, Mada Scott, Myrtle Neine Blevins, and Gertie Price; and brother, Cebert Garland.

    Survivors include his son, Eddie Garland and wife Allyson of Loudon, TN; grandson, Jack Garland and wife Meagan of Big Sandy, TN; granddaughters, Jenna Raine and Alyssa Jade Garland of Loudon, TN; two brothers-in-law, Deward Blevins of Shady Valley and Bob Sluder and wife Carolyn of Johnson City; three sisters-in-law, Stella Cox of Japan, Goldie Sparger of Mt. Airy, NC and Shelby Mahan and husband Jim of Butler; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Also, special friends, Jim and June Hutchinson and very special friend and care giver, Mary Cornett.

    The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 6, 2009, at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Jim Hutchinson, Minister and Howard Taylor, Minister officiating. Music will be provided by the group Narrow Road and Michael Hawkins. Pallbearers will be Michael Hawkins, Bob Sluder, Doug Mahan, Stephen Mahan, Rusty Sluder and Tom Seaton. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Mahan, Richard Blevins, Dr. John Whitlock, Dr. Peter Haibach and formers board member of Skyline Telephone. Burial will follow in Blevins Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by Johnson County Honor Guard.

    The family wishes to express special thanks and appreciation to his special friends and caregivers at the Mountain City Care Center and for his helpful friends and neighbors in Shady Valley.

    A native of Shady Valley, Tenn., he moved to Pomona Park in 1962 from Bristol, Tenn. He retired from the Georgia-Pacific pulp mill in 1978. He was a member of West Side Church of Christ in Palatka.
    He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline Blevins of Pomona Park; two sons, Dean Blevins of Pomona Park and Jacky Blevins of Palatka; three daughters, Peggy James and Sandra Smith, both of Laurel, Md., and Gloria Barnsley of Olney, Md.; brother, Berry Blevins of Shady Valley, Tenn.; two sisters, Mona McQueen and Sue Berry, both of Shady Valley, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
    His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Clayton Frank & Sons Funeral Home in Crescent City with the Rev. Ed. Starling officiating. Burial will be in Eden Cemetery.

Surviving are three daughters, Delores Blevins of Rockford, AL, and Phyllis Perdue and Judy Mahala, both of Shady Valley; a son, Kenny McQueen, of Butler; a sister, Sue Barry of Shady Valley; a brother, R.B. Blevins of Shady Valley; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Harmon Christian Church by Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus. Jim Hutchinson, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Blevins Cemetery.     Russell Berry "R.B." Blevins, age 84, of Shady Valley, passed away Friday, January 2, 2009 at his residence.

    Berry was born March 28, 1924, in Johnson County, TN, to the late Isaac C. and Gertie Mae Long Blevins. Berry was a life long resident of Shady Valley and enjoyed farming, hunting, cars, all sports, especially the UT Vols. He was a member of the Shady Valley baseball team.

    He was a member of Shady Valley Church of Christ, where he was a deacon and song leader for several years. He loved his family and will be truly missed.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Mona McQueen, Sue Barry and Nina Sams; and two brothers, Blaine Blevins and Ozra Blevins.

    Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Azona Blevins; two daughters, Lisa Watson and husband, Chris, of Shady Valley, and Teresa Ann Owens, of Damascus, VA; four sons, Ronnie Blevins and wife, Jewell, of Nicholasville, KY, Roger Blevins and wife, Lois, of Shady Valley, Tim Blevins and wife, Melanie, of Knoxville, TN, and Cleve Blevins and wife, Kentia, of Lakeland, FL.; grandchildren, Jody Blevins, Angie Manz and husband, Dan, Jeffery Blevins, Drew Phillips, Amy Phillips, Troy Owens, Brandi Owens, Logan Blevins, Grant Blevins, Madison Blevins, Kristen Watson, Kelsey Watson and Hannah Blevins; three great grandchildren, Kelsa Blevins, Jacob and Olivia Manz; and several nieces and nephews.

    The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 4, 2009, at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 5, 2009, at Shady Valley Church of Christ with Kirk Sams and Jim Sherman, Ministers, officiating.

    Pallbearers will be Kelly Bentley, Clifford Blevins, Bud Gentry, Gary Gentry, Mark Gentry, Dennis Honaker, Charles Townsend and Clifford Watson.     Surviving are his wife, Mary M.; daughter, Rebecca S. Geary of LaOtto; sons, Stephen E. of Churubusco and Gregory W. of Fort Wayne; sisters, Mona McQueen and Sue Barry, both of Shady Valley; brothers, Blane of Pamona Park, Fla., and Berry of Shady Valley; and four grandchildren.

    Services are 11 a.m. tomorrow in the church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Calling is 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., and 10 to 11 a.m. tomorrow in the church. Preferred memorials are gifts to the church.

Callahan, 80, 1550 Hwy 133, Shady Valley, passed away at her residence Sunday, May 14, 2000 She was a native of Johnson County, a daughter of the late Willis and Hattie Blevins McQueen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas P. "Pat" Callahan, who died in 1969, also by a sister, Walsa Eller. She was a former employee of Blue Ridge Shoe Company, president of the Shady Valley Home Demonstration Club and a member of the Shady Valley Church of Christ. Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Callahan Honaker, Shady Valley, Tennessee; two brothers, Raleigh McQueen, Atlanta, Georgia; Reford McQueen, Shady Valley, Tennessee; two sisters, Lois Walker, Shady Valley, Tennessee; Okie Greer, Johnson City, Tennessee; two grandsons, Aaron Honaker and Joshua Honaker, both of the home; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 8 p.m. from the Shady Valley Church of Christ with James A. Sherman and Dr. Tom Peek officiating. Graveside services were conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. from the McQueen Cemetery, Shady Valley. Pallbearers were Tony Barry, David Walker, Randy McQueen, Richard Blevins, Randy Hutchinson, Doug Roark, Jack Blevins, Olan Bentley and Doug Walker. Percy-Hux Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

He was born in Shady Valley, Tennessee, and was retired from the US Air Force with over 22 years of active duty service. He then went to work for Chatham County, retiring in 1978. He was a member of White Bluff United Methodist Church. Survivors: wife, Beverly Young McQueen, Savannah; son and daughter in law, Raleigh Howard McQueen, Jr., & Jean DeMatteo-McQueen of Baltimore, MD; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara M. Lariscy & Michael Lariscy of Savannah; two grandchildren, Erin Lariscy & Steven Lariscy of Savannah; a brother and sister-in-law, Reford & Cleota McQueen of Shady Valley, TN; two sisters and brother-in-law, Lois Walker of Shady Valley, TN; and Okle & Joe Greer of Johnson City, TN; and a number of nieces and nephews.     SHADY VALLEY - Reford Elmo McQueen, age 96, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, January 06, 2019 at the Mountain City Care Center.

    He was born on August 16, 1922 in Shady Valley to the late Willis and Hattie Blevins McQueen. In addition to his parents, Reford was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Cleota McQueen in 2015; sisters; Walsa Eller, Cleo Callahan and Okle Greer; and brother, Raleigh McQueen.

    Reford was a United States Army Veteran having honorably served during World War II. He was a Sargent in the 701st Tank Battalion, serving under General Bradley. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

    Like most men of his generation, Reford grew up farming. He loved to farm and be outdoors. At age 16, Reford served in CCC camps in Washington. He was also a former employee of TDOT. Before losing his vision, Reford loved to read and cut wood. He was a true family man who worked hard to provide for his family, who he loved spending time with.

    He was a member of Crandull Church of Christ.

    Those left to cherish his memories include his son, Randy McQueen and wife Marty; sister, Lois McQueen Walker; grandson, Ryan McQueen and wife Joanna; great grandchildren, Eliza Mae McQueen and Eleanor Claire McQueen; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

    The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at the Crandull Church of Christ. Funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Tracy Dugger officiating. Singing will be directed by Mr. Elwood Cretsinger. Graveside service and interment with military honors conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at the McQueen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Clay Walker, Randy McQueen, Jack Blevins, Ryan McQueen, Jimmie Walker and Dennis Honaker. Honorary pallbearers are Jim Eller and Virgil Cretsinger.
